Wembanyama Went 1-for-13 — Shai and McCain Made the Spurs Pay

San Antonio spent the summer looking like the team Oklahoma City would have to beat to reclaim the Western Conference. On opening night, the Thunder delivered a reminder that a playoff series and a single October game are different problems. Oklahoma City won 116–104 on the Spurs' floor after leading by as many as 26, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 32 and a deep supporting cast repeatedly interrupting San Antonio's attempted comeback.

The headline number belonged to the player on the losing side. Victor Wembanyama finished 1-for-13 from the field, making his only basket on a lob dunk at the end of the third quarter. He still collected 13 rebounds, blocked six shots and reached 12 points through his work at the foul line, but the contrast was startling: the star who had helped eliminate the Thunder in Game 7 of the 2026 West finals could barely find a clean shot in the rematch.

It would be foolish to declare the rivalry settled after 48 minutes. The more useful question is how Oklahoma City created such an uncomfortable night for Wembanyama, and why San Antonio's spirited second-half response could not undo the first-half damage.

Wembanyama's 1-for-13 night was a team defensive achievement

Wembanyama did not simply have a cold shooting quarter and then recover. He missed his first 12 field-goal attempts, went 0-for-7 before halftime and needed a perfectly timed De'Aaron Fox lob at the third-quarter buzzer to register his only make. That matters because his normal offensive menu is unusually broad: he can catch high, shoot over defenders, attack from the perimeter and finish above a conventional center. Oklahoma City reduced that menu without letting him dominate the game in other ways.

Chet Holmgren carried the most obvious assignment. At a similar height and with the mobility to contest away from the rim, he could meet Wembanyama without immediately forcing a smaller teammate to switch. The Thunder also had rookie Aday Mara, a 7-foot-3 center, available for a short but meaningful defensive stint. Mara blocked an alley-oop attempt and scored seven points in his NBA debut, giving Oklahoma City another large body who could contest above the cylinder rather than concede easy finishes.

There is an important distinction between forcing a bad shooting percentage and erasing a player's value. Wembanyama's 13 rebounds and six blocks kept San Antonio alive defensively, while his 10 made free throws supplied most of his scoring. Yet when a team's primary offensive fulcrum has only one basket, the rest of the lineup must manufacture quality attempts against a set defense. San Antonio could not do that consistently in the first half.

For the Thunder, the encouraging sign was not a magical one-on-one stopper. It was the combination of size, early positioning and help that made the Spurs choose a less comfortable option. Wembanyama described his own decision-making as uncertain after the game, an admission that fits the eye test: the defense won time before it won blocks. The sample is one night, but the tactical lesson is substantial.

A heated second quarter became the decisive separation

The game did not open as a rout. Oklahoma City led 34–28 after the first quarter, helped by making five of six shots from three-point range and shooting 59.1 percent overall. San Antonio was still close enough to trade possessions. The separation came in a second period when the Thunder won nearly every small battle and the Spurs' half-court offense lost its rhythm.

Three minutes into the quarter, De'Aaron Fox and Chet Holmgren became tangled while fighting for position. Fox threw Holmgren to the floor, drawing a flagrant-1 foul; players from both sides converged and four technical fouls followed. Wembanyama and Jaylin Williams were among those involved. It was a flashpoint in a matchup with genuine playoff history, but the scoreboard afterward mattered more than the confrontation itself.

Oklahoma City responded with a 9–0 run and later produced 13 unanswered points, stretching the margin to 59–33. By halftime the Thunder led 65–44. The quarter finished 31–16, and the Spurs had shot only 29.2 percent in the first half. Those numbers describe more than an emotional surge. They show what happens when one side converts clean perimeter looks while the other struggles to create even an ordinary two-point attempt.

The Thunder made 10 of their first 14 three-point attempts before the break, a blistering rate unlikely to repeat every night. Still, those shots were not detached from the defensive plan. Misses and disrupted San Antonio possessions let Oklahoma City attack before the Spurs were fully organized, while the threat of Gilgeous-Alexander driving toward the middle created space around the arc. The game was not won solely because of the scuffle or a hot streak; it was won because Oklahoma City used both to accelerate an already favorable pattern.

Shai controlled the response — McCain made the spacing hurt

Gilgeous-Alexander's 32 points were the steady center of Oklahoma City's attack. He scored 16 in the first half and continued to find useful possessions when the Spurs increased the pressure. The reigning two-time MVP did not need to turn the opener into a personal duel with Wembanyama. He needed to get the ball to his preferred spots, force defenders to commit and make the next pass or shot count.

Jared McCain supplied the sharpest punishment for those defensive choices. He scored 20 points, made six of eight three-point attempts and repeatedly appeared in the pockets of space created by San Antonio's attention to the ball. The timing was as important as the total. When the Spurs trimmed the lead, Oklahoma City could answer without requiring Gilgeous-Alexander to beat five defenders on every trip.

The combination of a star who bends a defense and a shooter who moves into the openings is simple in theory, difficult in practice and particularly valuable against a team with Wembanyama protecting the paint. If San Antonio sends extra help toward Shai, McCain can catch and fire. If it stays home on shooters, the lane becomes more negotiable for one of the league's best creators. That is why six made threes by a complementary guard can reshape the entire matchup.

Holmgren added 14 points and four blocks, while Jalen Williams scored 12. Their production was not spectacular by itself, but it helped keep Oklahoma City's possessions from collapsing into one-man offense. The Thunder have altered their guard rotation since last season, so McCain's efficiency offered a particularly useful early sign that the offense can still stretch opponents horizontally. One game cannot guarantee that shooting will hold; it can demonstrate that the spacing architecture remains dangerous.

The Spurs rallied twice, but the first-half hole was too deep

San Antonio did not disappear after the break. The Spurs opened the third quarter with a 23–9 surge, getting as close as 74–67 on a Stephon Castle layup. Castle finished with 24 points, Dylan Harper scored 18 and Fox contributed 14. The guards showed why the Spurs are dangerous even when their tallest star is having an exceptionally poor shooting night: they can push the pace, attack gaps and force a defense to defend more than one creator.

The comeback also exposed the limit of relying on bursts to repair a disastrous half. Oklahoma City stabilized, led 93–80 entering the fourth and held off another push. Castle's three-pointer with 4:18 remaining again made it a seven-point game, but San Antonio could not string together enough stops and efficient possessions to complete the climb. Gilgeous-Alexander and McCain combined for 25 second-half points, an answer to the Spurs' pressure rather than a passive defense of the lead.

There is a reasonable optimistic reading for San Antonio. Wembanyama will not usually miss 12 consecutive shots, and the team's young backcourt already showed it can create offense against elite resistance. There is also a harder reading: a lineup with several guards must avoid letting opponents dictate every early matchup, especially when its star is denied comfortable touches. The second-half energy was encouraging; the 21-point halftime deficit was a structural warning.

For both contenders, the opener should become useful film rather than a final verdict. Oklahoma City has evidence that its length and spacing can disrupt the Spurs' preferred rhythm. San Antonio has evidence that its guards can bring a seemingly lost game back into reach. The next test is whether the Spurs can establish those counters before the deficit becomes overwhelming, not merely after the Thunder have already built a cushion.

Oklahoma City earned its 116–104 victory by pairing a disciplined plan against Wembanyama with timely offense from Gilgeous-Alexander and McCain. The result reverses the immediate feeling of last spring's seven-game Western Conference finals, when San Antonio advanced and the Thunder went home. It does not erase that series or prove the matchup is solved.

What it does reveal is a practical early-season challenge for the Spurs: Wembanyama can still affect the game with defense and rebounding when his shot vanishes, but San Antonio needs reliable ways to free him and create efficient offense without him. The Thunder, meanwhile, have another way to win when a contender tries to make their MVP do everything. That is a meaningful opening-night statement — and a reason the next meeting will matter.
