Drake Maye Finally Looked Like Himself — and the Patriots Just Changed the AFC East Conversation

GOATIFY

Three weeks into the season, Drake Maye looked like a quarterback carrying the weight of every mistake. New England had scored only three offensive touchdowns, Maye had thrown six interceptions, and a team coming off a Super Bowl appearance was suddenly 1-2 and searching for an identity.

Buffalo was the worst possible place to hide from that pressure. Instead, it became the place Maye finally answered it. He threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns, ran for another 54 yards and led the decisive late drive as the Patriots stunned the previously unbeaten Bills 29-26. It was imperfect, but that is precisely why the win mattered: New England survived Maye’s mistakes and then trusted him to win the game anyway.

Drake Maye’s response mattered more than a clean stat line

Maye did not arrive in Buffalo with a normal early-season slump. He arrived with six interceptions through three games, a lost fumble and an offense that had struggled to turn drives into points. That context made every mistake against Buffalo feel dangerous. The interception before halftime — a ball Doubs initially controlled before losing it to Dee Alford — helped the Bills take a 17-14 lead. Maye also lost a fumble, keeping the turnover issue alive.

The difference was what happened around those mistakes. New England did not shrink the offense into a protection plan. Maye still attacked, finishing 22-of-37 for 269 yards with three touchdown passes. He also led the Patriots with 54 rushing yards, including a 26-yard scramble that helped set up Rhamondre Stevenson’s touchdown.

That matters because the Patriots cannot become a serious AFC team by asking Maye merely to avoid errors. His ceiling is the reason their offense can stress defenses. The challenge is learning to keep the aggression without turning every difficult snap into a crisis. Buffalo was the first game this season where both sides of that equation appeared at once: the volatility was still there, but so was the playmaking that made Maye an MVP-level quarterback a year ago.

New England kept scoring even while the mistakes kept coming

Romeo Doubs catching a pass for New England

The Patriots’ first drive was a useful clue that this would not look like the first three weeks. Maye capped a 12-play, 97-yard march with a 14-yard touchdown to Romeo Doubs, giving New England an early lead and forcing Buffalo to chase rather than dictate.

Doubs became the red-zone answer again in the third quarter, catching a two-yard touchdown that put New England back in front 21-17. Between those scores, Stevenson finished another drive from one yard out. The production was not built on one explosive play; it came from sustaining possessions long enough to make Buffalo defend the full field.

That is important for an offense playing without A.J. Brown and later losing Mack Hollins to a calf injury. The Patriots need the supporting cast to make Maye’s job easier, not merely wait for the quarterback to improvise. Doubs finished with six catches, 58 yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Henry added five catches for 62 yards. The numbers are modest, but the distribution gave New England enough answers to keep the game alive.

There is still cleanup required. The late first-half turnover gifted Buffalo a field goal, and New England repeatedly made the margin thinner than it needed to be. But unlike the previous losses, those mistakes did not become the entire story.

Efton Chism turned one opportunity into the play of the game

Buffalo appeared to have taken control when Josh Allen found Keon Coleman for a 34-yard touchdown with 4:27 remaining. The Bills led 26-21, New England needed a touchdown, and the Patriots were operating without their most established receiving options.

That is where Efton Chism III changed the game. The former undrafted free agent first climbed for a 19-yard reception on the winning drive, then produced the defining play on third-and-five. Maye gave him a chance down the right side, and Chism secured the 23-yard touchdown with one hand while fighting through coverage. Maye then found Stevenson for the two-point conversion.

The catch matters beyond the highlight. Chism entered the afternoon as a depth receiver whose role grew because Hollins left with a calf problem. In a game where New England needed someone outside the obvious names to win a matchup, he did it twice on the most important possession.

That kind of contribution is how an offense survives injuries. It also changes how defenses can treat Maye late in games. If the quarterback trusts a young receiver to win isolated coverage on third down, the Patriots have another answer when opponents devote resources to the established targets.

Craig Woodson’s interception made the upset mean something

Chism’s touchdown created the lead, but Buffalo still had time. With the ball at its own 40 and Josh Allen needing only a field goal to extend the game, the Bills had exactly the situation in which elite quarterbacks usually punish an opponent for celebrating too early.

Instead, Craig Woodson ended it. Allen escaped pressure and tried to attack downfield, but the pass was underthrown and Woodson intercepted it at the New England 19. The Patriots could kneel out the clock and leave Buffalo with a win that had looked unlikely for most of the week.

The play also changed the meaning of the standings. Buffalo is still 3-1 and remains the team New England has to catch, but the Patriots are 2-2 rather than 1-3. More importantly, they have now beaten the division leader in its own building and prevented the first month from turning into an immediate chase from multiple games back.

Buffalo had productive moments — Coleman finished with 116 receiving yards, Allen set the franchise record for touchdowns from scrimmage, and the Bills took the late lead. New England still found the final two answers. For a Patriots team that spent September giving games away with turnovers and stalled offense, finishing a close divisional game may be the most valuable part of the result.

One road win does not erase the turnover problem, and it does not make New England the favorite in the division. Buffalo is still 3-1, Josh Allen is still the standard every AFC East challenger has to deal with, and the Patriots still have offensive injuries and execution problems to solve.

But the Patriots needed evidence that their 2025 run was not already becoming a memory. Maye gave them that evidence in the hardest possible way: after mistakes, on the road, against the division leader, with the game in his hands. At 2-2, New England is not fixed. It is relevant again — and after the first three weeks, that is a meaningful change.
