Lowry Won by 11 — Rahm and Langer’s Irish Open Records Are Gone
GOATIFYShane Lowry did not merely protect a lead at Doonbeg. He turned the final round of the Irish Open into a demolition.
Beginning Sunday four shots clear, the 2019 Open champion closed with a seven-under 63 and finished at 23-under 257. By the time the final putt dropped, the gap behind him had stretched to 11 shots, Patrick Reed and Joaquin Niemann were tied for second, and two long-standing Irish Open records had been pushed aside.
For a player whose 2026 season had repeatedly threatened to become a story of near-misses, this was the opposite: control from the first stretch of holes to the last.
The round was over before the back nine knew it
Lowry started with the kind of advantage that can tempt a leader into defensive golf. He did the opposite. Four birdies arrived in his first eight holes, including a 45-foot conversion at the seventh that made the chase feel increasingly unrealistic before the field had reached the turn.
Reed did make a run. Starting the day 10 shots behind, he birdied six of his first 10 holes and eventually signed for a 64. Niemann added a 67. On most Sundays, those are rounds that put pressure on a leader. Here, they barely changed the shape of the leaderboard because Lowry kept adding to his cushion.
The finish gave the victory its perfect final image. Lowry rolled in a 30-foot birdie on the 18th, moving to 23 under and turning a comfortable home win into one of the most emphatic results the event has seen.
Two records fell, and 17 years folded into one win
The number 257 matters because it moved Lowry seven strokes beyond the previous 72-hole Irish Open scoring record of 264, set by Jon Rahm at Lahinch in 2019. The 11-shot winning margin mattered for a different reason: it surpassed the event record of 10 set by Bernhard Langer at Portmarnock in 1987.
That makes this more than another trophy in Lowry’s career. His first Irish Open win came 17 years earlier, when he stunned the event as an amateur. He returned this time as a major champion, Ryder Cup hero and one of the most recognizable Irish golfers of his generation, then produced an even more overwhelming result.
The field behind him was hardly anonymous. Reed, a former Masters champion, shared second with Niemann and strengthened his position at the top of the Race to Dubai. Rory McIlroy closed with a 67 and finished tied for 41st. Lowry still separated himself from everyone by a margin that made the names behind him feel almost incidental.
The bigger story is what Lowry just rescued from 2026
The timing is important. Lowry had already had chances to make 2026 feel very different. Earlier in the year, a late collapse at the Cognizant Classic turned a possible win into frustration, and he had not recorded another top-10 finish before arriving at Doonbeg.
That context makes Sunday’s final round especially sharp. There was no wobble to survive and no closing stretch to explain away. Lowry took a four-shot lead, attacked, widened it, and left with the biggest Irish Open victory margin on record.
It was also the second-largest winning margin on the European Tour this season, behind only Yurav Premlall’s 14-shot victory at the Catalunya Championship. For Lowry, though, the setting gave this one a different weight: a national championship, a home crowd and a tournament already tied to the beginning of his professional story.
The result does not erase every uneven week that came before it. It does something more useful. It gives Lowry a defining 2026 performance that stands on its own: a record score, a record margin and a second Irish Open title separated from the first by nearly two decades.
