Taj Gibson Retired — Then Walked Straight Back Into Chicago

GOATIFY

Taj Gibson’s playing career is over, but his NBA life is not slowing down. The 41-year-old announced his retirement after 17 seasons and is moving directly onto the Chicago Bulls’ coaching staff under new head coach Tiago Splitter.

It is a fitting turn for a player whose identity was built less around star billing than reliability. Gibson leaves after 1,012 NBA games, 462 starts and career averages of 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 51.7% from the floor. Chicago drafted him 26th overall in 2009, and the organization where his career began is now where the next phase starts.

Chicago gets one of its old culture-setters back

Taj Gibson during his NBA playing career

Gibson spent his first seven-plus seasons with the Bulls and became part of a Chicago group remembered for defense, physicality and postseason consistency. He made the NBA All-Rookie team in his first season and was part of six Bulls playoff appearances, including the 2010-11 run to the Eastern Conference Finals.

His best scoring season came in 2013-14, when he averaged a career-high 13.0 points. But the numbers only explain part of why the coaching move makes sense. Gibson’s value for years came from knowing where to be, defending multiple frontcourt roles, playing through contact and giving coaches dependable minutes without needing the offense built around him.

Seventeen seasons turned Gibson into the veteran every roster understood

Taj Gibson during his NBA career

After Chicago, Gibson’s career took him through Oklahoma City, Minnesota, New York, Washington, Detroit, Charlotte and Memphis. His final stretch was unusual even by veteran standards: New Orleans acquired him from Memphis last week and waived him a day later. Instead of chasing another roster spot, Gibson closed the playing chapter and returned to the Bulls in a different role.

That longevity matters for a young locker room. Gibson has lived through contender expectations, rebuilds, bench roles, starting assignments and late-career roster uncertainty. He knows what changes when a player moves from the center of a rotation to its edge, and he knows how demanding teams try to establish habits across an 82-game season.

Splitter’s first Bulls staff now has a direct bridge to the franchise’s recent past

Splitter was hired in June, so this is not simply a ceremonial homecoming. Gibson joins a staff that also includes Wes Unseld Jr., Blake Ahearn, Jamelle McMillan, Rex Kalamian and Jonah Herscu. For a first-year head coach, adding someone who already carries credibility with both NBA players and the Chicago fan base is an obvious advantage.

Gibson said he can leave the floor with no regrets after giving basketball everything he had. The more interesting part is that he is not really leaving the game. He is changing vantage points. Chicago now gets to find out whether the toughness, preparation and steadiness that kept him employed for 17 seasons can translate into teaching those habits to the next group.
