Topuria Is Ready — UFC Has Gaethje II and Pimblett Waiting

After months of uncertainty following his June loss to Justin Gaethje, the UFC now appears ready to put one of its biggest stars back into a major fight — and Dana White has publicly pointed to two routes that could reshape the lightweight title picture.
One is the clean sporting sequel: Topuria gets another shot at Gaethje, this time with the championship on the line. The other is the grudge match that has been sitting in the background for years: Topuria against Paddy Pimblett. White made it clear that both ideas interest him, which is important because it changes Topuria’s situation from a vague comeback story into a real matchmaking decision.
There is still no announced date and no signed opponent. But the key development is that Topuria is healthy enough to be discussed as an active option again, UFC officials are in contact with him, and the promotion still views him as an elite-level attraction rather than someone who needs a rebuilding fight.
Topuria is ready again — and UFC still sees him as a headliner
White’s message was straightforward: Topuria is ready to fight, and the UFC is ready to work with him. That matters after the former two-division champion’s momentum was interrupted by Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250. Topuria entered that fight as one of the most dangerous and marketable fighters on the roster, but a TKO defeat immediately changed the questions around him.
The loss did not apparently change the promotion’s view of his ceiling. White indicated that Topuria’s body of work still justifies putting him against opponents from the top tier. In practical terms, that means the UFC is not talking about a tune-up against someone outside the title picture. The names being floated are a reigning champion and one of the division’s biggest personalities.
There is one wrinkle: Topuria does not appear to be slotted into the immediate bout orders yet. UFC officials have spoken with him, but there is no firm timetable. That leaves the company with flexibility, especially because Gaethje has said he intends to give his body time to recover before returning next year.
That delay may actually help Topuria. If the champion is unavailable for a while, UFC can decide whether to wait for the rematch or use Topuria in a blockbuster non-title fight that keeps him active and preserves the possibility of another championship opportunity later.
Gaethje II is the sporting answer — Pimblett is the chaos answer
A second fight with Gaethje is the easiest matchup to justify on competitive grounds. Gaethje beat Topuria, owns the belt, and now has the leverage to decide when he wants to return. If Topuria believes the first result was correctable rather than definitive, there is an obvious story to sell: can one of the sport’s most explosive former champions fix what went wrong and reclaim his place at the top?
The Pimblett option is different. It does not need a belt to feel important. The rivalry already has history, personality and genuine friction, and both fighters are major attractions. Pimblett also carries fresh momentum after beating Benoit Saint-Denis in July. A Topuria-Pimblett main event could therefore function as a title eliminator, a stadium-level grudge fight or simply a massive standalone event while Gaethje recovers.
White said both matchups sound good to him, and that is probably the most revealing part of the update. The promotion is not treating Pimblett as a consolation prize if Gaethje is unavailable. It sees two different premium options.
From Topuria’s perspective, the choice is about risk and timing. Waiting for Gaethje offers the fastest possible route back to the championship, but it could mean a long layoff. Fighting Pimblett sooner would keep Topuria visible and give him a chance to rebuild momentum, but another loss would be disastrous. Even a win carries some risk if the performance is less convincing than expected.
That tension is exactly why the matchmaking is compelling. Topuria does not need an easy fight. He needs the right fight.
The first Gaethje fight gave Topuria a very specific problem to solve
Gaethje’s own explanation of the first fight makes the rematch even more interesting. He has argued that Topuria made mistakes before the fight as well as during it. In Gaethje’s view, Topuria was not properly prepared for an opponent who could survive his early pressure, stay dangerous and force him to keep solving problems deeper into the contest.
That is more than ordinary post-fight confidence. It identifies a tactical target for a rematch. Topuria is at his most frightening when he can take ground, establish his preferred range and make opponents react to his forward pressure. Gaethje’s team focused on the rhythm of that movement and on disrupting Topuria before he could settle into the sequences he wanted.
Gaethje described the core idea as timing Topuria’s feet and interrupting his movement. If Topuria remained predictable in when he advanced or retreated, Gaethje believed he could read those moments and break the pattern. Whether that analysis fully explains the first result or not, it gives Topuria’s camp a concrete question to answer if the sequel happens.
Can Topuria vary his movement, create different entries and avoid becoming readable over a longer fight? Can he stay disciplined if the early finish does not materialize? And can he manage the emotional weight of trying to avenge the first defeat without turning the rematch into a reckless chase?
Those questions are also why a Pimblett fight would not be a simple detour. Pimblett brings a different style, but he would still test Topuria’s ability to reset after defeat and handle the pressure that comes with a rivalry fight. The UFC can learn something meaningful about Topuria whichever direction it chooses.
For now, the most important change is that the waiting phase appears to be ending. Topuria is ready. The UFC is talking to him. Gaethje II and Pimblett are both openly on the table. Once the calendar becomes clearer, one of the biggest matchmaking decisions in the lightweight division could move very quickly.
