Matt Damon as Odysseus in The Odyssey

Matt Damon's The Odyssey Workout: How He Got Lean and Strong for Odysseus

UPLIFT IRON CLUB

Matt Damon’s Odysseus is a useful antidote to the idea that every movie transformation has to mean getting as large as possible. For The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan reportedly wanted Damon “lean but strong,” and the actor has said he filmed at about 167 pounds after normally walking around between roughly 185 and 200.

The important part is the target. Odysseus is supposed to look capable after years of war, sailing and survival—not like a modern mass-monster bodybuilder. Damon’s preparation therefore offers a more realistic fitness lesson for most lifters: preserve muscle, get leaner, stay athletic and make training repeatable enough that it can survive a demanding schedule.

The Real Goal Was Lean, Strong and Durable

Damon described the preparation like an athletic season. Training and diet stopped being optional items squeezed into spare time and became part of the daily structure. That matters more than any supposedly secret exercise. A clear visual and performance target makes it easier to decide what belongs in the program and what is just noise.

Reporting around the film indicates that Damon worked with trainer Dr. Gabe Stump four to five days per week, using a relatively simple setup built around dumbbells, a cable machine and a barbell. The goal was to lose fat while retaining muscle rather than chase maximal size. An upper/lower strength split was reportedly combined with a conditioning day that included incline walking with a weighted vest.

That structure makes sense for a 55-year-old actor preparing for a long physical shoot. Four or five focused sessions provide enough frequency to maintain strength and muscle without turning every day into a recovery problem. Basic presses, rows, squats, hinges and loaded carries cover most of the useful movement patterns. Conditioning then supports work capacity without needing to turn every lifting session into a circuit.

What Lifters Can Actually Copy From the Odyssey Prep

Matt Damon filming The Odyssey in a demanding outdoor scene

The first lesson is to choose a body-composition target that matches the job. Damon did not need to add twenty pounds of muscle. He needed to look leaner while remaining visibly strong and capable. For a recreational lifter, that usually means keeping hard resistance training in place during a calorie deficit instead of replacing lifting with endless cardio.

The second lesson is that simple equipment is enough. A barbell, dumbbells and cable stack can train every major muscle group. An upper/lower split also makes it easy to manage fatigue: press and pull on upper days, squat and hinge on lower days, then use a separate conditioning session for incline walking, carries or intervals.

The third lesson is consistency. Damon has said that role preparation becomes highly routinized and that he builds his day around it. That is a better model than hunting for novelty. A practical version might be two upper-body days, two lower-body days and one lower-impact conditioning day, with loads progressed gradually while calories and protein are controlled.

Nutrition deserves context too. Damon has discussed eliminating gluten under medical guidance, but gluten removal itself is not a universal fat-loss strategy. The transferable principle is that his diet became structured and strict enough to support the goal. For most people without a medical reason to avoid gluten, the important variables remain total calorie intake, adequate protein, food quality and adherence.

The result is a physique target that is arguably more useful than superhero bulk: strong shoulders and back, solid legs, low enough body fat to show definition, and enough conditioning to move well. Odysseus should look like someone who can row, climb, carry, fight and keep going. Training for that image means balancing muscle with capacity rather than maximizing either one in isolation.
