The Eagles Lost Four Straight — McKee Isn't Their Only Problem

GOATIFY

Philadelphia had a chance to turn an ugly afternoon into an unlikely escape. Tanner McKee had just found DeVonta Smith for a 19-yard touchdown, cutting Carolina's lead to five. The Eagles defense immediately forced a punt. With the ball back near midfield and more than nine minutes remaining, a team that had spent most of Sunday going backward suddenly had a plausible path to a comeback.

Instead, a botched snap, a deflected pass and a blocked punt returned the initiative to the Panthers. Bryce Young found Tommy Tremble for the decisive score, Carolina won 25-14, and the Eagles fell to 2-4 with four consecutive defeats. The result was not simply a verdict on a backup quarterback making his first start of the season. It exposed how little margin Philadelphia's offense has when the supporting structure is missing.

McKee Found One Opening, but the Eagles Could Not Sustain an Offense

McKee's box score was neither a disaster nor evidence that Philadelphia has found a ready-made replacement for Jalen Hurts. He completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Those numbers describe a quarterback who protected the ball reasonably well while struggling to make the offense efficient. They do not convey how often the Eagles put themselves in difficult down-and-distance situations or how few possessions ever threatened the Carolina defense.

Philadelphia punted on its first five possessions and finished with eight punts. Its first two drives combined for negative net yardage, and McKee took an 11-yard sack on the first offensive snap. The problem was not only whether he could make an NFL throw. It was whether the Eagles could consistently create a favorable throw for him. Short screens and swing passes repeatedly left the offense needing more than it could reliably gain on the next snap, while Carolina's pressure packages forced rushed decisions.

The touchdown to Smith showed why the Eagles can still believe McKee is capable of useful football. With Philadelphia trailing 19-7, he guided a 69-yard drive and delivered the 19-yard scoring pass that made it 19-14. Smith, back after missing two games with a hamstring injury, supplied a receiving threat that had been absent. Dallas Goedert also gave McKee a dependable target underneath, but a few productive connections were not enough to transform the full game plan.

The next opportunity was the more revealing sequence. After Philadelphia's defense forced a three-and-out, a mishandled snap cost 12 yards, the offense stalled, and the punt was blocked. The Eagles had earned a second chance and then lost control of it without Carolina needing a turnover. That distinction matters: McKee can improve with first-team repetitions, but the protection, timing and situational execution around him have to improve at the same time.

Thirty-Five Rushing Yards Left Philadelphia Without a Safety Net

Backup quarterbacks are usually asked to manage the game rather than carry it. That is an impossible assignment when the run game offers almost no resistance. Philadelphia finished with 35 rushing yards on 13 attempts, with Dameon Pierce accounting for every positive rushing yard. Pierce's two-yard touchdown before halftime gave the Eagles their first points, but that drive was an exception rather than the foundation of a sustainable attack.

Saquon Barkley missed his second straight game with a hamstring injury, while fellow running backs Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby were also unavailable. Carson Steele, another option in a depleted backfield, exited with a shoulder problem. The situation left the Eagles short of proven alternatives, and the offensive line was operating through its own changes. It is too simple to blame one replacement runner for the entire result when the blocking and play design also failed to create space.

The missing ground threat affected more than rushing statistics. Without dependable gains on early downs, McKee faced longer passing situations, giving Carolina's linebackers and defensive backs greater freedom to attack the pocket or sit on shorter routes. The Panthers did not need to respect a consistent run-pass balance. They could make Philadelphia prove it could drive the length of the field through a succession of modest completions, then wait for a negative play to end the possession.

That imbalance also made the Eagles predictable at precisely the wrong moments. A team can survive a low rushing total when explosive passes compensate, but Philadelphia gained only 222 total yards. Its offense produced one sustained scoring drive in each half, with too many possessions that gave the defense little rest. Barkley's eventual return could restore an important dimension, yet the lesson of this game goes beyond waiting for one star to get healthy: the Eagles need a workable baseline when their preferred personnel are unavailable.

Carolina Won the Hidden Battle: Field Position, Patience and Finishing

Carolina did not need a flawless passing performance to dictate the contest. Bryce Young completed 20 of 39 attempts for 281 yards and two touchdowns, both to tight end Tommy Tremble. Chuba Hubbard supplied 120 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown, giving the Panthers a dependable way to move the chains as Philadelphia's defense wore down. Carolina accumulated 399 yards to the Eagles' 222, a gap that captures the difference in offensive rhythm.

The Panthers led 10-7 at halftime and extended the advantage with Ryan Fitzgerald's 52-yard field goal after the break. The decisive offensive stretch came later: a 92-yard drive, prolonged by a critical fourth-down conversion, ended with Hubbard scoring from close range. Philadelphia had kept the game within reach for much of the afternoon, but that drive forced the Eagles to chase two scores with an offense that had struggled to produce one.

Carolina also had answers when the game briefly tightened. Smith's touchdown cut the margin to five, and Philadelphia's defense delivered a stop. But the Panthers' special teams then blocked the ensuing punt, and Young converted the shorter field into a 19-yard touchdown to Tremble. That sequence underlined the difference between the teams: Carolina could respond to adversity through several phases, while Philadelphia needed every part of its operation to be clean merely to stay competitive.

Jalen Coker's six catches for 97 yards added another layer to Carolina's attack, and Fitzgerald made field goals from 47 and 52 yards. The Panthers did not dominate every snap, but they turned opportunities into points. At 3-2, Carolina can view this as a road win built on a real running game, situational defense and late execution. For Philadelphia, it is an uncomfortable example of what complementary football looks like.

The Cowboys Game Is Now a Test of the Entire Eagles Operation

Four straight losses have changed the conversation around Philadelphia. A 2-0 start has become a 2-4 record, and the team is enduring its first four-game regular-season losing streak since 2020. It would be tempting to describe the entire slide as an injury crisis, particularly with Hurts on injured reserve because of a blood clot in his calf. His health must take priority over the standings, and his return cannot be treated as an immediate football fix.

Hurts is required to miss at least three more games after Sunday's defeat, so the coaching staff has to build a practical plan for McKee rather than assume the starter will rescue the offense next week. That means identifying which concepts he executes comfortably, improving protection calls, using Smith and Goedert to create attainable throws and finding a rushing approach that can produce something better than two or three yards at a time.

Nick Sirianni also has to look beyond the quarterback position. Penalties, a blocked punt, injuries to contributors and poor third-quarter production have repeatedly erased good defensive work. Philadelphia was held scoreless in the third quarter again on Sunday; the larger pattern matters because opponents can afford to play conservatively when they expect the Eagles to stall after halftime. Better play calling helps, but the problems demand cleaner technique and coordinated decisions across the roster.

Next comes a home game against Dallas on Monday, October 26. Philadelphia no longer has the cushion to absorb another afternoon of wasted drives. McKee does not have to imitate Hurts to keep the Eagles competitive. He needs a team capable of running the ball, staying ahead of the chains, protecting field position and finishing the chances its defense creates. The Cowboys game will show whether the Eagles can rebuild those basics quickly enough.

Carolina's 25-14 win will be remembered as another difficult day for Tanner McKee and a fourth consecutive loss for Philadelphia. The more useful diagnosis is broader. The Eagles briefly had a fourth-quarter comeback within reach, yet the offense and special teams could not protect that opening. The Panthers, by contrast, paired Bryce Young's passing with Hubbard's rushing and converted their late field position into points.

Philadelphia's path forward is not a single quarterback change or one injured star's return. It is restoring an offense that can generate manageable downs, making its special teams dependable and giving its defense enough support to finish games. Until those pieces work together, every close score will feel less like an opportunity and more like another warning.
