Randle and Porter Clicked Immediately — Brooklyn’s New Offense Finally Has Shape

GOATIFY

Brooklyn did not need a preseason opener to prove anything definitive, but it did need signs that a rebuilt offense could look different. A 124-90 win in Charlotte delivered several at once. Michael Porter Jr. scored 16 points, Julius Randle added 13 in his first game for the Nets, and Brooklyn turned a competitive first half into a rout by combining hot shooting with cleaner ball movement and aggressive transition play.

The score matters less than the shape of the performance. Brooklyn finished last season at the bottom of the league in offensive efficiency and three-point percentage. Against Charlotte, it shot 55 percent from the field, made 20 of 37 threes and produced 31 assists. Those numbers will not survive intact once regular-season defenses tighten, but they showed why the Randle-Porter pairing can give Jordi Fernández more ways to create advantages than he had a year ago.

Randle and Porter already solve different problems

The most encouraging part of the opener was not that Porter made four threes or that Randle scored efficiently. It was how naturally their games connected. Porter scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter, giving Brooklyn immediate spacing and a target for drive-and-kick possessions. Randle then took over a short stretch in the second quarter, scoring seven straight Nets points and creating for teammates rather than turning every touch into an isolation.

That balance is important. Randle has spent much of his career as a high-usage creator who can bully smaller defenders and draw help from the elbows. Porter is at his best when he can punish that help without needing to dominate the ball. One of the cleanest examples came when Randle found Porter behind the back for a three. It was only one preseason possession, but it illustrated the basic geometry Brooklyn wants: force the defense to react to Randle, then make the rotation expensive with Porter’s shooting.

The Nets do not need either veteran to become a different player. They need the two skill sets to stop possessions from becoming predictable. If Randle can keep the ball moving and Porter can stay dangerous without requiring scripted touches, Brooklyn has a credible offensive foundation while its younger guards develop.

The second half showed a more repeatable formula

Charlotte stayed within four points at halftime, so the final margin was not simply the product of an early shooting avalanche. Brooklyn broke the game open after the break, outscoring the Hornets 68-38 over the final two quarters. The Nets also reduced their own mistakes after a loose first half and turned Charlotte’s errors into easy offense.

That is where the 25 forced turnovers and 25-6 fast-break advantage become more useful than the raw three-point percentage. Shooting 54 percent from deep is not a sustainable plan. Creating extra possessions can be. Brooklyn has enough length and athleticism across the rotation to pressure passing lanes, and a team that may still struggle to manufacture elite half-court shots can compensate by running before defenses are organized.

Fernández praised the group for sustaining its effort while using every healthy player. That matters in preseason because the rotation is still fluid. Day’Ron Sharpe supplied eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while the team’s collective activity prevented Charlotte from settling into a comfortable second-half offense.

The caution is obvious: Charlotte was short-handed too, and exhibition games are built for experimentation. Brooklyn should not confuse one night of chaos creation with a finished defensive identity. But the formula is repeatable even when the shots cool off — defend with activity, rebound, move the ball and run.

The young rotation is the real test

The blowout also created room for the younger Nets to make a case for real minutes. Drake Powell scored nine points and finished a game-high plus-20 after an uneven rookie season and difficult summer-league stretch. Nolan Traore added 10 points, while Egor Dëmin started at point guard and helped organize the first unit.

That mix is the larger reason the veteran pairing matters. Brooklyn is not building around Randle and Porter as if the roster were finished. It is using established scorers to give developing players a functional environment. Young guards learn more when the floor is spaced, the defense has to respect multiple creators and every possession is not asking them to invent offense from scratch.

Powell is a particularly useful test case. His path to minutes does not require becoming a primary scorer. If he defends, runs, cuts and makes open shots, the attention drawn by Randle and Porter can simplify his decisions. The same logic applies to several players competing for the back end of the rotation.

Preseason optimism is cheap, and Brooklyn will see much more resistance once the games count. Still, a 34-point win offered a coherent first picture of what this version of the Nets wants to be: veteran creation in the frontcourt, shooting around it, aggressive transition basketball and enough young depth to keep the pace high.

One exhibition cannot erase the problems that produced last season’s offense, and Brooklyn will not shoot 20-for-37 from three every night. The useful takeaway is that the Nets did not need one player to carry them. Porter supplied spacing and quick scoring, Randle created pressure with the ball, and the younger rotation converted the advantages around them.

That is a much healthier starting point than chasing the final score. If the veteran fit remains this clean when defenses scout it and the young players keep winning useful minutes, Brooklyn may have found an offensive structure before it has finished building the roster.
