Topuria Is Cleared — and His Gaethje Rivalry Just Got Personal

After months recovering from the facial damage he suffered against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, the former champion says he has been medically cleared to compete again. That alone would have been enough to restart speculation about his next fight. Instead, Topuria immediately turned the spotlight back toward Gaethje.
The two already had unfinished business after Gaethje handed Topuria the first loss of his professional career and took the lightweight championship. Now Topuria has added a new accusation about the gloves used in that fight, Gaethje has pushed back, and the possibility of a rematch suddenly feels much more personal than it did a week ago.
Topuria is cleared after a brutal recovery
Topuria's clearance is the biggest concrete development. The June fight left him with significant facial injuries, including orbital damage, and forced a long period away from competition. His return to training has been gradual, with his team previously indicating that a full fight camp would take time even after his face had healed.
Being medically cleared does not necessarily mean Topuria will fight immediately. A fighter can be allowed to compete while still choosing to spend additional months rebuilding timing, conditioning and confidence. But the clearance removes the biggest formal obstacle. The UFC can now discuss opponents and dates without waiting for another medical milestone.
That matters in a lightweight division where the title picture is moving. Gaethje remains champion, while other contenders are trying to force their way into the next title fight. Topuria's résumé still gives him enormous leverage, but he is no longer the unbeaten champion controlling the division from the front.
The damage from Gaethje changed the story
The context behind Topuria's comeback is impossible to separate from what happened at the White House. He entered that fight undefeated and heavily favored, but Gaethje turned the contest into the kind of punishing battle that has defined his career. Topuria had strong moments early. As the rounds passed, however, Gaethje's pressure and right hand began to change the fight.
By the championship rounds Topuria's face was badly swollen and his vision was compromised. His corner stopped the contest after the fourth round rather than sending him out for the fifth. The result gave Gaethje the undisputed lightweight title and left Topuria facing something entirely new: recovery from a defeat rather than preparation for another defense.
That is why this return is more interesting than a normal comeback. Topuria has already shown that he can knock out elite fighters and win titles in two divisions. What nobody has seen yet is how he responds after being physically broken down over multiple rounds. His next performance will answer a different set of questions.
The glove allegation makes the rivalry messier
Topuria's return message did more than announce his clearance. He also suggested there had been something improper about Gaethje's gloves in their June fight. That is an allegation, not an established fact, and it deserves to be treated that way.
Gaethje rejected the accusation and characterized it as an excuse. More importantly, reporting around the controversy has included the response of regulator Andy Foster, who said Gaethje's gloves and wraps were within the rules and had been inspected by multiple officials. There is currently no verified finding that Gaethje used illegal equipment.
That distinction matters. Rivalries often generate provocative claims, especially when a rematch is valuable, but the competitive result remains unchanged unless a regulator establishes otherwise. Gaethje won the fight, and Topuria's corner stopped it because of the accumulated damage.
Still, the accusation changes the tone. Before this week, a second fight could have been sold simply as a former champion trying to avenge his first defeat. Now there is genuine hostility layered on top. Gaethje has indicated he is open to fighting Topuria again, even while criticizing the way Topuria is trying to build the rematch.
A rematch is obvious — but it is not automatic
Topuria versus Gaethje II is easy to imagine because the first fight created a clean storyline and the rematch would be commercially huge. But the UFC does not have to make it next. Gaethje has already talked about taking time before deciding his future, and the lightweight contender queue could change quickly.
Topuria's own team has also preached patience. Medical clearance is one checkpoint; being ready for another five-round fight is another. A February 2027 return window has been discussed by his camp, which would give him a long recovery from the damage he absorbed in June.
If the UFC wants the rematch, waiting may actually make it bigger. Topuria can rebuild fully, Gaethje can recover from his own injuries, and the promotion can see which contender emerges as the strongest alternative. If Topuria takes another fight first, he would have the chance to prove that the Gaethje loss did not fundamentally change him.
Either route now carries more tension than it did before Topuria was cleared. The lightweight division has its former champion back in play, and he has made it clear that he has not moved on from the man who took his title.
