The Raptors are sending Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033 to Los Angeles. It is an unmistakable win-now bet on a 35-year-old star who just produced the highest-scoring season of his career.
The reunion is finally real
The trade was originally agreed during the summer but could not simply move forward while the NBA investigated the Clippers over salary-cap circumvention connected to Leonard. Toronto faced the possibility that any league action against Leonard could follow him to his new team, so the deal remained in limbo until the investigation was resolved.
The league eventually fined the Clippers $30 million, removed five future first-round picks and suspended owner Steve Ballmer for one year. Leonard received a $700,000 fine but was not suspended and his contract was not voided. With that uncertainty removed, Toronto and Los Angeles were able to complete the transaction.
For the Raptors, the basketball case is obvious. Leonard averaged a career-high 27.9 points last season, along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists across 65 games. He finished seventh in MVP voting and made the All-NBA Second Team. Toronto is not bringing him back merely because 2019 still means something to the city; it is bringing him back because he remains capable of being the best scorer in a high-level playoff series.
Toronto paid for a much higher playoff ceiling
The outgoing package shows how aggressively Toronto values the upgrade. Ingram averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 77 games last season. Dick is still a young former lottery pick. The draft haul reaches years into the future. Those are meaningful assets, not decorative pieces in a sentimental reunion.
What Toronto is buying is the kind of half-court shot creation that becomes disproportionately important in May and June. Leonard can punish switches, create from the mid-range, draw help without needing a complicated action and defend powerful wings at the other end. Scottie Barnes and the rest of Toronto’s core no longer have to carry every difficult possession by committee.
The Raptors were already moving upward before this trade. Adding Leonard converts that improvement into a far more urgent timeline. The question is no longer whether Toronto can become a stable playoff team. The question is whether this roster can survive the East and arrive in a conference-final or Finals series with Leonard healthy enough to control late possessions.
The 2019 shadow makes this different from a normal star trade
Leonard’s first Toronto run lasted only one season, but it permanently altered the franchise. He arrived in 2018 and left in 2019 after delivering the championship that had always felt just beyond Toronto’s reach. He won Finals MVP, then chose Los Angeles in free agency.
That history raises the emotional temperature of the return, but it also creates a useful benchmark. Toronto already knows exactly what an elite Leonard can do when the postseason slows down. The Raptors do not need him to recreate every part of his 2019 season; they need enough of the current version to turn difficult playoff possessions into efficient offense while giving Barnes another elite defender beside him.
Leonard returns as a seven-time All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection, two-time champion, two-time Finals MVP and two-time Defensive Player of the Year. The résumé is secure. This second Toronto chapter is about whether the remaining prime-level basketball can be concentrated into another championship window.
The entire bet still comes down to availability
The biggest risk remains the same one that has followed Leonard for years: availability. Last season’s 65 games were encouraging, and his scoring reached a career high, but Toronto is investing enough that a healthy April matters far more than any regular-season milestone.
The Raptors can manage his workload, build rest into the calendar and lean on their younger core during stretches when Leonard sits. They cannot guarantee four healthy playoff rounds. That uncertainty is the price attached to acquiring a player whose healthy version can still swing a series.
Los Angeles exits the Leonard era with Ingram, Dick and a substantial collection of draft capital at a moment when league sanctions have damaged its own future-pick inventory. Toronto moves in the opposite direction. It is spending youth and picks to make the present more dangerous.
