Klopp’s Germany Look Better — but Five Points From Four Games Is the Problem

GOATIFY

Jürgen Klopp’s first Germany window produced a strange split-screen. The results say one win from four Nations League matches, five points from twelve and third place in Group A2. The football, at least in stretches, says something more encouraging: Germany are pressing with more aggression, playing faster and giving a new generation real responsibility.

That tension is the story of Klopp’s opening month. A 2-0 win over Serbia showed what the rebuild can look like when the press and movement connect. A home defeat to Greece, draws with the Netherlands and Greece, and a goalless night in Thessaloniki showed how far the execution still has to travel. Germany are not being asked to choose between patience and results forever. They are being asked to prove quickly that the promising parts can become repeatable before November turns the table into a real problem.

Germany look more like a Klopp team — the table still does not care

The table is the uncomfortable part of Germany’s start. Greece and the Netherlands have eight points, while Germany sit on five after four matches. That makes the November trip to Serbia and home game against the Dutch more than another development window. They are the fixtures where encouraging patterns need to become points.

Klopp has not hidden from the gap between performance and outcome. Germany’s first half in Thessaloniki gave him reasons to be positive: movement was sharper, the positioning looked more coordinated and the team defended collectively with the kind of front-foot intent associated with his best club sides. But a strong half does not change a 0-0 scoreline. Germany still need cleaner final actions and more consistent control after the initial press.

The encouraging detail is that the identity is visible already. Germany have looked more aggressive than in recent years, and that matters after a third consecutive early World Cup exit. The warning is equally clear: international football gives coaches very little time to turn an identity into habits. If the attack keeps producing promising phases without goals, the table will eventually make the tactical progress irrelevant.

The 44-player experiment gave Klopp information — now he needs hierarchy

Klopp’s boldest decision was not a formation change. It was the scale of the audition. He selected 44 players across two separate 22-man groups and brought 16 newcomers into the senior picture. That approach traded continuity for information, but it also gave Germany a fast look at players who might matter well beyond this Nations League campaign.

Philipp Treu and Derry Scherhant were among the newcomers who made positive impressions, while Tom Bischof’s goal against Serbia and his midfield work added another young option. The 2-0 Serbia win was especially useful because it showed that rotation did not have to mean surrendering intensity. Germany could change personnel and still press, move and attack with purpose.

The next phase should be narrower. Klopp has now seen a much larger pool under competitive pressure than most national-team coaches could evaluate in months. November offers a chance to turn that information into hierarchy: identify the combinations that make the press stable, decide which young players are ready for decisive minutes and give the strongest partnerships enough repetition to develop. Experimentation created possibilities. Selection now has to create a team.

November is where the rebuild starts getting judged on wins

Jürgen Klopp coaching Germany from the touchline

Germany’s recent history makes the rebuild unusually urgent. The four-time world champions went out in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, then suffered another early exit in 2026. Klopp inherited a team that did not simply need a new coach; it needed evidence that its international level was moving upward again.

That is why his optimism after Greece is understandable without being a free pass. A more aggressive Germany, a deeper player pool and a clearer collective defensive idea are genuine gains. They also need to coexist with qualification pressure. Top-two positioning in the Nations League will not wait for the project to mature on a club timetable.

Serbia away on November 13 and the Netherlands three days later should therefore be treated as the first real checkpoint of the Klopp era. Germany do not need to look finished. They do need to show that the lessons of this four-game experiment have produced a more settled side capable of converting territorial control and pressing into goals, leads and wins.

Klopp’s first four matches have not delivered the instant bounce that surrounded his appointment, but they have produced something more useful than empty optimism: a visible direction and a much clearer map of the squad. The question now is whether Germany can compress the next stage of the rebuild.

Five points from four games leaves no room to confuse process with achievement. If the aggression, young talent and improved movement survive while the finishing and game management catch up, November can make this opening window look like necessary experimentation. If the results stay flat, Germany’s rebuild will stop being judged on promise and start being judged on the table.
