Payton Pritchard playing for the Boston Celtics during the 2026 playoffs

Tatum and White Scored 19 Each — Pritchard's 11 Assists Told the Bigger Story

Boston's 114–93 preseason victory over Charlotte on October 14 came with the familiar headline names. Jayson Tatum and Derrick White scored 19 points apiece, Mitchell Robinson finished a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, and the Celtics improved to 3–0 in exhibition play. But the number that might best explain the shape of this new roster belonged to Payton Pritchard: 11 assists without a single turnover.

That is a useful contrast for a team rebuilding its identity after Jaylen Brown's departure and the arrival of Paul George. Boston does not need every possession to end with Tatum creating a difficult shot. It needs dependable decisions, aggressive defense, and enough interior finishing to punish opponents who load up on the perimeter. Wednesday offered examples of all three, although a preseason game remains a rehearsal rather than proof of what will survive in April.

Tatum and Robinson Made the New Starting Five Look Familiar

Joe Mazzulla used the same opening group for a second straight exhibition: Derrick White, Jordan Walsh, Jayson Tatum, Paul George and Mitchell Robinson. That choice is worth watching because it leaves Pritchard as an immediate playmaking option from the bench rather than forcing the Celtics to start every available creator. Tatum still sets the ceiling, but this arrangement gives Boston size across the frontcourt and a defensive-minded guard next to its primary star.

Robinson scored Boston's first six points, with a putback and a lob from Tatum illustrating how quickly the pair can generate simple baskets. The big man's 12 points on five makes in five attempts were not built around elaborate post touches. They came from occupying the space near the rim, staying available above it and turning the attention paid to Tatum into high-percentage chances. Boston has needed that kind of reliable interior threat in games when outside shots are not falling.

Tatum scored 11 in the opening quarter and 14 by halftime before finishing with 19 in 29 minutes. His impact was not limited to scoring. The passing angles that produced Robinson's early opportunities returned after the break, including another alley-oop during a 10–2 Boston burst. That combination matters more than a preseason points total: a defense has to decide whether to crowd Tatum, protect the lob or stay attached to shooters.

There are limits to the conclusion. Charlotte's rotations are still being tested, and the Celtics' opening five has not faced the pressure of a regular-season scouting plan. Yet the repetitions were meaningful. Boston did not have to reinvent its offense to accommodate a new starting center or a veteran wing. It asked Tatum to make the correct read and Robinson to finish the resulting opportunity. For a roster that has changed so much, the simplicity is an encouraging early sign.

White's Pressure Created Extra Possessions as Boston Tested Two Bigs

White's 19 points were valuable, but the defensive sequences were the clearer indication of Boston's intended identity. He collected four steals in the first half as the Celtics forced Charlotte into hurried decisions. At the break, Boston had won the turnover battle 13–4. That imbalance helped create easier scoring chances on a night when the offense was not always smooth from the perimeter.

White supplied every point of a 9–0 second-quarter run, doing it while Boston experimented with Robinson and Neemias Queta together. Two traditional bigs sharing the court can invite questions about spacing, especially against quicker lineups. The counterargument is that size, offensive rebounding and ball pressure can compensate if the perimeter defenders keep opponents from attacking cleanly. One successful stretch does not settle that debate, but it gives Mazzulla a real combination to test again.

George's shooting illustrated the difference between evaluating a box score and evaluating a fit. He missed his first six attempts before making a catch-and-shoot three after White kept a possession alive on the offensive glass. A veteran scorer going cold in October is not particularly revealing. Whether he continues to defend with energy, occupy the right spaces and move without the ball is more important for the balance of a Tatum-led lineup.

Charlotte did push back. Brandon Miller scored 12 points in the third quarter, and the visitors reduced the deficit to six before Boston steadied itself. That stretch is a reminder that pressure defense is not a permanent shield. The Celtics still need to protect the paint after an aggressive closeout and avoid giving away clean looks when the first wave of pressure is beaten.

The encouraging part was Boston's response rather than the temporary margin. White's activity and the willingness to try different frontcourt combinations suggest the coaching staff is looking for multiple ways to win possessions. The regular season will show which versions can defend without sacrificing spacing or offensive rhythm.

Pritchard's 11 Assists and Zero Turnovers Were the Quiet Difference

Pritchard's new two-year, $44.2 million extension has understandably attracted attention, but his work against Charlotte provided a more immediate argument for his importance. He finished with 11 assists and no turnovers. That is the type of production a team needs from a guard who can enter a game, raise its tempo and still protect the ball while sharing minutes with several different scorers.

The assist total was not merely the result of passing around the perimeter until somebody hit a jumper. Pritchard repeatedly connected with the Celtics' centers, including late third-quarter feeds to Queta that helped prevent Charlotte's comeback from becoming a lead change. One possession required a patient adjustment near the end of the shot clock before Queta received the ball in a position to score. Those decisions are especially valuable when a defense has already disrupted the initial action.

Pritchard has demonstrated that he can score in bunches. He put up 25 points against Philadelphia earlier in the preseason and averaged a career-best 17.0 points during the 2025–26 regular season. The next question is how Boston uses him when Tatum, White and George all need touches. Eleven assists without a giveaway point toward one answer: he can increase the value of everybody else's opportunities instead of demanding a high-volume shooting role every night.

That does not make him a conventional pass-first point guard, nor does it guarantee this efficiency will last against regular-season defensive schemes. It shows a useful second gear. Pritchard can look for his own shot when a bench unit needs offense, then shift toward distributing when bigger scorers and finishers share the floor. His shooting threat helps that transition because defenders cannot simply back away and treat him as a stationary passer.

Boston's roster construction makes that flexibility particularly relevant. Brown's departure changes the distribution of shots and late-clock responsibilities. George brings experience, but he is also learning a new system. Pritchard's familiarity with Mazzulla's principles can help connect the pieces. Wednesday's zero-turnover line was one game, yet the underlying skill — making quick decisions without rushing them — is exactly what a new-look team needs.

Queta's 16 Points and a 29–16 Fourth Quarter Showed the Depth

Neemias Queta celebrating in a Boston Celtics jersey during the 2026 playoffs

Queta scored 16 points in 24 minutes and became one of the strongest arguments for Boston's frontcourt depth. His production came after Robinson had already shown how useful a true rim target can be alongside Tatum. The contrast gives the Celtics options: Robinson can start possessions with screening and interior presence, while Queta can keep pressure on the rim when the rotations change.

The third quarter was the closest Charlotte came to taking control. Miller's scoring reduced Boston's cushion to six, but Queta's finishing helped the Celtics carry an 85–77 advantage into the final period. He followed with an assertive drive from the perimeter after faking a handoff, showing that his contribution need not be limited to catching lobs or cleaning up misses. Against a defense anticipating a routine exchange, that change of direction created a clear path to the basket.

The fourth quarter also showed why Mazzulla can afford to look beyond a short list of established names in October. Luka Garza hit from outside and finished a transition opportunity, while Hugo González contributed a three and a smart pass. Later, Ron Harper Jr., Chris Cenac Jr. and Dillon Mitchell entered, and the final possessions included scores created from defensive pressure. Boston won the period 29–16, turning a game that had briefly tightened into a comfortable result.

Depth is easy to praise in the preseason, when opponents rotate heavily and the last minutes often belong to players competing for roles. The harder test comes when Boston must decide which combinations deserve meaningful minutes against a full-strength opponent. Garza's shooting, Queta's mobility and Robinson's finishing each solve a different problem, but the coaching staff will have to choose when those advantages outweigh potential defensive or spacing costs.

There is another reason the result matters. Boston did not need Tatum to rescue the final quarter. The bench extended the lead with its own movement, energy and defensive activity. That is a healthier model than asking one star to carry every scoring stretch. The Celtics finish their preseason schedule at Philadelphia on October 16 before opening the regular season at Detroit on October 20, when these combinations will begin to face a more meaningful test.

Boston's 3–0 preseason record is a positive backdrop, not a forecast. Charlotte had a six-point path back into Wednesday's game, George endured a difficult shooting start, and the Celtics still have to discover which big-man pairings work against regular-season lineups. Those are real questions rather than reasons to dismiss the performance.

The clearer takeaway is how many ways Boston found to create an advantage. Tatum generated easy finishes for Robinson, White disrupted possessions, Queta supplied scoring behind the starters, and Pritchard organized the offense without giving the ball away. Eleven assists and zero turnovers will not always be the headline, but that kind of control may prove essential as this version of the Celtics takes shape.
