Jayson Tatum Looks Explosive Again — Why Celtics Fans Should Care Before Camp

GOATIFY

Jayson Tatum already proved the hardest part of his Achilles comeback last season: he returned to NBA games, handled playoff-level minutes and again looked like the player Boston could build around. The question entering 2026-27 is different. Can a full offseason turn the version of Tatum who fought his way back into the version who was an annual All-NBA First Team candidate?

A short Duke scrimmage clip cannot answer that by itself, but it can still be useful evidence. Recent footage showed Tatum moving fluidly, attacking off the dribble and playing above the rim with current and former Duke players. For Celtics fans, the most encouraging part is not a made jumper or a highlight finish. It is how normal the movement looks after an injury that once made every change of direction a major checkpoint.

The footage looks ordinary — and that is the encouraging part

Offseason runs are not NBA games. The defense is looser, the possessions are less structured and nobody should treat a 59-second highlight package as proof that a player has returned to peak form. But Tatum does not need September footage to prove he can score. He needs it to show that his body is behaving normally after the long recovery process.

That is why the changes of pace matter. Tatum is planting, accelerating and getting into his shooting motion without the visible hesitation that can linger after a major lower-leg injury. He returned last season and averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists over 22 regular-season games. Over his final 10 games, his production and efficiency climbed again. The trajectory was already positive before the offseason began.

The new variable is uninterrupted preparation. Last year, almost every basketball decision was filtered through rehabilitation. This summer has offered a chance to train for basketball rather than train to return to basketball.

A full offseason could matter more than the comeback itself

Players returning from Achilles injuries often talk about more than simply getting cleared. Calf strength, symmetry, confidence and the ability to repeat explosive movements all take time. Tatum's 2025-26 return was impressive because he was productive while still working through those layers.

Boston now gets to evaluate him after months in which there was no race against the calendar. That creates room to rebuild conditioning, sharpen footwork and regain the small physical advantages that separate a very good wing from an MVP-level one. Tatum has always won with a combination of size, balance and skill rather than pure speed, which gives his game a strong foundation as his body continues to normalize.

Boston's ceiling still depends on Tatum being Tatum

The Celtics around Tatum have changed. That makes his role even more important. Boston can build a competitive defense and create offense through several players, but its championship ceiling rises dramatically when Tatum is collapsing defenses, rebounding like a power forward and creating efficient shots for teammates.

His post-injury stretch showed that the all-around game survived. Rebounding was especially encouraging because it requires repeated physical contact, quick second jumps and trust in the lower body. His playmaking also gave Boston ways to punish teams that loaded up against him.

Training camp will provide the real checkpoints

The next meaningful evidence will come when Boston begins camp and Tatum has to repeat high-intensity work day after day. How does he look after a heavy practice? Is the first step consistently sharp? Does he defend smaller players in space? Can he absorb contact and still finish?

Those questions matter more than any September highlight. But the offseason clip is still a positive sign because it shows a star who is not spending his summer protecting the repaired leg. He is playing, competing and preparing.

For Boston, that is exactly where the optimism should come from. Tatum does not need another comeback story. He needs a normal season. The more ordinary his movement looks now, the more plausible it becomes that the extraordinary version of his game can return with it.
