Sean O’Malley Isn’t Ducking Payton Talbott — UFC 333 Will Decide If They Fight

GOATIFY

Sean O’Malley did not reject Payton Talbott’s callout. He rejected the story attached to it. After Talbott stopped Deiveson Figueiredo in the first round at UFC 332 and said O’Malley had been offered a fight with him for the White House card, O’Malley answered that he was never offered the matchup at all. The distinction matters because the bantamweight division is about to split into two very different paths for the former champion: another run at gold, or one of the most marketable contender fights the UFC can make.

O’Malley rejected the ducking story — not the Talbott fight

Talbott’s callout worked because it attached a simple accusation to an impressive performance. He had just overwhelmed Figueiredo in 2:09, giving him consecutive wins over former champions after also beating Henry Cejudo. Then he used the microphone to say O’Malley could not run forever.

O’Malley’s response was unusually specific. He said he was never offered Talbott for UFC Freedom 250 and argued that a fight involving him would not have been presented to Talbott without his side hearing about it. He even said there could have been miscommunication if Talbott genuinely believes otherwise, but his central point was clear: he does not accept the idea that he turned the fight down.

That turns the dispute into something more useful than a social-media argument. Neither man is actually saying the matchup is bad. Talbott wants it because O’Malley is the biggest recognizable name available outside the immediate title fight. O’Malley openly called it a fun stylistic matchup and acknowledged that Talbott’s public challenge keeps his own name in the conversation.

For the UFC, that is the ideal kind of friction. The fighters disagree about how they got here, but both are selling the same future fight. Talbott gets to frame himself as the younger contender chasing the established star. O’Malley gets to reject the “ducking” label without closing the door on a matchup that could become more valuable after one more major event.

UFC 333 is the fork in O’Malley’s road

Petr Yan in current UFC bantamweight title context

The reason O’Malley is not committing immediately is Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili 3 at UFC 333 on October 24. Yan holds the bantamweight title and the rivalry with Dvalishvili is tied 1-1 after Yan reclaimed the belt in their December 2025 rematch.

O’Malley’s history makes the result unusually important. He owns a split-decision win over Yan, so a Yan victory creates an obvious championship storyline: former champion versus current champion, with an old result that Yan would want to reverse. O’Malley has made no secret that he would prefer that route.

A Dvalishvili victory changes the calculation. O’Malley has already fought him twice and lost both meetings, making a third booking much harder to justify immediately. In that scenario, Talbott stops looking like a detour and starts looking like the cleanest high-profile fight available.

That is why O’Malley can be interested in Talbott without treating him as Plan A. He is waiting for a title picture that will resolve itself in less than three weeks. If Yan wins, O’Malley can argue for the championship opportunity. If Dvalishvili wins, the division needs a different way to sort the next wave of contenders, and O’Malley vs. Talbott suddenly does that job.

The timing also protects the UFC from forcing a decision too early. UFC 333 can determine whether O’Malley remains directly connected to the belt before matchmakers spend one of their most valuable non-title bantamweight pairings.

Talbott has made himself too credible to dismiss

Talbott has already done the most important part of building the fight: he made himself difficult to dismiss. Figueiredo is a former two-time flyweight champion, and Talbott did not merely edge him on points. He hurt him almost immediately, kept the pressure on and forced the stoppage in the opening round. His professional record moved to 12-1, and the win pushed him from prospect conversation into legitimate contender matchmaking.

O’Malley also understands why the pairing works. Talbott is tall for the division, rangy, confident at distance and willing to exchange. Those traits create a very different problem from the smaller former flyweights Talbott has recently beaten. O’Malley has spent years building his reputation around precision, timing and the ability to punish opponents who enter recklessly. A fight between them would ask whether Talbott can impose his athleticism and pressure on an opponent who is comfortable operating in the same long-range striking spaces.

There is also a promotional handoff happening. O’Malley remains one of the division’s biggest names, while Talbott is trying to turn highlight-reel wins into the kind of attention that follows a star rather than a prospect. Calling out O’Malley was therefore useful even before a contract exists. It forced the established name to discuss him and made the matchup part of the UFC 333 title conversation.

The best outcome for Talbott may actually be waiting. If Yan beats Dvalishvili and O’Malley gets a title opportunity, Talbott can keep climbing with another ranked opponent. If Dvalishvili wins and O’Malley needs a fresh matchup, Talbott has already positioned himself as the obvious answer.

O’Malley says he is not ducking Payton Talbott. The more important part is that he is no longer dismissing him.

For now, the argument is doing exactly what both fighters need. Talbott has converted a two-minute knockout into a conversation with one of the UFC’s most recognizable bantamweights, while O’Malley has kept both the title route and the Talbott route open. UFC 333 decides which one makes more sense. If Yan wins, O’Malley can chase gold. If Dvalishvili wins, the callout that started as an accusation may become the easiest big fight in the division to book.
