Paul George Heard the Jaylen Brown Reaction — Boston Needs a Different Partnership

Brown had spent a decade with the Celtics, won a championship, earned Finals MVP and became one of the defining players of this era. George arrived on the other side of that deal with enough experience to know that fans were not going to treat it like a normal roster move.
That makes his first message to Boston important: he is not trying to become a copy of Brown.
The Celtics acquired George from Philadelphia in July, sending Brown to the 76ers and receiving George plus future draft compensation. It was one of the biggest moves of the 2026 offseason, but the most useful way to evaluate it is not to ask whether a 36-year-old George can reproduce Brown possession for possession. Boston has changed the shape of the roster around Jayson Tatum. George's job is to make that new shape work.
He comes to Boston after averaging 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 37 games for Philadelphia last season. The résumé is much bigger than one year: nine All-Star selections and six All-NBA teams. The question now is how those skills translate into a Celtics lineup that needs a second high-level wing, experienced decision-making and two-way flexibility without asking George to carry every part of Brown's old role.
Boston Didn't Trade Brown for a Straight Replacement
The emotional part of the trade is obvious. Brown was not just another starter leaving Boston. He was connected to the franchise's recent championship identity, and George acknowledged that supporters would need time to process the change. That was a sensible starting point because pretending the transition is seamless would ignore what Brown meant to the team.
The basketball part is more nuanced. Boston did not simply exchange one wing for another and preserve the same roster. The Celtics also added veteran guard Mike Conley and center Mitchell Robinson, while other pieces moved during an offseason reset. That means George is entering a different ecosystem from the one Brown left.
The trade return matters, too. Philadelphia received Brown. Boston received George along with first-round picks in 2028 and 2031 and additional second-round draft compensation. The Celtics therefore made a move that changes both the present roster and their future asset base.
For George, the cleanest route is to avoid treating Brown's previous production as a checklist. Boston does not need him to imitate every drive, defensive assignment or late-clock possession. It needs him to supply the parts of his own game that fit next to Tatum: shooting, secondary creation, size on the wing, switching ability and enough playmaking to keep possessions from becoming predictable.
That distinction should lower some of the noise around the trade. George will inevitably be compared with Brown because they changed teams in the same transaction, but the Celtics can judge the move by whether the new lineup functions rather than whether two individual stat lines match.
George's Job Next to Tatum Is More Specific Than It Looks
Tatum remains the center of Boston's basketball plan, so George's value will be measured partly by how easily he can complement him. The Celtics do not need two players trying to dominate the same possessions. They need a second wing who can punish the attention Tatum creates, organize offense when Tatum is off the ball and take difficult defensive assignments without forcing the team to reshape itself every trip down the floor.
George has spent much of his career toggling between those responsibilities. He can operate with the ball, but he has also been an effective catch-and-shoot threat. He has the size to defend larger wings and enough lateral mobility to give Boston options at the point of attack. His passing does not have to turn him into the full-time offensive engine; it simply has to keep the ball moving when defenses overload toward Tatum.
That makes role clarity more important than raw usage. If George is asked to create every difficult shot, replace Brown's downhill pressure and simultaneously handle the hardest defensive matchup every night, Boston would be trying to recreate the old roster through one player. If his responsibilities are narrower, the fit becomes easier to understand.
The Celtics can use George as a connector between Tatum, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard, while allowing the guards to carry more of the organizing burden. In lineups with multiple shooters, George's ability to attack a rotating defense may be more valuable than asking him to initiate against a set one. On defense, his size gives Joe Mazzulla another switchable option without automatically committing Tatum to every elite wing assignment.
That is the partnership Boston needs: not a hierarchy battle, but two big wings whose strengths can overlap without becoming redundant.
Conley and Robinson Reveal the Shape of Boston's Reset
George is the headline addition, but Conley and Robinson explain what Boston is trying to build around him. The Celtics did not spend the offseason collecting players who all need the ball. They added veterans with defined skills and significant experience.
George and Conley alone bring a combined 35 NBA seasons, more than 2,000 regular-season games and nearly 250 playoff appearances. Conley, now entering his 20th season, is expected to work behind White and Pritchard rather than demand a starring role. He averaged 4.5 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season, numbers that fit the idea of a stabilizing reserve more than a volume scorer.
Robinson provides a different kind of specialization. The center arrives after being part of New York's 2026 championship team, having averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 60 games last season. Behind Neemias Queta, he gives Boston rebounding, rim protection, screening and interior physicality without needing plays designed around him.
Put those additions together and the logic becomes clearer. Boston is surrounding Tatum with players who know how to function in narrower roles. George can still take on major offensive responsibility, but Conley and Robinson do not need touches to justify their minutes. That should help the Celtics preserve spacing and decision-making while adding more veteran depth.
The strategy also gives Mazzulla lineup flexibility. Conley can settle second units. Robinson can change the rebounding and rim-protection profile of a game. George can play alongside either guard-heavy or bigger groups. None of that guarantees the new roster will click, but it shows that Boston's offseason was built around complementary functions rather than simply collecting recognizable names.
The “Rebirth” Only Matters If the Roles Make Sense by Camp
George described the move to Boston as a rebirth, and it is easy to understand why that language fits. He is joining his fifth NBA team, moving from a difficult Philadelphia season into a franchise that still expects to compete deep into the postseason.
But the useful part of that idea is not the slogan. It is the opportunity to simplify what the Celtics need from him.
George does not have to erase the reaction to Brown leaving. He does not have to prove the trade was correct in October. He does not have to become the only secondary creator, the only perimeter stopper or the only veteran voice. Boston has enough experienced players that those responsibilities can be distributed.
What matters by training camp is whether the new group understands those boundaries. Tatum remains the primary star. White and Pritchard already know the system and can carry significant ball-handling responsibility. Conley can organize. Robinson can protect the paint and attack the glass. George can then be used where his versatility creates the most value instead of where the old roster happened to use Brown.
That is also why George's championship urgency lines up with Boston's approach. He and Conley have played a huge number of NBA games without winning a title. Robinson arrives with fresh championship experience. The Celtics are betting that veterans with different histories can converge around a clear goal and accept the jobs required to reach it.
There will still be unavoidable comparisons with Brown, especially when Boston and Philadelphia meet. Those are part of the trade. But the Celtics' season will not be decided by which player wins a one-night statistical comparison. It will be decided by whether Boston's new pieces create a coherent team around Tatum.
George's first comments suggest he understands the distinction. He heard the reaction. He knows whose place in the locker room he is entering. The next step is more practical: turn a dramatic trade into a partnership that looks natural once the games begin.
