Rodgers Isn’t Sure Green Bay Wants Him Back — the Packers Split Still Has Teeth

It is what happens when the relationship with Green Bay becomes history instead of an old argument that is still close enough to sting.
Rodgers made it clear this week that he does not assume a ceremonial return to Lambeau Field will be simple. He believes plenty of Packers fans still appreciate what he accomplished, but he also suggested there are people inside the organization who may not be enthusiastic about welcoming him back — and that the feeling could be mutual.
The split with Green Bay never really had a clean ending
The tension traces back most clearly to the 2020 draft, when Green Bay traded up for Jordan Love in the first round while Rodgers was still operating as the franchise quarterback. The decision did not immediately end the partnership. In fact, Rodgers responded with two more MVP seasons. But the succession plan changed the relationship between quarterback and organization.
By the 2021 offseason, the disagreement had become far more serious. Rodgers wanted major organizational change and, at one point, sought a trade. Green Bay held its ground, and the two sides stayed together for two more seasons before the Packers finally sent him to the New York Jets in April 2023.
That history matters because Rodgers is not just another former star. He spent 18 seasons with Green Bay, won four league MVP awards, delivered a Super Bowl championship and became one of the defining players in franchise history. A future jersey retirement would normally feel inevitable. The uncertainty is about how quickly everyone involved is ready to turn a difficult ending into a celebration.
Mark Murphy, who was Packers president during the final years of the Rodgers era, retired in 2025. General manager Brian Gutekunst, however, was central to the Love draft and remains part of the story Rodgers still references when discussing how his time in Green Bay ended.
Rodgers has one last Steelers season before the legacy question takes over
There is an obvious parallel in Packers history. Brett Favre also watched Green Bay draft his successor, also had a messy exit and also ended up with the Jets before his career was over. Time eventually softened that relationship. Favre returned to Lambeau Field in 2015 and had his No. 4 retired, more than four years after his final NFL game.
Rodgers may eventually follow a similar path. His place in Packers history is too large to ignore, and the fan relationship is broader than whatever friction remains with individual executives. But his latest comments make it clear that nobody should assume the reunion will happen immediately after his last snap.
First, there is still football to play. Rodgers is entering his 22nd NFL season and his second year with Pittsburgh. The Steelers open against Atlanta, giving him another shot at a postseason run before retirement turns every conversation toward Canton, Green Bay and the way his career should be commemorated.
That makes 2026 a strange bridge year. Rodgers is still a starting quarterback trying to win games, but every milestone now feels like part of a closing chapter. If Pittsburgh makes a real run, the focus stays on the present. If the season ends early, the questions about his Packers legacy will arrive immediately.
Green Bay does not need Rodgers to rewrite the final years for a reunion to happen. Rodgers does not need the organization to pretend the breakup was painless, either. The real question is whether enough time can separate the accomplishments from the resentment. Packers history suggests it can. Rodgers is simply warning that the clock may need to run for a while first.
