Snell Faced the Minimum in 2025 — Five Walks Are the Warning for Game 3

GOATIFY

One year ago, Blake Snell made Milwaukee look helpless. The Dodgers left-hander worked eight scoreless innings against the Brewers in the 2025 National League Championship Series, allowed one hit, struck out ten and did not issue a walk. Now the same opponent stands between Los Angeles and a much more uncomfortable October: the two-time defending champions enter Game 3 of the 2026 NLCS trailing 2-0, and their latest start from Snell was defined less by dominance than by five free passes.

That contrast is the story of Wednesday's matchup. Los Angeles spent heavily to assemble a rotation capable of winning a third consecutive World Series, but Tarik Skubal and Yoshinobu Yamamoto have combined for only 7⅔ innings across the first two games. Snell must supply both quality and length against a Milwaukee club that has already shown it can turn brief openings into decisive rallies. The stakes are larger than whether one famous pitcher rediscovers a signature performance: they concern how much of the Dodgers' supposed pitching advantage is real when every inning becomes urgent.

Two aces combined for 7⅔ innings — Snell inherits the rotation's debt

The Dodgers' rotation looked intimidating before the NLCS began. Skubal, a midseason addition and two-time American League Cy Young winner, joined Yamamoto, Snell and Tyler Glasnow to give Dave Roberts a succession of pitchers who would headline most other staffs. In theory, Los Angeles could control games without exposing the bullpen to extended work. In practice, the first two starters delivered just 7⅔ combined innings while Milwaukee won twice at home.

That shortfall changes what Game 3 demands from Snell. A solid four-inning outing with several strikeouts may look respectable on an individual line, but it would leave the same structural problem in place. Milwaukee has already demonstrated that it can manage pitching transitions and keep its offense in the game until the decisive swing. If Snell cannot work deep enough to shorten the relief bridge, Roberts will again have to make leverage decisions earlier than planned, with Game 4 arriving the following day.

There is a distinction between possessing four excellent starters and receiving four excellent starts. The former is a roster-building achievement; the latter is what wins a seven-game series. Los Angeles can still benefit from its depth if Snell stabilizes the rotation and Glasnow follows with a strong Game 4, but those outcomes cannot be assumed from reputation. The Brewers have already beaten the top of the order on paper.

Snell's assignment is therefore not simply to prevent an early deficit. He must restore the Dodgers' preferred rhythm: a starter handling the difficult middle innings, a bullpen entering with defined roles and an offense that does not have to chase the game from the first third onward. The difference between five and seven innings could matter almost as much as the difference between two and four runs allowed.

Five walks against Atlanta are a more useful warning than last October's highlight reel

Snell's October 2025 performance against Milwaukee was not merely good run prevention. It was an exhibition of command and control: eight shutout innings, ten strikeouts, one hit and no walks. He faced the minimum 24 batters through eight innings after the only runner was erased. That kind of outing is a powerful reference point, but it can also obscure the specific problem the 2026 version must solve.

In his lone postseason appearance this October, Snell issued five walks in 3⅔ innings against Atlanta. He held the Braves to one run, yet the number of free passes and the limited length prevented him from turning damage control into dominance. Roberts subsequently described the left-hander as too careful and inefficient. Those observations matter more than a generic demand for better stuff: Snell can miss bats and still make life difficult for his team if he spends too many pitches escaping counts that began in his favor.

The first adjustment is not a dramatic reinvention. It is attacking the strike zone early enough to put hitters on the defensive without simply offering predictable first-pitch fastballs. The second is trusting the defense behind him when the perfect swing-and-miss pitch is not available. The third is maintaining a manageable pitch count so that a strong opening three innings can become a six- or seven-inning start. Will Smith's game-calling and the battery's willingness to change sequences should be central to that plan.

Milwaukee's hitters do not need Snell to collapse to profit from his wildness. A walk extends an inning, forces another high-stress matchup and increases the chance that the Brewers' next line drive arrives with someone already on base. Los Angeles has seen how a single poorly defended or poorly executed sequence can transform a close game. Snell's best response would be boring by his own extraordinary standards: get ahead, avoid free traffic and force Milwaukee to earn every extra ninety feet.

Robert Gasser is not the easy opponent a desperate lineup needs

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Robert Gasser in his current team uniform

Game 3 is often described as a test of whether Snell can rescue the Dodgers, but that framing leaves out the pitcher trying to prevent the rescue. Milwaukee counters with Robert Gasser, a left-hander whose late-season progress has made him a credible postseason option rather than a placeholder behind the club's better-known arms. Entering the matchup, Gasser had gone 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA over his previous seven appearances, six of them starts, including the Division Series.

His path to this assignment has been unusually steep. Gasser opened the year in Triple-A, then seized an opportunity in late August when Dustin May was struck by a comebacker and had to leave almost immediately. His confidence and a productive sweeper helped turn an emergency appearance into a sustained run. For the Brewers, the significance is not that he has suddenly become a household name. It is that their pitching development pipeline has supplied another starter who can carry meaningful October innings.

That matters against a Dodgers lineup already struggling to string together productive at-bats. Milwaukee does not need Gasser to match a peak Snell performance pitch for pitch. A competitive outing that limits walks, creates weak contact and allows the bullpen to enter on schedule may be enough. The Brewers' relief corps retired all fifteen batters it faced in Game 2, illustrating how quickly a game can disappear once Milwaukee gets the matchup and score it wants.

There is also a tactical wrinkle in the lefty-lefty matchup. The Dodgers have moved Shohei Ohtani down to sixth in the batting order after his prolonged slump, while Milwaukee has adjusted its own lineup against Snell, including Andrew Vaughn in the designated-hitter spot. Both managers are seeking marginal advantages rather than trusting the standard order to solve everything. Gasser's task is to keep those adjustments from generating a long inning, particularly the first time through the heart of the Dodgers' lineup.

The 17% comeback math makes Glasnow's next start part of Snell's job

The Dodgers are not mathematically finished at 0-2, but history provides a sober baseline. Teams trailing two games to none in a best-of-seven postseason series have come back to win sixteen of ninety-five times, roughly seventeen percent. In the current 2-3-2 format, clubs losing the first two on the road have recovered eleven times in fifty-seven attempts, around nineteen percent. Those figures do not measure this exact Dodgers roster, but they explain why a home Game 3 cannot be treated as an ordinary adjustment period.

Snell can change the probabilities only by changing the series' immediate shape. A win on Wednesday creates a manageable 2-1 deficit and gives Glasnow the chance to level the series in Game 4. A loss would require Los Angeles to win four straight against a team that has already outplayed it twice. Roberts knows the difference: he was part of Boston's extraordinary 2004 comeback from 0-3 against the Yankees, a feat that remains singular in a seven-game MLB postseason series.

Glasnow's role is also why Snell's workload matters. If the Dodgers must use their best relievers for four or five innings in Game 3, the staff enters the next game with fewer clean choices. If Snell goes deep, Roberts can protect those arms and allow Glasnow to attack aggressively rather than pitching as the first stage of another improvised bullpen game. A rotation is a sequence, not four isolated names on a schedule.

Of course, even a near-perfect start will not win without run support. The Dodgers entered Game 3 just 2-for-26 with runners in scoring position this postseason, while several prominent hitters have been searching for timing and extra-base impact. Snell cannot manufacture that missing offense. What he can do is make a two-run lead feel meaningful and prevent Milwaukee from forcing Los Angeles to abandon its approach early. The next nine innings will not decide whether the Dodgers assembled an impressive roster; they will reveal whether that roster can still play its preferred game when the margin for error has almost vanished.

Snell does not need to reproduce the most famous outing of his Dodgers career to make Game 3 a turning point. He does need to pitch like someone who can control the strike zone, stay on the mound and stop Milwaukee from dictating every late-game decision. His five-walk appearance against Atlanta is the immediate warning; his eight scoreless innings against the Brewers a year earlier show the upper limit.

For Los Angeles, the test is practical rather than romantic. A longer Snell start, a cleaner first few trips through the lineup and just enough offense would give Glasnow a meaningful Game 4. Another abbreviated outing would make the Dodgers' remarkable rotation depth feel theoretical at precisely the moment it was built to matter most.
