The AL East Awards Race Is Loaded — Alonso, Schlittler and Okamoto Lead Every Team’s Best Cases

Boston has outplayed expectations after a winter that did not generate overwhelming hype. Baltimore has leaned heavily on a new middle-of-the-order anchor. Tampa Bay keeps finding ways to turn young talent into winning production, and Toronto has had to squeeze value out of an offense that has too often stalled.
That makes the division’s internal awards picture more interesting than simply asking who has the biggest name. Every club has a player who has carried the offense, a pitcher who has separated himself, and a rookie whose season deserves to be measured against the rest of the league. Some choices are obvious. Others depend on whether you value workload, leverage, consistency or the difficulty of the role a player has been asked to fill.
With the regular season moving toward its final stretch, here is the strongest MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year case on each AL East roster — and why several of these names could matter well beyond their own clubhouse.
Baltimore: Pete Alonso has supplied the power the Orioles needed
Baltimore’s MVP case begins with Pete Alonso because the production has been impossible to miss. In his first season with the Orioles, the veteran first baseman has reached 34 home runs, owns an .861 OPS and has driven in 97 runs, the highest RBI total in the American League at this stage. The Orioles have had stretches in which their offense has looked ordinary, but Alonso has given them the kind of middle-order threat that changes the shape of an inning even when the lineup around him is not rolling.
His 4.0 rWAR does not place him among the league’s very top players by that measure, yet his impact looks stronger when the focus shifts toward high-leverage offense. He sits fifth in the AL in Win Probability Added, reflecting how often his biggest swings have arrived in situations that materially change Baltimore’s chances of winning. Twenty of his home runs have come with runners on base, tied with Kyle Schwarber for the most in the majors. That is exactly the sort of production a club expects when it builds around a power hitter.
On the mound, Shane Baz gets the nod in a much tighter race. Brandon Young and Trevor Rogers are slightly ahead of him in rWAR, but Baz has carried the largest workload at 169 innings. He has completed at least five innings in 25 of his 29 outings and has improved as the season has moved along. Since June 29, his ERA has fallen from 4.31 to 4.05 while he has surrendered only five home runs in 13 starts. It is not a dominant Cy Young résumé in the traditional sense, but within Baltimore’s staff his combination of volume and late-season steadiness separates him.
Samuel Basallo is the rookie choice. A 100 OPS+ puts him precisely at league average as a hitter, yet average offense becomes more valuable when it comes from a catcher who also provides power and competent work behind the plate. His 17 homers and above-average blocking and throwing give Baltimore a young catcher with two-way value. The concern is his post-injury form: his OPS was .756 before a month-long injured-list stint in August and has dropped to .476 since his return. Even with that downturn, his full-season body of work remains the strongest rookie case on the roster.
Boston: Willson Contreras changed more than the Red Sox stat sheet
The Red Sox have players with stronger raw WAR totals than Willson Contreras. Wilyer Abreu is at 5.6 rWAR and Ceddanne Rafaela at 5.4, compared with 4.4 for Contreras. But Boston’s MVP argument is not only about the largest number on one leaderboard. Contreras arrived without the kind of offseason attention that usually follows a franchise-defining acquisition and has become a central voice and a tone-setter for a team that has consistently exceeded preseason expectations.
He has also produced enough to make the leadership argument easy to defend. Contreras owns a .900 OPS with 26 home runs and leads the Red Sox in Win Probability Added. His RBI production has been especially strong in high-leverage moments, which helps explain why his value has felt larger than a single WAR total. Boston needed an offensive presence who could deliver in pressure spots while helping set standards inside the clubhouse. Contreras has done both.
Sonny Gray is the pitching choice. The 36-year-old came to Boston after two solid seasons in St. Louis and looked more like a reliable No. 2 than a potential staff leader. Instead, he has gone 17-4 with a 2.69 ERA and a 1.162 WHIP. His 150.2 innings do not give him elite volume, but he has completed at least six innings in 19 starts, a mark reached by only one other American League pitcher. That consistency has helped Boston avoid overexposing the bullpen and has given the rotation a dependable second pillar beside Garrett Crochet.
Payton Tolle stands out among Boston’s rookies. The left-hander has thrown 137 innings with a 3.15 ERA, and after every one of his 24 starts that ERA has remained at 3.39 or lower. His fastball mix is the foundation. Adding a sinker to his four-seam fastball and cutter has made the entire package harder to sit on, and his fastball run value ranks in the 93rd percentile. In a year with several excellent rookie pitchers and hitters around the league, Tolle may not be the overall favorite, but Boston could not ask for much more from a rookie starter.
New York: Ben Rice kept the Yankees afloat while Cam Schlittler became an ace
The Yankees’ MVP choice is the least conventional of the five, partly because their season has been shaped by Aaron Judge’s absence and uneven health. Ben Rice has 2.9 rWAR, the same total as Paul Blackburn, but the context around his offense matters. New York has spent roughly three months without Judge and even longer without Judge at full effectiveness. With the club sitting around the middle of the league in OPS, Rice has absorbed a large share of the run-producing responsibility.
Despite a recent slowdown, Rice still carries an .871 OPS and 36 home runs. His work in high-leverage situations has been even better: a .325/.435/.701 slash line when the game is at its most sensitive. That is the strongest argument for calling him the Yankees’ most valuable player in this specific season. He has not simply accumulated power numbers during a difficult year; he has delivered when New York most needed someone other than Judge to change games.
Cam Schlittler is the easiest pitching decision in the division. He leads the American League with 6.7 rWAR and a 2.01 ERA. Dylan Cease can match him in several underlying categories, but Schlittler has thrown 17.1 more innings, a meaningful separation when two pitchers are otherwise operating near the same level. The bigger surprise is how well his stuff has held up after he moved beyond his previous career high in innings. Rather than fading, he has allowed one earned run or fewer in eight of his last nine starts.
Spencer Jones takes the rookie spot. His first exposure in May was ugly — four hits in 24 at-bats with 12 strikeouts — and it appeared to confirm long-standing concerns about how much swing-and-miss would follow his enormous power into the majors. Since returning from the minors on June 5, though, Jones has posted an .818 OPS. The strikeouts have not disappeared, but he has controlled them enough for his raw power to become the defining part of his game. Only four qualified hitters have produced a better barrel rate over that span.
Tampa Bay: Junior Caminero is building a historic power profile at 22
Junior Caminero is one home run away from 40, which would give him consecutive 40-homer seasons while still in his age-22 campaign. That kind of power at such a young age puts him in extraordinary historical territory. The comparison is not simply about one hot season; reaching 40 twice this early would place him alongside Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews in a category that almost nobody has touched.
Caminero’s growth is not limited to slugging. His on-base percentage has climbed 56 points from 2025, and his defense has moved in the right direction despite 18 errors. Defensive Runs Saved has shifted from minus-five last season to plus-two this year. Tampa Bay does not need him to be a polished finished product at 22. It needs his elite power to continue arriving with enough plate discipline and defensive improvement to make him a complete centerpiece. That is exactly what 2026 has looked like.
The Rays’ pitching choice is Drew Rasmussen, though this is one of the tighter internal debates. Nick Martinez leads the club with 160 innings and pairs a 3.04 ERA with an MLB-best 1.4 walks per nine innings. Bryan Baker has converted 39 of 42 save chances with a 1.61 ERA and 0.911 WHIP. Rasmussen’s case rests on sustained run prevention. He is the only major-league pitcher to post an ERA below 3.00 in each of the last six seasons, and this year he leads the AL with a 0.907 WHIP and a 5.78 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Victor Mesa Jr. is the rookie selection, but this one comes with more qualification than the others. Tampa Bay does not have a rookie producing at Basallo, Tolle or Jones levels. Mesa’s value has come through defense and a strong second half. He has eight Defensive Runs Saved and seven Outs Above Average in right field, and opposing runners have learned quickly that his arm can change the risk calculation on the bases. At the plate, he has recovered from a .584 OPS through his first 28 games to post an .877 OPS over the next 36. That improvement has been enough to turn him into an everyday player for the American League’s best team.
Toronto: Kazuma Okamoto is doing two award jobs while Dylan Cease chases the Cy Young
Kazuma Okamoto has the unusual distinction of being Toronto’s best MVP candidate and its strongest rookie candidate at the same time. The Blue Jays have scored the third-fewest runs in baseball, so the standard for value has to account for how little protection the lineup has provided. Okamoto has hit 30 home runs, more than double the total of Toronto’s next-best slugger, and his 83 RBI are nearly 30 clear of anyone else on the team.
Those numbers may not resemble a classic league MVP season, but within Toronto’s context they are indispensable. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has endured another disappointing year, and without Okamoto the Blue Jays’ offense would have had even fewer ways to generate damage. That is why the same player can logically be the team’s best MVP candidate and an obvious Rookie of the Year choice. Spencer Miles deserves recognition after posting a 2.77 ERA and 1.059 WHIP across 87.2 innings in 45 appearances, including six starts, but Okamoto’s offensive responsibility is on another level.
Dylan Cease provides Toronto’s most serious league-wide awards argument. He leads the American League with a 2.47 FIP and also tops the league in hits allowed per nine innings at 5.6, home runs allowed per nine at 0.6 and strikeouts per nine at 12.7. He has surpassed 220 strikeouts, becoming only the fourth right-hander in Blue Jays history to reach that level after Roger Clemens, A.J. Burnett and Kevin Gausman.
The obstacle for Cease is Schlittler’s workload. The Yankees right-hander has thrown 17.1 more innings, and when the underlying performance is this close, that extra volume carries weight. Cease has enough dominance to make the race real, but Schlittler’s combination of run prevention and innings gives him the edge right now.
The larger AL East picture is what makes these team-by-team choices so compelling. Alonso, Contreras, Rice, Caminero and Okamoto have all become essential for very different reasons. Schlittler and Cease are not merely the best pitchers on their teams; they are legitimate contenders at the top of the entire American League race. Tolle, Jones and Basallo give three clubs young players who already look capable of carrying significant responsibilities.
Nothing about September is guaranteed. A hot final stretch can change an awards ballot, and a cold spell can narrow a lead that looked comfortable. But these are the names that best explain how each AL East club arrived here. In baseball’s most relentless division, value has taken different forms — raw power, high-leverage hitting, rotation stability, rookie emergence and the ability to keep producing while the roster around you changes.
