What Chris Bumstead's Retirement Means for Classic Physique

From 2019 through 2024, Bumstead won six consecutive Classic Physique Olympia titles and became the category’s most recognizable athlete.
His retirement after the 2024 Olympia created the first truly open race in years. It also forced fans to separate two questions that had become almost inseparable: who is the best Classic Physique competitor, and who is the biggest star in Classic Physique?
Six straight titles made CBum the reference point
Bumstead first reached the Olympia Classic Physique stage in 2017 and finished second. He was runner-up again in 2018, then started the six-title streak that ran from 2019 through 2024. By the time he announced his retirement after title number six, the silhouette associated with the division had become closely linked to his physique: broad shoulders, a small waist, sweeping legs and a presentation built around classic lines.
That matters because champions influence what competitors chase. Athletes do not copy a champion exactly, but a dominant winner changes the visual benchmark. During Bumstead’s reign, the conversation around Classic Physique increasingly centered on shape, balance, posing and the ability to carry substantial muscle without losing the category’s aesthetic identity.
The 2024 podium already showed the next wave was ready
Bumstead’s final Olympia was not a weak field waiting for him to leave. Mike Sommerfeld finished second in 2024 and Urs Kalecinski took third, while Ramon Dino finished fourth after entering the contest as one of the division’s biggest names. That depth made the post-Bumstead era immediately interesting.
The division no longer had a six-time champion absorbing the top spot every year. Small differences in conditioning, structure, posing and presentation suddenly had much larger consequences. A competitor who previously looked like a future challenger could now realistically become the champion in the very next season.
Ramon Dino proved the crown could move without the division losing momentum
The first Olympia after Bumstead’s retirement answered the most obvious question. Ramon Dino won the 2025 Classic Physique Olympia, giving the division a new champion and ending the long period in which every season began with Bumstead as the man to beat.
That result also showed why the category remained compelling. Dino had already been a major contender during the Bumstead era, including runner-up finishes in 2022 and 2023. His eventual title did not come from nowhere; it was the payoff to years spent competing against the standard Bumstead helped establish.
For fans, a changing champion can actually increase suspense. The division now has proof that the title can move, and every Olympia becomes less predictable than it was during the peak of a six-year dynasty.
Mike Sommerfeld and the new contenders keep raising the ceiling
Mike Sommerfeld followed his 2024 runner-up finish with another second place in 2025. That consistency makes him part of the new center of gravity in Classic Physique. The division is no longer organized around one dominant champion and a rotating group trying to close the gap. It is a more open hierarchy in which several athletes can plausibly shape the next era.
Bumstead’s biggest competitive legacy may therefore be the standard he left rather than the empty space on the podium. Future champions will still be compared with his combination of structure, conditioning, posing and stage presence, even when their physiques are built differently.
His commercial legacy is just as important. Bumstead helped make Classic Physique accessible to an audience far beyond contest-day bodybuilding fans. Replacing that level of star power is harder than replacing a champion. The division can crown new winners every year, but building another athlete with the same global recognition may take much longer.
That is what his retirement really changed: Classic Physique became less predictable competitively while still living under the shadow of its most successful champion. The crown has moved on. The benchmark has not disappeared.
