Yamal is turning the vote into a trophies-versus-numbers argument
Yamal’s public position is unusually direct. He believes he and Mbappé are the two best players in the world, and he thinks his collection of major wins should put him first this year. The timing makes sense. Barcelona retained the Spanish title, Spain became world champions, and Yamal was named La Liga’s best player for the 2025-26 season.
His argument is not that he outscored Mbappé. He did not. It is that the Ballon d’Or should reward a player who combined elite individual influence with the defining trophies of the season. In that framing, Yamal has the strongest blend of both.
There is also an interesting layer of self-criticism behind the confidence. Even after winning the World Cup, Yamal has said he was not completely satisfied with his own tournament. He felt some of his value came from attracting multiple defenders, creating space and changing the shape of matches in ways that do not always become goals or assists. That is an important part of his candidacy: he is effectively asking voters to judge how much fear and tactical attention he creates, not only the final statistical line.
For a player who is still only 19, the scale of the résumé is already unusual. Yamal is not talking like somebody hoping to sneak into the top three. He is talking like a player who expects to be judged against the very best seasons produced by established superstars.
Mbappé owns the numbers, while Kane keeps making a two-man race look crowded
If the award were decided purely by scoring dominance, Mbappé would be extraordinarily difficult to beat. He led the scoring charts in three of the sport’s biggest competitions: La Liga, the Champions League and the World Cup. That is a rare combination of domestic, continental and international production.
The problem is the empty major-trophy column. Real Madrid’s season did not end with the kind of collective prize that normally strengthens a Ballon d’Or campaign, and France also fell short of the World Cup title. That leaves voters deciding whether Mbappé’s unmatched scoring should outweigh Yamal’s championship résumé.
Then there is Kane, the name that makes Yamal’s declaration of a two-player race especially provocative. The England captain scored 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England across 65 matches, won domestic silverware with Bayern and helped England reach the World Cup semi-finals before the national team finished third. He has both the enormous numbers and trophies that make the ballot more complicated than a simple Barcelona-versus-Real Madrid argument.
Kane’s case is different from Yamal’s and Mbappé’s. He does not have the World Cup trophy that elevates Yamal, and he did not top all three marquee scoring competitions like Mbappé. But 73 goals is so extreme that voters cannot treat him as background noise. His season asks a different question: at what point does sustained scoring volume become a trophy-level achievement of its own?
That is why the final weeks before the ceremony could be more interesting than Yamal’s two-man framing suggests. Yamal has the signature team successes. Mbappé has the broadest elite scoring dominance. Kane has a staggering volume season paired with meaningful silverware. All three can tell a coherent story about why their season should define 2026.
Yamal has at least made his position unmistakable. He is not campaigning as the future of the award anymore. He is arguing that the future has already arrived.
