Allisha Gray’s Injury Changed Game 1 — Atlanta’s Depth Changed the Series

GOATIFY

Atlanta’s 92-82 Game 1 win over New York became a stress test when Allisha Gray, the Dream’s leading scorer at 19 points per game, injured her left hand in the first half. She briefly returned with two fingers taped, then left for good after aggravating the same hand.

The Dream did not merely survive without her. DeWanna Bonner supplied 23 points off the bench and Atlanta’s defense turned a three-point halftime deficit into a double-digit win.

Gray’s status changes Atlanta’s Game 2 equation

Atlanta Dream current-team context

Gray averaged 19 points per game and scored 22 in each first-round win. In Game 1 she left after contact in the first quarter, returned with two fingers taped, then left again before halftime.

Atlanta did not immediately announce a diagnosis, and Karl Smesko said he did not know whether Gray would be available for Game 2. That uncertainty matters because Gray is not simply a scorer: her shooting gravity changes where New York can send help, while her size gives Atlanta another two-way perimeter option.

New York must prepare for Gray while Atlanta preserves spacing without asking one replacement to imitate everything she does. If she cannot go, the cleaner solution is to divide her responsibilities across several players rather than force one substitute into Gray’s full offensive workload.

DeWanna Bonner gave Atlanta exactly the veteran response it needed

Rhyne Howard in current Atlanta Dream context

Atlanta needed more than replacement points. Bonner scored 23 of the Dream’s 27 bench points, grabbed nine rebounds and hit half of her three-point attempts. She also challenged the team at halftime after Atlanta trailed 40-37.

Atlanta opened the third quarter with a 17-2 run. Bonner could create a basket without forcing the offense into a new identity, scoring off movement and keeping possessions alive when the first look disappeared.

Her value was especially important because playoff injuries can tempt teams into simplifying everything around the missing star. Atlanta instead kept multiple decision-makers involved and let Bonner attack the possessions that naturally reached her.

If Gray misses time, Bonner does not have to become Atlanta’s new leading scorer. She has to absorb awkward possessions and give the Dream another experienced decision-maker, while Howard and Canada continue to create pressure from different parts of the floor.

Atlanta’s defense may be the safest insurance policy for Game 2

Atlanta Dream home arena

New York committed 21 turnovers, which Atlanta converted into 32 points. Nine came in the third quarter, when the Dream outscored the Liberty 32-15 and seized control.

That matters if Gray is limited because defense can reduce the amount of half-court creation Atlanta needs. Reese’s activity, Canada’s pressure and aggressive passing lanes can turn stops into early offense.

New York’s counter is to value possession. Sabrina Ionescu scored 27, but the Liberty repeatedly gave Atlanta chances to run after mistakes. If that turnover total drops, the Dream must prove they can generate enough clean offense without leaning on Gray.

Game 2 is less about finding one replacement and more about possession math. Atlanta leads 1-0 because its depth and defense covered the worst possible in-game development.

Atlanta would rather have Gray healthy, but Game 1 showed the Dream are not built around one answer. Bonner can create offense, Canada can raise the pressure and Reese can disrupt possessions.

That does not make Gray replaceable. It makes Atlanta harder to destabilize entering Game 2.
