Dylan Harper, Brandon Miller and 5 NBA Breakout Candidates Poised for a 2026-27 Leap

Sometimes an injury finally clears, a veteran leaves, or a new roster construction creates the touches that were missing a year earlier. Heading into 2026-27, five young players stand out because the opportunity and the talent are beginning to line up at the same time.
Dylan Harper has already shown he can handle bigger moments for San Antonio. Ajay Mitchell suddenly has a path to a major bench role in Oklahoma City. Brandon Miller is moving toward being Charlotte’s primary creator. Walker Kessler has landed beside Luka Doncic in Los Angeles, while Scoot Henderson is trying to turn a promising late-season run into a full-year breakthrough in Portland.
None of these leaps is guaranteed. Role, health and fit still matter. But each player enters the season with a clear reason to believe his next version can be meaningfully better than the last.
Dylan Harper Is Ready for More Than a Supporting Role in San Antonio
Harper’s first NBA season was productive without being built around volume. He averaged 22.6 minutes, started only four games and still produced 11.8 points and 3.9 assists per contest while finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting.
The strongest clue came late. Over his final 21 regular-season games, Harper shot 53.6 percent from three on 2.7 attempts per game, then became even more important during San Antonio’s Finals run. He averaged 18 points in roughly 31 minutes and finished as the team’s second-leading scorer on the sport’s biggest stage.
That is the kind of postseason sample that changes expectations. San Antonio can now use Harper alongside De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle rather than treating the backcourt as an either-or decision. Harper’s size allows him to defend across positions, attack secondary matchups and create without having to dominate every possession.
The biggest question is how much of the late shooting is sustainable. Harper does not need to remain above 50 percent from deep. He only needs defenders to respect the shot enough to open the driving lanes that make his combination of strength and playmaking so dangerous. If that happens, a jump into the mid-to-high teens as a scorer is realistic.
Ajay Mitchell Has a Clear Lane to Become Oklahoma City’s Sixth Man
Mitchell has spent two seasons fighting through one of the deepest rotations in basketball. He has played only 93 regular-season games, but the efficiency and composure have repeatedly suggested that the limited workload was more about Oklahoma City’s depth than his readiness.
That depth changed this summer. Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe are gone, creating real minutes and shot opportunities around the Thunder’s core. Mitchell already showed what can happen when the role expands: his minutes rose from 16.6 to 25.8 per game last season, while his scoring climbed from 6.5 to 13.6 points.
The postseason made the argument stronger. In 11 playoff games he averaged 15.1 points and became Oklahoma City’s second-leading scorer during that stretch. For a contender, having a bench guard who can keep pressure on the rim and create offense without needing the starters to carry every possession is enormously valuable.
The Thunder do not need Mitchell to become a star. They need him to turn a promising secondary role into a dependable one. If he becomes the first guard off the bench and maintains last season’s scoring efficiency, his national profile is going to change quickly.
Brandon Miller Finally Has the Usage to Match His Talent
Miller’s career numbers already look like those of a proven scorer. He has averaged 19 points per game while shooting 37.3 percent from three, and last season he improved to 38.3 percent on a heavy 8.2 attempts per game.
The difference in 2026-27 is responsibility. LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges are no longer occupying the same offensive ecosystem, leaving Miller with a path to far more creation. His usage was already 27.2 percent, so the next step is not simply taking more shots. It is becoming the player Charlotte trusts to organize possessions, draw the opponent’s best perimeter defender and make the right read when help arrives.
Kon Knueppel should help because he gives Charlotte another skilled perimeter player who can punish rotations. That can keep defenses from loading every possession toward Miller. The result could be a season where Miller’s scoring climbs without his efficiency collapsing.
This is also why he looks like a natural Most Improved Player candidate. The raw production should rise, but the more meaningful jump would be from good young scorer to genuine offensive centerpiece.
Walker Kessler Could Be the Big Man Luka Doncic Has Been Waiting For
Kessler’s previous season was mostly lost, with only five games played for Utah. The season before that, though, he averaged 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks, establishing himself as one of the league’s most productive rim protectors.
Now he gets to play with Doncic after arriving in Los Angeles through a sign-and-trade. That is a potentially perfect offensive partnership. Doncic has made a career out of manipulating pick-and-roll coverage, delaying defenders and delivering lobs to centers who occupy the space above the rim. Kessler does not need post touches to benefit. He needs to screen, dive hard and be available when the defense commits to the ball.
The Lakers also experimented with Kessler stretching the floor, and he attempted 1.6 threes per game in his five outings last season. Nobody should expect him to become a volume shooter overnight, but even a modest perimeter threat would make the fit more flexible.
The health question is the obvious one. If he stays on the floor, however, Kessler has a chance to produce career-best numbers simply because his role now connects directly to one of the NBA’s best creators.
Scoot Henderson’s Late Surge Has to Survive Portland’s Crowded Backcourt
Henderson’s 2025-26 season was largely wiped out before he returned for the final 29 games. Once he settled in, the progress became difficult to ignore. Over his last 21 regular-season games he made 40.1 percent of five three-point attempts per game, then shot 46.4 percent from deep in the playoffs and scored 31 points in Game 2.
His defensive impact also improved. Portland posted a 109 defensive rating with Henderson on the floor, 4.8 points better than when he sat. For a player whose early career was often framed almost entirely around offensive efficiency, that two-way growth matters.
The complication is the roster. Damian Lillard is back, Ja Morant was added and Jrue Holiday is also part of a crowded group. Henderson will not receive unlimited on-ball reps simply because he ended last season well. He has to prove he can be effective next to other creators, defend consistently and make quick decisions without controlling every possession.
That pressure could actually clarify his game. If the shooting holds, Henderson no longer needs the ball all the time to be useful. If the defense remains real, he can stay on the floor in more combinations. His breakout case is less about reaching a specific scoring average and more about becoming impossible for Portland to keep in a secondary role.
The five players on this list are at different stages, but the common thread is opportunity. Harper has earned more trust. Mitchell has minutes opening in front of him. Miller has the ball coming his way. Kessler has a dream playmaking partner. Henderson has momentum and a chance to prove his late-season growth was permanent. The talent was already there. The 2026-27 season may finally give each of them the circumstances to show it.
