Paris Johnson Jr. with the Arizona Cardinals

Paris Johnson Is Done for 2026 — Now Arizona Has to Trust a Seventh-Round Rookie

Arizona's season changed on the final drive of a loss that already felt damaging. Paris Johnson Jr., the left tackle the Cardinals drafted sixth overall to anchor their offensive line, tore his left biceps against the Giants and is done for 2026. The injury removes a player who had started every one of his 47 NFL games and leaves a 1-3 team trying to stabilize its most fragile unit before Detroit arrives.

The immediate response tells us how Arizona plans to survive it. Rookie seventh-rounder Jayden Williams is expected to start at left tackle, while the Cardinals added former Browns first-round pick Jedrick Wills Jr. from Buffalo's practice squad. That is not a like-for-like replacement for Johnson. It is a depth plan built around giving a rookie his chance while putting an experienced emergency option behind him.

Johnson's injury is bigger than one missing starter because Arizona was already searching for continuity up front. He had started all four games this season and had become the blindside fixture the Cardinals expected when they took him sixth overall in 2023. The team also exercised his fifth-year option earlier this year, keeping him under contract through 2027. Now the rest of this season becomes another durability interruption rather than another step in that long-term evaluation.

The timing makes the problem sharper. Arizona has lost three straight since its opening-week win, and the offensive line enters Week 5 against a Detroit front that has been generating pressure at one of the league's highest rates. Right guard Isaiah Adams also left the Giants game with an ankle injury and is considered unlikely to play against the Lions. A line that needed cohesion may have to replace two starters at once.

Williams is the most interesting part of the response. The rookie was the 217th pick in April after starting 34 games at Ole Miss across both tackle spots. Arizona had already used him as an extra blocker in heavy personnel, giving him 19 offensive snaps before Johnson went down. Coaches have praised his camp and his readiness, but there is an obvious difference between being a sixth offensive lineman in selected packages and protecting Jacoby Brissett's blind side for an entire game.

That challenge is why the Detroit matchup matters beyond the standings. The Lions entered the week with 75 quarterback pressures and 15 sacks, with Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill and D.J. Wonnum all creating disruption. Williams does not get a soft landing. His first start is likely to force Arizona to make choices about protection help, route timing and how often it can leave a rookie tackle isolated.

The Cardinals can help him without shrinking the offense completely. Tight ends and backs can chip on obvious passing downs, play-action can slow edge rushers, and the run game can keep Detroit from treating every snap as a pass-rush opportunity. But those solutions carry tradeoffs. Extra protection means fewer eligible receivers in routes, while quick-game concepts can compress the field if a defense begins sitting on them. Replacing Johnson is therefore not only a personnel question; it changes how Arizona can call the game.

Wills gives the Cardinals a different kind of insurance. The former No. 10 overall pick started 57 games for Cleveland from 2020 through 2024 but has not appeared in a regular-season game since then after knee problems derailed his career. He spent time with Chicago this year before landing on Buffalo's practice squad. Arizona is not asking him to walk in and immediately become the player Cleveland once hoped it had drafted. The value is that a 27-year-old with extensive starting experience can learn the system while Williams gets the first opportunity.

That distinction matters. Signing Wills does not mean Arizona lacks confidence in Williams; naming Williams the starter suggests the opposite. It means the Cardinals understand the risk of entering the rest of the season with a rookie seventh-rounder as the only credible answer at a premium position. If Williams handles the job, Arizona may have discovered useful long-term depth at a bargain draft cost. If he struggles or gets hurt, Wills gives the coaching staff another path without forcing a desperate in-game reshuffle.

There is also a longer view around Johnson. He is only 25 and remains under team control for 2027, so this injury does not have to become a referendum on his future. But it does add another interrupted season after he missed time late in both 2024 and 2025. The Cardinals can believe in his talent and still recognize that their offensive-line planning needs more redundancy than it had a month ago.

For now, the practical question is simpler. Arizona has to get through Sunday with a new left tackle, potentially a new right guard and a quarterback facing an aggressive Detroit front. Johnson's season is over. Williams' opportunity is arriving earlier than expected. The next few weeks will show whether that forced transition can become one of the few useful developments in a difficult start.

The Cardinals cannot replace Johnson's experience with one transaction. Their best chance is to turn the loss into a controlled transition: trust Williams enough to let him play, support him intelligently, and keep Wills developing as veteran insurance.

For a 1-3 team, that is not a glamorous answer. It may be the right one. Arizona's season now depends partly on whether a seventh-round rookie can make the jump from extra blocker to starting left tackle without the offense collapsing around him.
