TreVeyon Henderson playing for the New England Patriots against Las Vegas in October 2026

Henderson Is Out for Weeks — the Patriots' 45–17 Win Came at a Price

New England's 45–17 win over Las Vegas looked like a breakthrough for Drake Maye. By Tuesday, the urgent question was how much of that progress could survive the injury list. TreVeyon Henderson reportedly suffered a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss multiple weeks. Starting left tackle Will Campbell injured his knee, while defender Dre'Mont Jones left with a shoulder problem. The 3–2 Patriots now prepare for the Jets with a thinner backfield and new questions about protecting their quarterback.

Henderson's High Ankle Sprain Changes More Than the Backfield Rotation

Henderson left Sunday's win over Las Vegas in the second quarter after being tackled from behind on an 11-yard jet sweep. He was initially listed as questionable, but did not return. Tuesday's reported diagnosis clarified the problem: a high ankle sprain expected to keep him out for multiple weeks. Surgery is not expected, and the Patriots are optimistic about his recovery, but that is not a confirmed return date.

The timing is particularly frustrating because Henderson already missed the season opener with an ankle problem. Through four appearances in 2026, the second-year back has carried 42 times for 163 yards and a touchdown, adding two catches for 22 yards. Those totals understate what his speed can do to defensive alignments. A defense has to account for him on outside runs, motion and misdirection even when he is not the primary ball carrier.

His rookie campaign produced more than 1,200 scrimmage yards and ten touchdowns, evidence of the explosiveness New England hopes to preserve. The Patriots should not mistake a hopeful recovery forecast for permission to accelerate his return. A running back must plant, cut and burst through narrow lanes. If the ankle is not ready for those movements, a premature return could reduce the very traits that make Henderson valuable. New England needs a functional short-term replacement plan, not a rushed attempt to recreate his full role.

Stevenson Can Carry the Load — Kiner Still Has to Earn the Trust

Rhamondre Stevenson is the obvious foundation of the replacement plan. He was already New England's trusted starter, particularly when the offense needed reliable pass protection and experienced decision-making beside Drake Maye. With Henderson unavailable, the Patriots can increase Stevenson's share without installing a completely different system. His workload will likely expand across early downs, short-yardage situations and passing plays.

There was encouraging evidence against the Raiders. Stevenson and Corey Kiner combined for 116 rushing yards on 19 carries, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt, and Stevenson scored a touchdown. The younger Kiner also demonstrated the speed to contribute, but he lost a fumble on his first touch. That mistake was New England's only turnover and a reminder that a backup's expanded role is earned through ball security, blocking assignments and consistency as well as yardage.

It would be tempting to make Stevenson an every-down solution. That creates its own risk: the player the Patriots most need to keep healthy would be asked to run, protect Maye and catch passes on almost every important snap. A better approach gives Kiner a defined package and builds his responsibilities as he proves dependable. Lan Larison, on the practice squad, offers another possible depth option if an additional back is needed on game day.

Neither Stevenson nor Kiner is a direct copy of Henderson. The Patriots can replace the carries more easily than they can replace the threat of his acceleration on the perimeter. New England should distribute those responsibilities through formations and play design rather than asking one player to imitate everything the injured back does.

Campbell's Knee Problem May Be the Bigger Test for Drake Maye

Drake Maye in New England's October 2026 game against Las Vegas

Henderson's injury is the clearest headline, but Will Campbell's knee may create an equally important tactical problem. The starting left tackle went down during the same second-quarter stretch against Las Vegas and did not return. Campbell previously tore the MCL in that knee, so another sprain deserves careful evaluation. New England has not established a firm return timetable, and rookie Caleb Lomu is the expected replacement if Campbell cannot play.

Lomu's assignment matters because Maye's outstanding Raiders performance depended on more than spectacular throws. The quarterback passed for 374 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing score. To sustain that level, he needs to trust the edge of his protection and work through reads without constantly anticipating pressure. A young tackle can affect the offense even without allowing a sack: quicker throws, additional tight-end help and fewer routes downfield all change what the quarterback can attempt.

The backfield injuries compound that calculation. Stevenson is valuable in pass protection, but keeping him in to block means removing one potential receiver from the pattern. If the Patriots send him out, they may need to help Lomu with a tight end or ask the rookie to handle more isolated rushers. There is no completely cost-free answer.

New England can use quick passes, movement and selective protection help without abandoning the aggressive passing attack that overwhelmed Las Vegas. The key is to build a plan that fits the available personnel rather than assume the Raiders game's exact structure will carry over. Against the Jets, pass protection may determine whether Maye can continue to exploit the matchups he sees.

A.J. Brown's Possible Return Offers Hope, Not an Immediate Cure

Mike Vrabel on New England's sideline in October 2026

The Patriots could receive help at receiver while Henderson recovers. A.J. Brown, sidelined since the opener with a high ankle sprain, is eligible to return to practice this week. That is encouraging, but it does not guarantee he will play against the Jets. Mike Vrabel's staff still needs to assess his movement and readiness before committing to a game-day role.

Brown's return would give Maye a dependable outside target capable of drawing coverage attention away from other receivers. It could partly offset the explosiveness lost from the backfield. It would not solve every problem. New England has also been without Mack Hollins, and even a healthy star receiver cannot fix protection breakdowns or replace the balance of a two-back running game.

Other injuries need monitoring. Dre'Mont Jones left the Raiders game with a shoulder issue, and cornerback Charles Woods needed evaluation before returning. The next practice reports could influence the defense's depth and how aggressively the offense needs to play. The Jets matchup is a divisional test, not merely a chance to celebrate the previous week's scoreline.

The practical response is to build around Stevenson, give Kiner manageable assignments, protect Maye and treat Brown's return as a possibility rather than a certainty. New England has evidence of its offensive ceiling. Now it needs to show how much of that ceiling survives when important players are missing.

The Raiders win was genuine progress, but it came at a cost. Henderson's recovery should not be rushed; Stevenson must anchor the backfield, Kiner needs a controlled role and the line must keep Maye protected. A.J. Brown's possible return would help, but it is not guaranteed. The Jets game will reveal whether New England can translate one outstanding performance into sustained offense with a thinner roster.
