More Training Volume Isn’t Automatically More Muscle: What a 2026 Study Found

A new 2026 resistance-training study gives a useful reality check to one of bodybuilding’s oldest assumptions: if some training volume builds muscle, then a lot more volume must build even more. In 25 resistance-trained adults, researchers compared a modest increase in habitual lower-body volume with a much more aggressive increase. Both approaches increased quadriceps size over eight weeks, but the much larger workload did not produce superior hypertrophy.

That does not mean volume is unimportant. It means the relationship between sets and growth is not a simple “more is always better” equation. The study is most useful as a lesson in dose, efficiency and recovery: extra sets can be tolerable without being productive enough to justify their cost.

What the 2026 study actually tested

The design was stronger than a simple comparison between two groups of strangers. Each participant trained both legs twice per week, with one leg assigned to a roughly 20% increase from that person’s habitual weekly training volume and the other assigned to a roughly 120% increase. Using each lifter as their own comparison helps reduce noise from differences in genetics, diet, training history and baseline responsiveness.

The participants were already resistance trained, which matters. Beginners often grow from almost any sensible progressive program, while experienced lifters usually have smaller margins for easy improvement. The researchers followed the intervention for eight weeks and assessed changes in the vastus lateralis, a major quadriceps muscle, alongside cellular and molecular markers related to muscle remodeling.

So this was not “three sets versus thirty sets” in untrained people. It was a test of what happens when experienced lifters suddenly push one limb far above their normal workload while the other receives a much more conservative progression.

The headline result: much more work did not mean more muscle

Both conditions increased vastus lateralis muscle cross-sectional area. The key finding was the lack of a meaningful advantage for the massive volume increase. In other words, the leg doing dramatically more work grew, but it did not clearly outgrow the leg receiving the modest increase.

That is important because the high-volume condition was not simply a disaster. The researchers did not find evidence that the abrupt 120% increase suppressed hypertrophy compared with the smaller increase. The participants were capable of tolerating a surprising amount of added work over the study period. But “tolerated” and “optimal” are different standards.

If two approaches produce similar muscle growth, the one that requires substantially less time, fatigue and joint exposure has an obvious efficiency advantage unless the extra work serves another purpose. More sets might still improve skill, work capacity or enjoyment for some lifters, but those benefits should not be confused with automatically greater hypertrophy.

Why this does not kill the volume dose-response idea

Training volume still matters, especially when the alternative is doing too little high-quality work to provide a strong stimulus. A large body of hypertrophy research supports the idea that, up to a point, adding hard sets can improve growth. The difficult part is locating that point for a real person rather than treating a population average as a universal prescription.

The new study is better read as evidence against a limitless dose-response. Once a lifter is already performing enough productive weekly work, adding a huge block of additional sets may create diminishing returns. Those extra sets still count on paper, but their marginal value can shrink as fatigue rises and set quality falls.

This also helps explain why two programs with very different weekly set totals can both work. The lifter doing fewer sets may be closer to failure, use exercises that load the target muscle better, recover more completely and progress more consistently. Counting sets is useful, but it is not a complete measure of stimulus.

Recoverable volume is not the same as productive volume

One of the easiest programming mistakes is to use soreness tolerance as proof that a workload is effective. A lifter can survive a high-volume week without actually gaining more from it. Recovery is a constraint, not the goal. The question is not “Can I get through 25 sets?” but “Are sets 18 through 25 adding enough useful stimulus to justify their fatigue?”

That distinction becomes especially important when a bodybuilding program includes many muscle groups. The study manipulated lower-body work in a controlled setting. In real life, a lifter may be training quads, hamstrings, chest, back, shoulders and arms while also working, sleeping imperfectly and managing other stress. A huge increase everywhere at once creates a very different recovery problem.

Watch performance rather than chasing a set-count badge. If additional volume coincides with stable or improving loads, repetitions and technique—and soreness and motivation remain manageable—it may be useful. If performance stagnates while sessions get longer and joints feel worse, the extra work is probably not earning its place.

What the study cannot tell us

Eight weeks is long enough to detect meaningful training changes, but it is not a lifetime of bodybuilding. The study focused on trained adults and a specific lower-body protocol, so it cannot prove that every muscle group responds identically or that doubling whole-body training volume for months is harmless.

It also does not identify one perfect number of sets per muscle per week. Individual response varies. Some lifters appear to thrive on relatively low volumes, while others benefit from more. Exercise selection, effort, repetition range, proximity to failure, technique and frequency all change how stressful a “set” actually is.

Finally, similar average growth between conditions does not mean every participant responded identically. Group results are useful for setting expectations, but your own logbook still matters. A sensible program uses research to narrow the search space and then uses repeated performance and recovery data to personalize the dose.

A better way to add training volume

The practical alternative to “more is better” is not “do the minimum forever.” Start with a workload that lets you train hard and progress. When a muscle stalls for several weeks despite good exercise selection, nutrition and sleep, add a small amount of targeted work—often one or two weekly sets—rather than doubling the entire program.

Then give the change time. Track loads, repetitions, technique, session length, soreness and enthusiasm to train. If performance improves and the extra work remains recoverable, keep it. If nothing improves, remove it or move those sets to a better exercise. Progression should be a feedback loop, not a one-way march toward longer sessions.

The 2026 study does not make high-volume bodybuilding obsolete. It gives lifters a better question to ask: not “How much work can I survive?” but “What is the smallest additional dose that actually improves the result?” That mindset keeps volume useful instead of turning it into a contest.
