Rwanda Could Bring Formula 1 Back to Africa in 2030 — Here’s What Still Has to Happen

Formula 1’s long-running search for a return to Africa may finally have a front-runner. Rwanda has reportedly secured a path toward a 2030 Grand Prix, with plans for a permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport outside Kigali.

The important word is reportedly. Formula 1 and the FIA have not yet publicly confirmed a calendar agreement. But the latest reporting is more concrete than the familiar cycle of African-race interest: it identifies a target year, a location, a permanent-track concept and a design team, while placing Rwanda ahead of rival projects in South Africa.

Rwanda’s bid now has a location — but it still needs a Formula 1 circuit

Bugesera airport construction area outside Kigali

Rwanda’s proposal is fundamentally an infrastructure project. The country does not have an existing FIA Grade 1 circuit that can simply be upgraded and dropped onto the calendar. The reported plan is to build a new permanent venue near Bugesera International Airport, roughly 40 kilometres from Kigali, with WurzDesign — founded by former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz — involved in the design.

That location matters because the airport corridor is already one of Rwanda’s largest infrastructure bets. The new airport is under construction and is intended to expand the country’s international connectivity. A Grand Prix complex nearby would therefore sit inside a broader transport and tourism development rather than function as an isolated racetrack.

It also explains why 2030 is plausible rather than immediate. A purpose-built F1 venue needs financing, construction, safety certification, access roads, paddock and hospitality infrastructure, and an FIA Grade 1 licence. More than three years gives the project time, but it also creates multiple checkpoints at which a reported agreement still has to become a completed circuit and a confirmed calendar slot.

The race is really about ending Africa’s 37-year F1 absence

The 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami

The bigger significance is the continent, not only the host country. Formula 1 has not staged a World Championship Grand Prix in Africa since Alain Prost won at Kyalami in 1993. For years, executives and drivers — most prominently Lewis Hamilton — have argued that a global championship should return.

South Africa has remained the obvious historical candidate. Kyalami has pursued a comeback, while other South African proposals have also surfaced. Rwanda’s advantage is that its bid has moved from aspiration toward a defined new-build project. The country formally announced its bid when Kigali hosted the FIA General Assemblies in December 2024, giving the campaign a direct institutional connection to motorsport’s governing body.

None of that makes the race official today. The live calendar is crowded, promoters are competing for renewals, and a reported 2030 agreement still needs public confirmation from the championship. That distinction should not be treated as a technicality. F1 venue projects have often looked close before commercial or infrastructure realities changed.

Still, the latest development is the strongest sign yet that the question may have shifted from whether Formula 1 returns to Africa to which project can actually deliver. If Rwanda reaches the construction and approval milestones implied by the report, the sport’s 37-year African absence could end with a completely new circuit rather than a revival of Kyalami.

Rwanda has not secured a Grand Prix until Formula 1 says it has. But the reported 2030 plan has more substance than a simple expression of interest: a site, a permanent circuit, a design team and years of groundwork are now aligned around one bid.

The next decisive step is official confirmation. After that, the challenge becomes physical — turning the Bugesera plan into a Grade 1 venue capable of hosting the world championship. Africa has waited since 1993. Rwanda now appears closer than anyone else to ending that wait.
