Haas Chose Câmara Over Ocon — The Portimão Test Explains Why

GOATIFY

Haas has made its biggest driver decision for 2027 before the current Formula 1 season is over. Rafael Câmara, the 21-year-old Brazilian leading the Formula 2 championship, has signed a multi-year agreement to replace Esteban Ocon. It is a promotion built on junior-category results, but the decisive evidence came in a much more revealing setting: a private test in an older Haas car at Portimão.

The move also changes the balance inside the American team. Oliver Bearman is expected to stay, although his next contract has not yet been formally announced, and would suddenly become the experienced reference point in one of Formula 1's youngest prospective pairings. For Haas, this is not simply a bet on tomorrow. It is a judgment about which kind of driver can help the team improve now.

The Portimão Test That Made Haas Choose Speed Over Experience

The most telling part of Haas's announcement is what it reveals about the selection process. Câmara did not win the seat on reputation alone. He drove the team's 2025 car during an August Testing of Previous Cars session at Portugal's Algarve circuit, where the staff could assess how quickly he absorbed information, responded to changing conditions and delivered repeatable performance. A private test strips away some of the noise of a junior championship: different cars, tyre management, traffic and race circumstances. The engineers can watch how a candidate communicates and improves over a controlled sequence of runs.

Team principal Ayao Komatsu described Câmara as the quickest of the contenders and stressed that the Brazilian demonstrated more than raw lap time. That distinction matters. A young driver who can put together one impressive lap is exciting; a driver who can explain what the car is doing, act on feedback and produce the next lap with less prompting is useful to a small team trying to develop a complicated machine. Haas evaluated other available options, including Jack Doohan, Ryo Hirakawa and Leonardo Fornaroli, before settling on Câmara.

The choice carries risk. A Testing of Previous Cars programme cannot reproduce the pressure of a full Grand Prix weekend, and the car used in Portugal was not the 2027 machine he will eventually race. Nor does the team have a complete picture of how the next set of regulations and upgrades will affect its competitive position. Yet the test gave Haas evidence it could control rather than merely projecting Formula 2 results onto Formula 1. In a midfield where tenths of a second can decide whether a weekend yields points, rapid adaptation is an asset with immediate value.

Haas also gains a driver it can build around on a multi-year timeline. Instead of treating 2027 as a one-season stopgap, it can plan engineering relationships, simulator work and race preparation with continuity in mind. The gamble is that Câmara's learning curve will be steep enough to repay that commitment.

Câmara's Three-Season Climb Has Been Remarkably Consistent

Câmara's path has an unusually clear pattern. He won the Formula Regional European Championship in 2024, followed it with the Formula 3 title in 2025, and entered his rookie Formula 2 campaign as an immediate contender. Heading into the final two F2 rounds, he leads Red Bull-backed Nikola Tsolov by seven points. That is a narrow advantage, not a championship already secured, but three Feature Race victories have demonstrated the pace and race execution that Haas wanted to see.

His development has taken place within Ferrari's junior system, giving him access to a structured pathway from karting into increasingly demanding single-seaters. The link is relevant because Haas has used Ferrari power units and technical cooperation throughout its Formula 1 history. A driver already familiar with Ferrari's development culture may find some aspects of the transition more natural, although he will still need to learn Haas-specific procedures, personnel and car behaviour.

There is a useful distinction between being quick in a junior formula and being prepared for Formula 1. In F2, everyone races broadly comparable equipment; in F1, the performance spread between cars is much wider and drivers must help engineers understand why a package works on one circuit but struggles on another. Câmara's junior results establish a strong baseline, while the Portimão test suggests he can transfer his skills into a heavier, more complex car. Neither alone guarantees success, but together they explain why Haas moved decisively.

The announcement also gives Brazil another prominent Formula 1 storyline. Audi already fields Gabriel Bortoleto, and Câmara plans to race with number 50 because Bortoleto uses his preferred number 5. The numerical detail is small, but the larger significance is not: two young Brazilians would be competing in different teams, with their progress measured against established international rivals rather than against each other alone. For Câmara, the immediate task remains finishing his F2 title fight without letting the Formula 1 news distract from the final weekends.

Bearman Could Become Haas's Team Leader at 21

Replacing a 30-year-old Grand Prix winner with a rookie does not mean Haas is ignoring experience. It means the team expects its other young driver to supply much of the reference point. Bearman is only 21 himself, yet his performances have made him the obvious candidate to anchor the next lineup. Komatsu has said he wants to continue with the Briton, while emphasizing that the formal contract details are still being finalized. Until an announcement arrives, the 2027 pairing should be described as expected rather than officially complete.

The evidence behind that confidence is measurable. Bearman has scored 23 of Haas's 30 constructors' points through 17 rounds of 2026. He also climbed from 13th to sixth in the Singapore sprint, a result that required opportunity recognition and decisive racing on a circuit where passing is difficult. Those performances are more valuable than an isolated highlight because Haas needs someone capable of maximizing the weekends when its car is on the edge of the points.

There is a difference, however, between being a team's leading scorer and being its leader. Next season Bearman may need to establish a reliable setup direction, give consistent technical feedback and help a newcomer understand the team's routines while continuing his own development. That is a demanding role for someone still early in his Formula 1 career. Haas will have to support him with experienced engineers rather than assuming his results automatically make him a finished team captain.

The Ferrari connection creates another layer. Both prospective drivers have been developed through the same academy, but that does not mean their driving styles or technical preferences will match. If they push the car in complementary directions, Haas could gain unusually rich feedback. If both are learning the limits of a new package simultaneously, the team may face difficult early weekends. The potential upside is a young pairing with years to grow together, not a guarantee of immediate improvement.

Ocon's Exit Changes the 2027 Grid — and Raises Haas's Stakes

For Esteban Ocon, the decision confirms the end of a chapter that began with the promise of an experienced race winner helping Haas progress. His departure had already been announced, so Câmara's signing is not a sudden dismissal. It is the final piece of a planned change in direction. Ocon still has the remainder of 2026 to contribute and to demonstrate his value elsewhere, but his immediate 2027 racing future remains unresolved.

The change should not be reduced to an age-versus-youth slogan. Experienced drivers can accelerate development, manage chaotic races and deliver points that inexperienced teammates miss. Equally, a smaller team cannot afford to treat a seat as a reward for past achievements when its own data suggests another candidate could offer greater future value. Haas has decided that Câmara's speed and capacity to learn justify the cost of giving up Ocon's experience.

Jack Doohan's situation illustrates how narrow the opportunities have become. The Australian had hoped his reserve role and testing opportunities might reopen a full-time seat after his Alpine exit. He was not selected, but Komatsu has indicated discussions about a continuing relationship are possible. That distinction matters: missing the race seat does not automatically end his connection to Haas, although no future arrangement should be treated as agreed until the team confirms it.

There is a competitive reason to make the decision now. Haas sits seventh in the constructors' standings with 30 points, and the United States Grand Prix at Austin on October 23–25 gives the American outfit an immediate home-stage opportunity to measure its present car. Next year's driver change will be judged against the same practical benchmark: can the team turn limited chances into points more consistently? A rookie pairing may offer higher long-term upside, but a difficult first half of 2027 would test the patience behind that strategy.

For now, Haas has given itself a coherent direction: invest in two young drivers with strong Ferrari development backgrounds and trust its engineers to turn talent into performance. The hardest part of that decision starts after the announcement, when results replace projections.

Câmara earned the seat by combining a rapid rise through the junior categories with a convincing Formula 1 test, not by reputation alone. Haas now has to prove it can translate that promise into a stable, competitive programme. Bearman's expected leadership, Ocon's departure and the remaining Formula 2 title fight make the 2027 plan compelling, but the real verdict will come when the new partnership has to deliver under race-weekend pressure.
