Karl-Anthony Towns Trade Talk Is Real — These 3 Teams Show What the Knicks Would Be Choosing Between

GOATIFY

Karl-Anthony Towns helped deliver the championship New York spent more than half a century chasing. Four months later, the Knicks are already confronting the uncomfortable question that follows expensive success: how much of the title core can they afford to keep together?

Towns has made his preference clear. He wants to stay, and he has publicly signaled a willingness to structure a deal that helps preserve the roster. The gap is still enormous. He is eligible for an extension worth roughly $276 million, while reporting around the negotiations has put New York’s offer around $200 million. Shams Charania has now added a sharper consequence: Towns and Josh Hart could become trade candidates if extensions do not materialize.

That does not mean a Towns trade is imminent. It means the contract problem has moved from offseason bookkeeping into a genuine roster decision. If New York ever reaches the point where it has to listen, three destinations illustrate the choices involved: Washington offers a star-for-star reset, Golden State offers a win-now gamble around Stephen Curry, and Cleveland offers the most complicated question of all — how much young frontcourt value is too much to surrender for a champion center.

Washington is the cleanest star-for-star reset

Washington is the cleanest conceptual fit because the Wizards already have their own uncertain superstar frontcourt situation. Anthony Davis has said he will decide on his player option after the season, which gives Washington a reason to think beyond the next 82 games even if it believes it can contend now.

A Towns-for-Davis framework would be enormous and would require far more than matching names on a trade machine. But the basketball logic is easy to understand. New York would receive an elite veteran big who can defend at the highest level when healthy, while Washington would get a younger offensive hub with championship experience and a game that naturally complements Trae Young and top pick AJ Dybantsa.

For the Wizards, Towns would stretch the floor for Young’s pick-and-roll game and give Dybantsa room to attack without another traditional big occupying the lane. He also proved during New York’s title run that he can function as more than a scoring center. His passing and decision-making from the elbow became part of the Knicks’ best offense, and that versatility would matter on a roster trying to accelerate a young core.

The complication is obvious: Washington would need confidence that Towns would sign long term, while New York would have to decide whether Davis’ age and future option create more certainty or simply a different kind of risk. A trade only makes sense if it solves the Knicks’ financial problem without weakening their championship window.

That is why Washington is interesting rather than obvious. It has the star salary and ambition to enter the conversation, but New York would be trading a 30-year-old champion who has said he wants to stay for another expensive big with his own long-term decision approaching.

Golden State would be betting everything on Curry's window

Golden State represents a different bet. The Warriors have already made clear that the final years of Stephen Curry’s career are not supposed to be ceremonial. Curry took less than his maximum on his latest extension, and the organization has continued searching for another major piece after missing on other star targets.

Towns would give Golden State something it has rarely had during the Curry era: a high-volume shooting center who can punish switches, score inside and operate as a secondary playmaker. Pairing Curry’s movement with Towns’ shooting would stretch defenses far beyond the normal geometry of an NBA offense. A center who can drag a rim protector to the arc also creates cleaner cutting space for everyone else.

The cost is the problem. Golden State’s most realistic matching salary would likely begin with Kristaps Porziņģis, and New York would still want meaningful draft compensation or another player who helps immediately. The Warriors cannot treat every future first-round pick as untouchable if they genuinely want another title with Curry, but emptying the cupboard for Towns would narrow their margin for error.

There is also a philosophical question for the Knicks. Porziņģis can reproduce some of Towns’ spacing and rim protection, but availability and continuity matter for a defending champion. New York would not be rebuilding. Any return has to keep the team capable of winning the East immediately.

That makes Golden State the most aggressive scenario. The Warriors would be betting that Curry plus Towns creates a championship offense before the window closes. The Knicks would be betting that they can turn one expensive star into a cheaper or more flexible package without surrendering the quality that made them champions.

Cleveland has the toughest value line to draw

Donovan Mitchell in a Cleveland Cavaliers uniform

Cleveland may be the most fascinating option because the Cavaliers are already close enough to contention that a major trade would be about changing the shape of a contender, not starting over.

Donovan Mitchell remains the franchise centerpiece, and Cleveland has spent years building around a deep frontcourt. If Towns truly became available, the Cavaliers could consider whether his shooting and offensive versatility solve the postseason problems that have repeatedly appeared when defenses shrink the floor and force half-court possessions.

The hard line should be Evan Mobley. He is 25, entering his prime and offers two-way value that is extremely difficult to replace. Trading Mobley for Towns would improve some offensive dimensions while creating a new defensive problem and shortening the age curve of the core. That is a massive price for a player whose next contract is the reason New York would be considering a trade in the first place.

A package centered on Jarrett Allen, additional salary and draft assets would be easier to justify from Cleveland’s perspective. Towns beside Mitchell and James Harden would create a high-end offensive trio with shooting at every level. New York, however, would need enough additional value to explain why it moved the center who helped win the championship.

That tension is exactly what makes the broader Towns situation important. The Knicks do not have to trade him now, and winning a title gives them every reason to prioritize continuity. But the second-apron pressure is real, Hart also needs a new deal, and the front office has already shown it will make painful financial decisions after losing Mitchell Robinson.

The best outcome for New York is still an extension that keeps Towns in orange and blue without destroying the flexibility needed to retain the rest of the core. If that compromise never arrives, the market will not be empty. Washington, Golden State and Cleveland all have reasons to call — and each potential framework would force the Knicks to decide what they value more: star power, financial flexibility, youth or the continuity of a championship team.

For now, the trade possibilities are leverage points rather than predictions. Towns has said he wants to remain a Knick, and New York has no basketball reason to break up a title-winning core casually. The issue is whether ownership’s determination to stay below the second apron can coexist with paying championship players what the market says they are worth.

That is the real story behind the rumors. The Knicks finally reached the top. Now the hardest decisions are about the price of staying there.
