Chacarra Played 25 Holes, Won in India — and Took No. 1 From Reed

Sunday at Delhi Golf Club was supposed to be a test of endurance. For Eugenio Chacarra, it became the day that changed the shape of the entire European golf season. The Spaniard had to complete seven holes of his weather-delayed third round and then play a full final round. He emerged from that 25-hole marathon with the DP World India Championship trophy, a two-stroke victory and first place in the Race to Dubai.

His closing 70 left him at 21-under-par 267, two ahead of New Zealand's Daniel Hillier. The score tells only part of the story: Chacarra began the final round five clear, saw his cushion squeezed by a late challenge and still closed without the kind of costly mistake that could have reopened the title race. Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy, the two major champions who had arrived as his biggest season-long rivals, finished far behind. With three events remaining, golf's November finale suddenly has a new front-runner.

A 25-hole Sunday made Chacarra's third win his toughest closing test

The win was constructed over two very different rounds that effectively ran into each other. Storms had removed hours of play on Thursday, and darkness kept interrupting the schedule thereafter. When Sunday began, Chacarra still had seven holes left in round three. He did not merely protect the lead he had built on Saturday. He attacked it, completing a nine-under 63 that turned a two-shot advantage into a five-shot margin before the last 18 holes even began.

That 63 was the decisive scoring burst. Chacarra's four rounds of 67, 67, 63 and 70 add up to 267. On a tight, tree-lined layout where a small miss can force a sideways recovery, the Saturday-to-Sunday acceleration mattered more than one spectacular drive. He gave himself room to manage the final round rather than chase another record score. The first and third holes then offered early birdies, briefly stretching the gap to six and forcing the chasing group to take greater risks.

Yet a five-shot lead at the start of a final round is not the same as a five-shot lead on the 18th tee. Chacarra bogeyed the sixth, had to save pars around the turn and needed another birdie at 11 to restore momentum. His scoring became less explosive as the finish approached. That was not necessarily a weakness: it was a response to the situation. With the title available through controlled golf, aggressive approaches into the wrong parts of Delhi's greens would have offered his rivals exactly the opening they needed.

The most revealing moment came at the 16th. After finding trouble from the tee, Chacarra recovered to make par and kept the chasing pack at arm's length. He then made pars at 17 and 18. The closing stretch was about execution rather than theatre. A player who had spent the morning manufacturing birdies spent the afternoon refusing to give them back. That change of gear is why the long Sunday ended with a trophy instead of a playoff.

Hillier made the finish uncomfortable — but the two-shot margin held

Daniel Hillier was the golfer who made the leaderboard look less settled than Chacarra's early lead suggested. The New Zealander closed with a 67 and finished at 19 under, two behind the winner. His birdie at the last brought the gap down to two while Chacarra still had three holes to negotiate. A six-shot cushion had become a margin that could disappear with one bad swing and one strong finish.

Hillier's challenge also changed the calculation for the leader. The usual instinct when a rival charges is to answer with another birdie. But on a course that rewards position and punishes the wrong angle into a green, trying to force a shot can create more danger than it solves. Chacarra's recovery at 16 was therefore more valuable than an unnecessary attack on a tucked flag. It preserved a two-shot lead when a bogey would have transformed the last two holes into a very different contest.

Behind Hillier, Spain's Angel Hidalgo and Poland's Adrian Meronk shared third at 15 under. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood finished tied fifth at 13 under after a final-round 68. Robert MacIntyre and Tom McKibbin were among those at 12 under inside the top ten. The field had plenty of players capable of going low; what it lacked by Sunday afternoon was enough time to undo Chacarra's third-round advantage.

There is an important distinction between a runaway and a well-managed lead. A runaway means the field never seriously applies pressure. Chacarra was pressured, particularly as Hillier closed. But he had already banked his biggest score and avoided the double bogey that would have made the closing stretch chaotic. The title was won with a 63, defended with a 70 and protected by the discipline to accept pars when pars were sufficient.

Reed's seven-month hold on No. 1 is over with three events left

The biggest consequence of Chacarra's victory is visible in the season-long standings. His total rose to 4,092.89 Race to Dubai points, putting him ahead of Patrick Reed for the first time in seven months. Reed had led since February and had given himself a strong foundation with victories at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and Qatar Masters. In Delhi, however, he was playing catch-up almost from the beginning.

Reed salvaged a three-under 69 on Sunday but finished tied 23rd at eight under for the tournament. That was a respectable final round in isolation, not the result required to keep a fast-rising rival behind him. The gap between a top-25 finish and a victory is particularly expensive when the season's leading contenders are separated by a relatively small number of points. Chacarra did not merely move closer: he replaced Reed at the top.

His position is striking because the season has featured both consistency and bursts of winning. June brought consecutive titles at the KLM Open and the Italian Open. More recently, Chacarra finished third at the French Open and tied second at the Open de España before winning in India. That is a sequence of results suggesting sustained form rather than a single hot putting week. The Delhi victory was his third tour win of 2026 and fourth overall.

Three tournaments remain: the Genesis Championship in South Korea, the Abu Dhabi Championship from November 5 and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai the following week. The final two are the high-stakes play-off stretch, when established champions are especially dangerous. Reed remains second, with Rory McIlroy third; Casey Jarvis and Aaron Rai complete the top five. Chacarra now controls the narrative but not the mathematics. One missed cut or one rival's victory can still turn the standings again.

McIlroy's 42nd place and a Ryder Cup ambition sharpen the next chapter

Rory McIlroy competing at Delhi Golf Club in October 2026

Rory McIlroy's week moved in the opposite direction. He had been within range early in the weather-disrupted event, but his third round ended at even-par 72 and his closing 74 left him tied 42nd at four under, 17 shots behind Chacarra. The final round briefly promised a response with a birdie at the first. A double bogey at three and another dropped shot at four instead erased the early momentum, and he never put together the run needed to rescue a meaningful finish.

McIlroy's situation is not hopeless. He remains third in the Race to Dubai and has the experience of finishing European No. 1 repeatedly, including four consecutive titles. He is pursuing an eighth season crown, which would match Colin Montgomerie's record. But he plans to skip the Genesis Championship and return for the Middle East events. That leaves fewer opportunities to make up ground while Chacarra and Reed can continue collecting points.

For Chacarra, the significance extends beyond a trophy and the Harry Vardon Trophy race. The 26-year-old wants a place on Europe's 2027 Ryder Cup team under captain Luke Donald, preferably through automatic qualification rather than a captain's selection. A three-win season, a place atop the tour standings and repeated contention against established names are compelling arguments for a player trying to become a fixture in elite European golf.

There is a historical prize as well. If he finishes No. 1, Chacarra would join Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm among Spanish winners of the European tour's season-long crown. Those comparisons are not declarations that he has matched their careers. They show the scale of the opportunity now available. After a career reset that included leaving LIV Golf and earning tour status through his 2025 Hero Indian Open win, Chacarra is no longer just trying to establish that he belongs. He is trying to finish the season ahead of everyone.

India delivered a result with consequences well beyond Delhi. Chacarra beat Hillier by two, moved past Reed in the Race to Dubai and forced McIlroy to chase from third. His 25-hole Sunday required both aggressive scoring and late restraint, a combination that makes his lead feel earned rather than accidental.

The next three events will decide whether this becomes the defining season of his career or the start of another dramatic standings reversal. For now, the clearest fact is simple: Europe's season-long race has a new leader, and he reached the top by winning when the schedule, the course and the chasing pack all demanded different answers.
