Federico Chingotto and Alejandro Galán together after their 2026 Miami P1 title

Sanyo Sees a Galán–Chingotto Split Coming — Their Coach's Exit Raises the Stakes

GOATIFY

One of padel's most successful partnerships has a new question hanging over it: not whether Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto can still win, but whether they will want to begin another season chasing the same target together. Former world No. 1 Sanyo Gutiérrez has publicly raised the possibility that the pair could part after 2026, pointing to their recent defeats and the approaching departure of longtime coach Jorge Martínez. That is an assessment from another player, not a decision announced by either member of the partnership.

Galán and Chingotto remain elite contenders. They won the Madrid P1 in September and are defending their Milan title this week. Yet consecutive losses to Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz have made the route back to world No. 1 feel less straightforward. The next few tournaments may reveal whether this is a temporary dip or a genuine turning point.

Two defeats to Stupaczuk and Sanz changed the conversation

For most teams, losing to another top-four pair twice in a fortnight would barely qualify as a crisis. The standards are different for Galán and Chingotto. Their partnership was built around relentless consistency: make finals, keep the pressure on Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, and convert every opening in the ranking race. The first crack came in Rotterdam, where Stupaczuk and Sanz beat them 6–4, 6–4 in the quarter-finals. A week later, the same opponents repeated the feat in the Düsseldorf semi-finals, 7–6, 6–4.

The sequence matters more than either result in isolation. Galán and Chingotto had spent much of the season forcing the top seeds to deal with them in finals. Suddenly another pair had found a repeatable route past them, winning four straight sets across two meetings. In Düsseldorf, Stupaczuk and Sanz survived a tight first-set tiebreak before closing the match without needing a decider. The official match figures show they won 87 of 166 points, a relatively narrow overall margin that underlines how efficiently they handled the biggest moments.

Stupaczuk supplies control, coverage and patient construction; left-hander Sanz brings speed and a more abrupt attacking rhythm. Against Galán and Chingotto, that combination has made the transition from defense to offense unusually uncomfortable. When Galán cannot dictate with the first overhead and Chingotto is made to defend one extra exchange, the favorite's normal patterns become harder to establish. That is a tactical reading of the matchup, not proof that either player has declined.

It also changes the wider landscape. Lebrón and Augsburger have shown they can challenge the top teams, while Stupaczuk and Sanz reached successive finals in Rotterdam and Düsseldorf. Coello and Tapia still won both of those finals, but the battle immediately behind them looks much less settled than it did earlier in the year.

Sanyo's warning is about the chase, not a confirmed breakup

Sanyo Gutiérrez did not say he had inside knowledge of a separation. Speaking while assessing the men's circuit, the veteran Argentine suggested that the emotional cost of chasing the same No. 1 pairing year after year might eventually become decisive. His concern followed Galán's own acknowledgment during the Germany event that reclaiming the top ranking had become increasingly difficult.

That distinction is essential. The partnership has not announced an end date, neither player has publicly confirmed a search for a new partner, and an outside prediction should not be reported as a completed move. Sanyo is offering a player's interpretation of the mood around the team. It deserves attention because he knows the pressures of the elite circuit, but it remains speculation until the people involved say otherwise.

The competitive psychology is easy to understand. A pair can play excellent padel, win major tournaments and still finish behind an extraordinary rival. Coello and Tapia have repeatedly turned close matches into trophies, including a Paris Major final in September when Galán and Chingotto led deep into the deciding set before the top seeds recovered. For a team whose ambition is not merely to be second best, those narrow missed opportunities accumulate.

Still, frustration is not the same as resignation. Galán and Chingotto have already demonstrated the ability to respond to setbacks. They won Madrid in September, defeating Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas in three sets, and they lifted the Milan trophy together in 2025. A strong result in Italy would quickly shift the discussion from a possible breakup to another title challenge. The most responsible conclusion today is that Sanyo has identified a plausible pressure point, not that he has predicted an inevitable outcome.

Jorge Martínez's departure creates a real decision for 2027

Coach Jorge Martínez discussing tactics with Galán and Chingotto during training

The most concrete change in this story is not a rumored player transfer. It is Jorge Martínez's announced plan to step away from coaching on the professional circuit after the season. Martínez has been a central figure in Galán's career and has worked with the Galán–Chingotto partnership since it formed in March 2024. His departure would alter the support structure that helped turn two highly accomplished individuals into one of the sport's most reliable teams.

In doubles padel, coaching is more than choosing which ball to attack. A stable bench can help manage emotional swings between points, adjust positioning against a left-handed opponent, decide when to slow the rally and keep two players aligned when their instincts diverge. Galán is often the more explosive finisher; Chingotto's anticipation and retrieval skills help create the platform for those attacks. The pair's value lies in how those different strengths work together under pressure.

A new coach might introduce useful ideas, particularly against opponents who have recently solved familiar patterns. It could also require an adjustment period at the worst possible moment in a ranking battle. The choice is not simply between preserving the past and starting over. Galán and Chingotto could remain partners and build a new coaching team, retain much of their existing structure while changing the voice on the bench, or eventually reconsider the partnership itself. None of those outcomes is confirmed.

Sanyo's broader point is that reaching world No. 1 requires alignment beyond individual skill. If a coach who has supplied that alignment for years leaves, the players must decide what kind of working environment gives them the best chance to compete in 2027. That is a substantial decision even if their relationship on court remains strong. It makes the offseason important without making a split inevitable.

Milan offers a response, not a deadline for the partnership

There is an obvious place for Galán and Chingotto to push back against the noise: the Allianz Cloud in Milan. They arrive as defending champions after a memorable 2025 final in which they recovered from a 2–6 opening set to beat Coello and Tapia 6–3, 6–0. That result remains a useful reminder of their ceiling. They have not suddenly forgotten how to challenge the world's leading pair, and the same venue offers another opportunity to make that argument on court.

Milan's P1 draw is not forgiving. The tournament runs through October 18 and awards 1,000 ranking points to its champions, while Coello and Tapia enter as the top seeds and Galán and Chingotto as the second seeds. They can meet only in the final. Even getting that far would be meaningful after the Rotterdam and Düsseldorf exits, because it would require the defending champions to navigate a field that now contains more than one genuine threat.

One result cannot settle a decision about next season. A quarter-final defeat would not prove that the partnership is finished, just as a title would not guarantee another year together. The better indicators are how they handle difficult stretches: whether Galán can impose his attacking game without forcing it, whether Chingotto can turn defensive rallies into openings, and whether their communication stays clear when the scoreboard tightens.

The calendar also leaves room for perspective. Paris, Rotterdam and Düsseldorf produced painful moments, but the season includes major victories and long stretches of outstanding play. If the pair return to finals and look comfortable adapting to the changing field, the case for continuity becomes stronger. If the same problems persist and the coaching transition feels disruptive, questions about 2027 will naturally grow. For now, Milan is a competitive test rather than a deadline for any announcement.

Sanyo's comments have made the Galán–Chingotto future a legitimate topic, but they have not turned a possibility into a fact. The immediate story is simpler: two losses to the same rising rivals, a coach preparing to leave and a defending champion pair trying to regain momentum in Milan. Galán and Chingotto still possess the results, chemistry and individual quality to challenge anyone. Whether they choose to keep doing it together in 2027 is a decision only they can make.
