2026 US Open men's semifinal bracket

Shelton vs. Tiafoe Gives America Its Shot — Zverev-Khachanov Could Ruin the US Open Party

The 2026 US Open men’s semifinals have produced the kind of Friday New York has been waiting for: one guaranteed American finalist, one top-ranked favorite trying to keep control of the draw, and one unseeded challenger who has already outperformed almost every expectation.

Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe meet in only the third all-American men’s US Open semifinal of this century. The winner will become just the second American man in the past 15 years to reach a major final and will move one victory away from ending the country’s long wait for a men’s Grand Slam champion.

Across the bracket, Alexander Zverev faces Karen Khachanov. Zverev is chasing a third consecutive major final after surviving two five-set matches at the start of the tournament. Khachanov arrived in New York without a hard-court win during the preceding swing and has somehow turned that form into the deepest run of his season.

The semifinal pairings could hardly be more different. One is a high-energy American collision loaded with crowd emotion. The other is a test of whether Zverev’s accumulated major experience can shut down an opponent playing with almost nothing to lose.

Zverev has recovered from survival mode — Khachanov now gets the biggest free swing in the draw

Zverev’s tournament looked fragile in the opening rounds. Two straight five-set matches forced him to spend far more time and energy on court than a top seed would ever choose. Since then, however, his level has stabilized. The serve has become more precise, his forehand has held up under pressure and he has found the angles that let him control points rather than merely extend them.

That matters because Khachanov is the kind of opponent who can make a favorite uncomfortable if he is allowed to strike first. His year has been uneven and his preparation for New York offered almost no evidence that a semifinal was coming. But his career has repeatedly shown that Grand Slam tennis can bring out a different version of him.

Khachanov does not need to solve Zverev over an entire season. He needs one match in which the forehand lands deep, the first serve gives him enough cheap points and the scoreboard stays close long enough for doubt to enter the favorite’s side of the court.

Zverev’s advantage is that this stage is becoming familiar. He is attempting to reach a third straight major final, and that experience should help him manage the inevitable stretches when Khachanov catches fire. The German does not have to dominate every set; he has to keep his floor high enough that Khachanov is forced to sustain his best level for hours.

The tactical danger for Zverev is passivity. When he retreats too far behind the baseline, he gives a big hitter time to load up and turns his own defense into a burden. When he serves aggressively and trusts the improved forehand, the geometry of the match changes quickly. Khachanov’s chance is to stop that comfortable pattern before it settles.

Shelton-Tiafoe turns Arthur Ashe Stadium into an American pressure cooker

Ben Shelton at the 2026 US Open

The other semifinal will feel less like a normal tour match and more like an event. Shelton arrived here by beating reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set match that finished at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in US Open history. Tiafoe reached the same stage after climbing out of a two-set deficit against Alex Michelsen.

Both players therefore enter with proof that their tournament can survive chaos. Shelton has played with enormous confidence, combining a serve that can climb past 150 mph with much more complete point construction than the raw power label suggests. His defense has improved, he is transitioning forward better and he is willing to attack without needing every point to end in two shots.

Tiafoe’s experience at this tournament cannot be dismissed. This is his third US Open semifinal, and the New York atmosphere tends to lift his level. He can take the ball early, create forehand angles and use the crowd as momentum when games become emotional. The challenge will be preventing Shelton from racing through service games and immediately applying scoreboard pressure.

A fast start is especially important for Tiafoe because Shelton has shown very little tendency to back away once he has control. If the younger American starts landing first serves and dictating with the forehand, Tiafoe could spend too much of the match reacting. He needs to make Shelton hit uncomfortable second and third shots rather than simply admiring the first one.

Shelton, meanwhile, has to manage the emotional aftermath of the Alcaraz win. Beating the defending champion in a five-set classic can feel like a final, but the reward is another match with even more national attention. The danger is spending the opening set celebrating what happened rather than solving the player across the net.

The stakes are larger than either man. American men’s tennis has waited since Andy Roddick’s 2003 US Open title for another Grand Slam champion. Friday guarantees an American finalist, but it does not guarantee the drought ends. Zverev or Khachanov will be waiting on the other side.

The semifinal bracket has a clean narrative but no clean ending. Shelton has the biggest momentum swing after removing Alcaraz. Tiafoe has the deepest personal relationship with this stage in New York. Zverev has the strongest recent major résumé. Khachanov has the freedom of a player who arrived with almost no external expectation and has already turned the tournament upside down.

By Friday night, the US Open will have an American man in the final. What it still does not know is whether New York is preparing for the end of a 23-year drought or simply setting up one more painful near miss.
