Rory McIlroy practices at Delhi Golf Club during the 2026 DP World India Championship week

Nørgaard's 66 Survived Delhi's Storm — McIlroy Is Four Shots Back

GOATIFY

The biggest surprise on the opening day of the 2026 DP World India Championship was not the thunderstorm that swallowed almost five hours of play. It was the player who handled Delhi Golf Club best. Niklas Nørgaard, a Danish power hitter competing on a layout that strips much of the advantage from a driver, shot a six-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead. Rory McIlroy and defending champion Tommy Fleetwood both finished at two under, four strokes behind, while three challengers reached five under.

The scores came with a crucial warning: Thursday's first round was unfinished. Lightning and heavy rain forced a long stoppage, and 12 players had not even teed off when darkness ended the day. That makes the leaderboard a provisional snapshot, not a completed 18-hole comparison across the field. Even so, the opening round revealed the contest's central theme. At Delhi, precision, patience and the ability to restart after a disruption can matter more than raw length.

Nørgaard beat the course by refusing to overpower it

Nørgaard's 66 was a striking reversal of what the course appeared to demand from him. The 34-year-old Dane is known for his power, but Delhi Golf Club's narrow, tree-lined corridors punish misses so severely that distance can become a liability. He accepted the trade-off, relied on irons to keep the ball in play and built his round around approach shots and putting rather than trying to overpower the property.

His card contained six birdies and an eagle against two bogeys. A burst of scoring after a measured start moved him clear, and birdies at his final two holes gave him a one-shot advantage over Tom McKibbin, Thomas Detry and Eugenio Chacarra. That finish matters: on a day when the weather interrupted momentum and the course discouraged aggression, Nørgaard still found a way to make his closing stretch the most productive part of his round.

He arrived in India with one DP World Tour victory and two runner-up finishes during 2026, including a near miss at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship earlier in October. His opening 66 therefore was not the product of an unknown player catching fire for one afternoon. It was a contender finding a version of his game suited to a course that seems designed to neutralize his biggest strength. The practical difference between a safe tee shot and a costly miss can be greater here than the distance between two clubs.

That is why his lead is more meaningful than the single-stroke margin suggests. He showed that he can score aggressively after positioning the ball conservatively. The question for the remaining rounds is whether that balance survives once the entire field has completed its first round and the leading group begins to feel the pressure. A good opening round establishes a blueprint; defending a lead on such a narrow course requires executing it repeatedly.

McIlroy and Fleetwood are four back — with room to improve

Rory McIlroy plays a shot at Delhi Golf Club during the 2026 India Championship week

McIlroy's two-under 70 was solid without being especially satisfying. Starting at the 10th, he opened with a bogey, then recovered with birdies at the 13th, 15th and 18th. Another birdie on the second hole briefly improved his position before a bogey at the third. Six straight pars to finish meant he returned a score that kept him in the tournament but did not make full use of the scoring chances available to the early starters.

His day also illustrated the strange rhythm created by the weather. When play was suspended for nearly five hours, McIlroy went back to his hotel, ate and worked on his swing using weighted clubs. That was more than an amusing detail from an unusually long delay. He has been trying to remove habits that crept into his technique during the middle of the season, and the pause gave him another opportunity to rehearse the movements he wants to trust under tournament pressure.

Delhi presents an unusually pointed test of those adjustments. McIlroy has deliberately removed driver and 3-wood from his bag for this event, preferring more controlled tee shots on a 6,912-yard course with unforgiving landing areas. That strategic decision was already the story before the first round. Now the evidence is mixed: he kept his score under par, but Nørgaard demonstrated that the same restrained approach can still produce a much lower number. The next step is converting control into more birdie opportunities.

Fleetwood's matching 70 carried a different frustration. The defending champion made six birdies, but two bogeys and a double bogey at his final hole wiped away much of that good work. A year after winning the inaugural event, he remains close enough to recover, yet his opening round showed how quickly one poor finish can undo several hours of clean scoring. Neither star needs a dramatic reinvention to contend; both need a round with fewer costly mistakes.

Chacarra, Reed and Chouhan make Friday more than a leaderboard chase

Patrick Reed follows through on a golf shot ahead of the 2026 India Championship

The immediate danger to Nørgaard comes from the three players just one stroke back. McKibbin, Detry and Chacarra all signed for five-under 67s, with Chacarra's closing bogey preventing him from sharing the lead. Their position matters for the tournament, but Chacarra's round also has implications beyond Delhi. He entered the week second in the Race to Dubai, behind Patrick Reed and ahead of McIlroy, so a strong finish could change the season-long standings as well as the trophy race.

Reed had reached two over through four holes before the weather interrupted his round. That is a very small sample and not a final-round verdict, but it creates an intriguing contrast: the points leader was still trying to establish his opening score while two of his closest rivals had already completed useful rounds. Four events remain in the Race to Dubai, including this tournament, and every result in the closing stretch can influence the eventual order. Chacarra does not need to win on Thursday; he needs to keep turning a good start into points over the full week.

There is also a home challenge that deserves more attention than the global names. Om Prakash Chouhan, 40, shot a four-under 68 to become the best-placed Indian among the completed rounds, with six birdies and two bogeys. His familiarity with Delhi Golf Club helped him choose conservative lines from the tee and attack from the fairway. He even chipped in from roughly 15 yards at the sixth. That is a practical illustration of how course knowledge can compensate for a gap in world ranking or driving distance.

Saptak Talwar opened with a one-under 71, while several other home players still had golf to finish. The interruption left 12 competitors without a first-round tee shot and others facing a partial round on Friday morning. Those staggered starts make early comparisons imperfect, especially if the course changes after heavy rain. Nørgaard owns the clubhouse benchmark, but the leaderboard could look different once everyone has played the same number of holes. The next day's most important battle may be against the clock as much as against the course.

Delhi's first day produced an unexpected leader and a crowded chasing group, but no final first-round verdict. Nørgaard proved that he can win the accuracy contest even when the course takes his driver out of the equation. McIlroy and Fleetwood stayed within four shots despite leaving strokes behind, Chacarra strengthened his position in the season-long race, and Chouhan gave the home crowd a genuine contender to follow.

Friday's first priority is completing the interrupted round. After that, the central question is whether Nørgaard can keep the same disciplined scoring pattern when the pressure grows. If he can, the 66 will look like the start of a serious title bid. If not, the stars four shots back and the trio one behind are close enough to make Delhi's weather-hit opening day feel like only the beginning.
