Richarlison celebrating for Tottenham Hotspur before his proposed Trabzonspor transfer

Richarlison to Trabzonspor? Why Tottenham Has Already Moved On

GOATIFY

Richarlison's Tottenham future has reached the point where the transfer question is no longer really about whether the club wants to keep him. The 29-year-old Brazil forward has agreed personal terms with Trabzonspor, has asked to leave Spurs more than once this summer, and was omitted from Tottenham's submitted 2026/27 Premier League squad. The remaining obstacle is the transfer fee.

That makes the final hours of Turkey's transfer window unusually important for both sides. Trabzonspor have already tested Tottenham with bids reportedly worth £15 million and £20 million, while Spurs have made it clear they want an economic solution rather than simply keeping an unhappy third-choice forward around until January. Richarlison wants the move, Trabzonspor want the player, and Tottenham have already built an attack that looks designed for life without him.

The situation is also a useful example of how quickly a player's status can change after a big transfer window. Richarlison entered the summer as an experienced Premier League striker with years left at the top level. Tottenham then rebuilt aggressively, adding Omar Marmoush, Sávio and other attacking options. Suddenly a player who once looked like a central part of the squad is fighting for a place that may not exist.

Richarlison Is Already Outside Tottenham's Premier League Plans

Richarlison's Tottenham role has shrunk dramatically after the club's attacking rebuild.

The strongest signal is not a rumor or a negotiating tactic. Richarlison is not in Tottenham's 25-man Premier League squad. Spurs submitted their senior list after the English window closed, and his name was missing while newer attacking additions were included.

That does not make a transfer inevitable, because registration rules and January changes can still create future routes back into the squad. But it makes the immediate football reality difficult to ignore. If Richarlison stays in north London past the Turkish deadline, he would be spending the first half of the season without a normal Premier League role unless circumstances change dramatically.

For a 29-year-old international forward, that is a poor outcome. Richarlison needs regular football more than he needs another few months attached to a Premier League contract. He has already pushed for an exit, and Tottenham's own squad choices show that the club is prepared to move forward without him.

The timing is especially striking because Richarlison was still assigned Tottenham's No. 9 shirt before the season. The club's earlier squad-number list included him, but the final submitted Premier League group does not. In the weeks between those two decisions, Tottenham accelerated the rebuild and the hierarchy shifted.

There is no need to pretend Richarlison suddenly became a bad player. His Spurs spell has been inconsistent, but his movement, work rate, aerial ability and capacity to play through the middle or from the left still have value. The issue is that value is now more useful to Tottenham as a transfer fee than as depth for a player who does not appear to be part of the immediate league plan.

Why Trabzonspor Makes Sense for Richarlison

Trabzonspor already have Mohamed Salah as the headline name in an ambitious attacking project.

Trabzonspor are not offering Richarlison a quiet landing spot. They have already added Mohamed Salah and are trying to build an attack capable of changing the balance at the top of Turkish football. Adding another proven Premier League forward would turn that ambition into something much more concrete.

For Richarlison, the attraction is obvious. He would go from being outside Tottenham's league squad to competing for a major role at a club that actively wants him. Personal terms are understood to be agreed, with the proposed salary representing a significant increase on what he currently earns in north London.

The presence of Salah also changes the football fit. Richarlison would not have to arrive as the single creative focus of the attack. He could operate as the central runner, attack crosses, occupy center-backs and press from the front while Salah attracts defensive attention from wider or deeper positions.

That pairing could be uncomfortable for opponents. Salah remains a player defenders cannot ignore, while Richarlison is at his best when he can attack space rather than spend long stretches trying to create his own shot from a standstill. A more direct attacking environment could suit him better than competing for touches in a crowded Spurs frontline.

Trabzonspor also offer something Tottenham cannot right now: certainty. A forward approaching 30 does not need a vague promise that opportunities might appear later. He needs a team that has deliberately chosen him, a coach prepared to use him and a competition in which his role is clear.

The Turkish window staying open after England's deadline is what makes the deal possible at all. Tottenham can no longer buy a direct replacement if they sell him, but they have already done the replacement work. Trabzonspor, meanwhile, still have the ability to complete the registration and give Richarlison an immediate route out.

Tottenham's Summer Signings Have Made Richarlison Expendable

Omar Marmoush arrived from Manchester City and immediately increased the competition for Tottenham's attacking places.

The biggest reason Tottenham can take a hard line on Richarlison's future is that the club no longer needs to protect itself against losing him. Omar Marmoush arrived from Manchester City on a season-long loan with an obligation to make the move permanent next summer, giving Roberto De Zerbi another experienced option through the middle and across the front line.

Marmoush brings qualities that overlap with some of Richarlison's best traits but also fit the new system in different ways. He has pace, can threaten in behind, can play centrally or as a more attacking No. 10, and gives Tottenham another forward comfortable carrying the ball at speed.

That alone would have squeezed Richarlison's minutes. Then Tottenham also added Sávio from Manchester City, further increasing the number of attackers competing for starts and substitute appearances. Sávio is younger, more naturally suited to the wing and was signed specifically because of his one-on-one ability and creativity in wide areas.

Sávio is another major attacking addition who has pushed Tottenham toward a younger, different-looking front line.

Those moves matter because squad depth is not only about counting bodies. It is about counting roles. Tottenham have Dominic Solanke as a conventional central striker, Marmoush as a versatile forward capable of playing centrally, Sávio as a dynamic winger, plus established attackers such as Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski and Mathys Tel.

Once those roles are mapped out, Richarlison becomes difficult to justify as an expensive third-choice option. He could still help in individual matches, but the club would be carrying a senior salary for a player who wants to leave and who has already been omitted from the league squad.

That is exactly the type of situation where a transfer should happen if the price is reasonable. Keeping a player simply because the buying club has not yet reached the preferred valuation can feel principled in September and wasteful by January if he barely plays.

The Transfer Fee Is Now the Only Serious Obstacle

Richarlison playing for Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have rejected two offers for Richarlison, but the player and club appear aligned on an exit.

Trabzonspor's first two attempts reportedly came in at £15 million and £20 million. Tottenham rejected both, which means the disagreement is no longer about the basic idea of selling. It is about where the club draws the line on value.

Spurs have a legitimate reason not to give Richarlison away. Even with his reduced role, he remains a Brazil international with extensive Premier League experience. A desperate deadline should not automatically force Tottenham to accept whatever is offered.

But leverage works in both directions. Trabzonspor know the player wants to join them. They know Tottenham have left him out of the Premier League squad. They know the English club has already signed replacements and would prefer to remove an unhappy senior salary from the books. Every one of those facts makes it harder for Spurs to hold out for a huge premium.

The most logical outcome is therefore a compromise above the rejected £20 million bid but below the kind of fee Tottenham might have demanded earlier in the summer. A sell-on clause or achievable add-ons could bridge the gap without forcing either club to abandon its position.

Tottenham should also consider the cost of not selling. If the Turkish deadline passes and Richarlison stays, his market value is unlikely to rise while he is outside the league squad. January buyers would know exactly why Spurs want a deal, and another four months of wages would have been paid with little sporting return.

That does not mean Tottenham should accept any number. It means the decision should be based on total value rather than pride. A slightly lower guaranteed fee today can still be better business than a theoretically higher valuation that no club is willing to pay in January.

What Happens If Richarlison Stays?

The fallback scenario is uncomfortable but not catastrophic. Richarlison remains under contract, can train with the squad and could potentially feature in competitions where registration rules differ. Tottenham could revisit the situation in January and attempt to find another buyer.

But that outcome benefits nobody as much as a completed Trabzonspor move would. Richarlison loses months of meaningful league football. Tottenham retain a salary and an unhappy player they have already planned without. Trabzonspor miss a forward they have spent days trying to sign.

The situation is particularly awkward because all sides seem aligned on the destination. Richarlison has agreed terms. Tottenham are willing to sell at the right number. Trabzonspor have already made multiple bids. There is no strategic dispute left to resolve; only the money has to be negotiated.

That is why this feels more likely to end with a transfer than with a dramatic reunion in north London. Spurs have already made the football decision. The squad list says it, the summer recruitment says it and Richarlison's own desire to leave says it.

If Trabzonspor can find the extra money before the Turkish window shuts, Richarlison gets the fresh start he wants, Tottenham complete another piece of their squad reset and the Turkish club adds another internationally recognizable attacker alongside Salah.

For Tottenham, the bigger story is what the sale would confirm. This is no longer the same attack built around the players who carried the club through previous seasons. De Zerbi and the recruitment team have chosen a younger, more flexible group and are willing to make difficult exits to create space for it.

Richarlison's four-year Spurs spell may therefore end not because of one disastrous season or one dramatic falling-out, but because the club changed faster than his role could survive. In modern football, that can be enough.
