Max Strus’ Clippers Debut Lasted Five Minutes — Now LA’s Wing Depth Is Already Being Tested

GOATIFY

Max Strus’ first Clippers preseason appearance lasted only a few minutes before he left the game, turning a routine October opener into an immediate rotation question for Los Angeles. The team has not announced a return timetable, so the useful focus is what the uncertainty does to a roster that was already trying to integrate several new pieces.

Strus was acquired to be a low-maintenance connector: shoot, move, make quick decisions and fit beside higher-usage creators. With Brandon Ingram also unavailable at the start of the season, the Clippers now have an early chance to find out whether their rebuilt depth can reproduce those functions by committee.

Los Angeles used the preseason opener to test a rebuilt rotation around Darius Garland. Strus was expected to supply movement shooting, quick decisions and spacing beside the new creators, making his first live minutes useful even before the regular season begins.

The Clippers can now use the next practices to test alternate wing groups. Bigger forwards can absorb minutes, younger guards can get extra possessions, and Garland can work with several combinations to identify which units preserve enough shooting and passing to keep the offense balanced.

This is bigger than one preseason absence

Strus matters because his role is unusually portable. The Clippers described him as a shooter with enough feel to handle, pass and compete defensively, which means he does not need a high-usage role to affect possessions. He can space away from Garland, sprint through exchanges or attack a closeout after the defense has already shifted.

NBA.com’s Clippers season preview identified Strus as a potential breakout piece for the same reason. His outside shooting can create cleaner lanes for the primary creators without forcing Los Angeles to redesign the offense around him. That kind of connector becomes more valuable on a roster with so many new pieces because it reduces the number of possessions that require perfect chemistry.

Brandon Ingram is also unavailable at the start of the season, so the wing rotation was already being stretched before the preseason opener. That does not mean one player has to reproduce everything Strus provides. It means the Clippers need to divide the job intelligently: one player can supply size, another shooting, another secondary creation.

The broader roster question is whether Los Angeles has enough overlap in those skills. If it does, Tyronn Lue can keep the same offensive principles while changing personnel. If it does not, the team may have to simplify lineups until the intended rotation is available together.

Hachimura and Wagler already showed the next-man-up plan

The Clippers did get a useful glimpse of the alternatives. Rui Hachimura scored 21 points in the first half and looked comfortable attacking within the new group, while Garland added 15 points and six assists in limited minutes. Los Angeles also won 104-101, giving Lue positive film to study even with the rotation changing early.

The most interesting depth answer may be Keaton Wagler. The No. 5 pick scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and hit the go-ahead step-back jumper late. A rookie should not automatically inherit a veteran wing’s full job, but preseason is exactly when coaches learn which young players can survive larger responsibilities sooner than expected.

That creates a clean short-term hierarchy. Hachimura can absorb more forward minutes and provide direct scoring. Garland remains the organizer who can create advantages for whichever wings share the floor with him. Wagler can earn extra reps as a shooter and secondary creator without the Clippers pretending he is already a finished product.

Other veterans give Lue more ways to adjust by matchup, but the key is not finding one perfect replacement. It is preserving enough shooting, ball movement and defensive size across five-man groups. The opener suggested Los Angeles has several workable combinations, which is exactly what a new roster needs when its first-choice rotation cannot simply be copied from one night to the next.

Preseason results are disposable; rotation information is not. The Clippers left Hawaii with a win and several encouraging performances, especially from Hachimura, Garland and Wagler. That gives Lue options while the preferred wing group remains unsettled.

The next step is simple: keep testing combinations and avoid asking one player to imitate Strus possession for possession. If Los Angeles can preserve shooting, passing and size across its lineups, the new roster can keep developing instead of waiting for one ideal five-man unit.
