Khalil Mack with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2026

Khalil Mack Trade Buzz Is Real — and the Chargers Have a Deadline Decision

GOATIFY

The Los Angeles Chargers are only four games into the season, but an 0-4 start has already pushed one uncomfortable question to the front of their November 10 trade-deadline planning: should they move Khalil Mack while a contender can still use him?

Mack returned to Los Angeles on a one-year, $18 million deal because the Chargers still looked capable of giving the 35-year-old another run at a Super Bowl. The standings have changed that calculation quickly. He remains productive, but an expiring veteran on a winless team is exactly the kind of asset that can become more valuable to somebody else than to the club currently paying him.

Why Mack Suddenly Looks Like a Real Trade Chip

The logic begins with the contract and the calendar. Mack chose to play a 13th NFL season and returned to the Chargers after considering retirement, accepting a one-year deal that kept him in a familiar defense. That made sense for a team expecting to contend. At 0-4, the same deal now makes him unusually movable: there is no long-term commitment for an acquiring team, and every week that passes reduces the remaining cash attached to the season.

The football case is just as important. Mack is not being discussed merely because of his name. He still has enough burst, power and run-defense value to help a playoff defense. Current Chicago reporting credits him with three sacks and 14 pressures through four games, with his run defense continuing to grade as a strength. That profile matters because deadline buyers rarely need a star to play 70 snaps. They need a veteran who can win a handful of high-leverage downs in January.

Los Angeles also has to separate sentiment from roster value. Keeping Mack through a lost season could mean receiving nothing more than whatever compensatory-pick formula eventually produces after free agency. Trading him now could create immediate draft capital and open snaps for younger defenders. The catch is decisive: Mack has a full no-trade clause. The Chargers cannot simply auction him to the highest bidder. Any deal has to send him somewhere he actually wants to go.

Chicago Is the Obvious Reunion — But Not the Only Fit

Chicago is the destination that writes itself. Mack spent four seasons with the Bears after their blockbuster 2018 trade with the Raiders, became the face of an elite defense and produced some of the best football of his career there. The current Bears are 3-1 and have played well enough defensively that this would not be a desperation move. That is precisely why it could work.

Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo already give Chicago edge production. Adding Mack would let the Bears rotate three credible rushers instead of asking one veteran to rescue the front. In a postseason game, that depth can be the difference between getting home with four and having to manufacture pressure with blitzes. A reunion would also be cheaper than the original Mack era: Chicago would inherit only the remaining portion of his 2026 compensation, and his age should keep the draft price far below the two-first-round-pick package that brought him to the Bears eight years ago.

San Francisco presents a different argument. The 49ers have an offense capable of supporting a playoff run, but injuries have stressed the edge group. Nick Bosa has already missed time, while Mykel Williams is still working back from last season's ACL tear. Mack would not need to become the permanent centerpiece. He could stabilize the position while the roster gets healthier and then become another experienced postseason pass rusher.

Jacksonville Shows Why Deadline Buyers Think Differently

Jacksonville is the more interesting fit because it is not trying to patch an obvious hole. The Jaguars already have Travon Walker and Joshua Hines-Allen. Adding Mack would be a luxury move built around the idea that playoff defenses can never have too many players capable of winning one-on-one.

That kind of move can create tactical value beyond Mack's own sack total. A third edge threat lets a coordinator move Walker inside on selected passing downs, protect players from excessive snap counts and attack protections with fresh rushers late in games. It is the same reason contenders routinely spend deadline capital on defensive linemen even when the depth chart already looks respectable.

For the Chargers, the best trade partner is therefore not necessarily the team with the biggest need. It is the contender that Mack approves and that values a short-term edge upgrade enough to beat the compensatory value Los Angeles might otherwise receive. A mid-round pick would not look glamorous, but for an 0-4 team it could be better roster management than holding a 35-year-old veteran through December simply because he remains one of the defense's best-known players.

The next month gives Los Angeles time to see whether the season can be salvaged. But the deadline arrives November 10, and the leverage is unlikely to improve if the losses continue. Mack returned for another shot at meaningful football. If the Chargers cannot offer that, helping him find it elsewhere may be the rare deadline decision that serves both the player and the franchise.

Mack does not need to be the player who terrorized offenses in Chicago in 2018 to change a contender's defense in 2026. He only needs to remain what he is now: a proven edge defender who can still rush, set the edge and handle pressure snaps. The Chargers' start has made that skill set more useful on the trade market than it looked a month ago.

There is no urgency to accept the first offer, and Los Angeles should not trade Mack merely to signal a reset. The decision should be value-driven. If the Chargers recover before the deadline, keeping him for a late push remains defensible. If they are still buried in the AFC, however, declining useful draft capital would mean spending the final months of an expiring contract on a season with little competitive upside. That is why this rumor has moved beyond ordinary October speculation.
