Kuminga Chose Minnesota Over the Lakers — Now He Has to Prove the Bet Was Worth It

After a summer in which several teams showed real interest, the 23-year-old forward chose Minnesota on a short deal and used his introductory press conference to make one thing clear: he believes the Timberwolves gave him the best basketball situation available.
That makes the next season unusually important. Kuminga is not arriving as a long-term franchise investment with five years of security. He is arriving on a two-year, $12.4 million contract with a player option in the second season, which gives him a realistic path back to the market next summer if the partnership works.
The Lakers, Bulls and Trail Blazers all made offers during free agency. Los Angeles was prepared to give Kuminga a comparable starting opportunity and more than $12 million per year over three seasons. He still chose Minnesota, pointing to the roster, the young core and the winning environment the Timberwolves have built.
That decision creates a fascinating bargain for both sides. Minnesota gets a talented, explosive forward without committing long-term money. Kuminga gets the minutes and competitive setting he wanted, but he also accepts the pressure that comes with betting on himself again after two teams decided not to make him part of their long-term plans.
Minnesota gives Kuminga the role Golden State never fully could
The attraction starts with opportunity. Kuminga spent much of his Golden State career caught between two timelines. The Warriors were still trying to compete around Stephen Curry, which limited how much freedom they could give a developing forward whose best basketball often came when he was allowed to attack, make mistakes and play through uneven stretches.
That relationship eventually broke down. Golden State re-signed him and then moved him to Atlanta in February when the fit no longer looked sustainable. The Hawks gave him another chance to establish himself, but they declined his $24.3 million option for 2026-27 rather than make a larger financial commitment.
Minnesota presents a cleaner job description. Julius Randle and Naz Reid are gone, which opens frontcourt minutes. Kuminga is expected to have a genuine path to the starting power-forward spot alongside Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels. More importantly, he joins a team whose offensive hierarchy is already clear.
Anthony Edwards is the centerpiece. LaMelo Ball gives the Wolves another high-level creator. Kuminga does not have to arrive and prove he can run an offense. He can run the floor, attack tilted defenses, cut behind aggressive help, pressure the rim and use his athleticism against smaller forwards. If he embraces those responsibilities, Minnesota can give him something he never consistently had in Golden State: a substantial role that does not require him to become the star of every possession.
The short contract turns 2026-27 into another audition
The contract is what makes the story bigger than a normal mid-level signing. Kuminga did not choose the longest offer on the table. He chose a structure that can let him return to free agency quickly if he proves he deserves a larger deal.
There is obvious upside. Minnesota enters the season with deep-playoff expectations after reshaping the roster around Edwards and Ball. Winning meaningful games can change how the league views a player, especially one whose reputation has been shaped as much by fit and role as by raw production. A strong season in a defined job could make Kuminga far more attractive next summer than he was during this one.
There is also real risk. The same bet already became complicated once. Golden State gave Kuminga another contract but ultimately traded him when the relationship deteriorated. Atlanta then passed on a much larger team option. If Minnesota becomes a third stop where his role, efficiency or decision-making remains inconsistent, teams may stop viewing him primarily through the lens of untapped upside.
That is why his fit with Ball matters. Ball can create transition opportunities and find cutters before the defense is set. Edwards attracts the strongest perimeter attention. Gobert occupies the interior. Those pieces should give Kuminga chances to attack advantages rather than manufacture offense from scratch. The Wolves do not need him to prove every skill that once made him a top-seven draft pick. They need him to turn his athleticism into reliable winning possessions.
Kuminga called Minnesota one of the best decisions he has made. The roster gives him a credible chance to make that statement look prescient. But the contract ensures the verdict will come quickly. If he becomes a dependable starter on a team playing deep into the spring, he can re-enter the market with leverage and a cleaner résumé. If the same questions follow him again, the “potential” label will become harder to sell.
For Minnesota, that is an excellent risk-reward equation. For Kuminga, it is the clearest opportunity he has had to turn promise into proof.
