Maxey Stole the Spotlight — Sixers Spoiled Knicks' Ring Night 106–100

The New York Knicks raised a championship banner. The Philadelphia 76ers left Madison Square Garden with the win. On October 20, Philadelphia beat the defending NBA champions 106–100, turning the most heavily anticipated opener in the Eastern Conference into a demonstration of how much its new roster can already do—and how much it still has to learn.

LeBron James and Jaylen Brown made their regular-season Sixers debuts, but Tyrese Maxey supplied the game-high 28 points. Brown changed the contest with consecutive late-third-quarter threes, while Joel Embiid found decisive defensive and playmaking contributions despite an uneven shooting night. The result was a first look at a team with more ways to win than simply waiting for its biggest names to dominate.

Maxey was the engine, even with two new superstars beside him

Maxey's 28 points mattered beyond the scoring lead. Philadelphia added a legendary organizer in James and an established two-way wing in Brown, yet its best stretches still depended on the guard who could break the first line of New York's defense without a complicated setup. Maxey can push after a rebound, force a defender to turn his hips, and make a rotating big man choose between protecting the rim and leaving a shooter. Those decisions are what give a crowded star lineup room to function.

The opening-night temptation was to judge how quickly James and Brown could take over. Instead, the Sixers looked more dangerous when the newcomers helped create advantages for the player who already knew the team's rhythms. Maxey's three-point play early in the fourth pushed Philadelphia ahead 87–78, an important answer after the third-quarter swing. His ability to attack before the Knicks had established their half-court matchups prevented New York from loading up on one obvious creator.

There is a strategic lesson here for coach Nick Nurse. James does not need to monopolize the ball to be influential, and Brown does not have to manufacture every possession from isolation. If Maxey keeps the first defender under pressure, the other stars can receive the ball with a step already gained. That is a much more scalable offense than alternating turns between famous names.

One game cannot establish a hierarchy for an entire season. It can, however, show that Philadelphia's existing star guard is not being squeezed out by its summer additions. Maxey looked like the connective force that can make those additions more effective.

Brown's 11–0 closing run turned the game

New York controlled enough of the first half to make its celebration feel like the start of another statement season. The Knicks led by ten on three occasions in the second quarter and carried a 58–54 advantage into halftime. Philadelphia was still learning how to space five important offensive pieces, and neither side was shooting with much consistency. Then Brown delivered the stretch that changed the scoreboard and the mood.

The Sixers closed the third quarter on an 11–0 run. Brown hit two three-pointers during that surge, including one at the buzzer, and Philadelphia entered the fourth ahead 83–76. Those possessions did not decide every minute of the game, but they forced New York to chase. Instead of calmly playing from in front on ring night, the champions suddenly needed consecutive stops against a roster capable of generating offense from several different positions.

Brown's debut line—19 points, eight rebounds and six assists—also matters because it was not a one-dimensional scoring cameo. His size and defensive activity gave Philadelphia a credible answer when New York tried to isolate a smaller matchup, while his passing helped the ball move away from the first point of attack. The closing burst was the highlight; the broader value was a wing who could contribute without requiring a high-volume shooting night.

Philadelphia traded for Brown in July after New York had swept it out of the previous postseason. That history made this opener a useful, if very early, comparison. Brown was brought in to provide an additional way to solve playoff-style defensive pressure. His first competitive test against the team that exposed Philadelphia's limitations produced an encouraging answer—without pretending a six-point October win settles a seven-game May series.

LeBron's first Sixers game showed why his passing matters more than a scoring chase

James began his record-extending 24th NBA season with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. For a player whose career has been defined by spectacular numbers, that line might appear restrained. In this version of Philadelphia, restraint can be a strength. The Sixers already have a fast scoring guard, a powerful scoring wing and an elite interior presence. They need James to identify the best advantage rather than insist on being the advantage every time.

The early chemistry with Brown offered a glimpse of that role. James found his new teammate for a first-quarter basket and later set up another finish; Brown returned the favor as their timing improved. Those exchanges are significant because defenses cannot simply decide to stop James's own drive. When he is a willing connector, an extra defender sent toward him creates a better possession for someone else.

At 41, the all-time leading scorer has chosen a final chapter built around championship ambition, not a demand to reproduce the usage of his prime. His two-year Philadelphia deal followed a summer in which the Sixers also reshaped the roster around Brown. The challenge is not whether James can still make a brilliant individual play. It is whether he can conserve enough energy over the regular season while giving the younger stars a better map of the floor.

The win does not erase the work ahead. Five prominent names still need a dependable closing rotation, clear spacing responsibilities and answers when opponents switch actions late. But Philadelphia's first night showed that James can influence the game without scoring 30, which may be more valuable for a long season than an opening-night highlight reel.

Embiid struggled to score, then made the plays that protected the lead

Embiid's 13 points and 11 rebounds do not resemble the overwhelming offensive nights associated with his MVP years. He was inefficient from the field, and former Sixer Andre Drummond gave New York a major lift on the glass. Yet the late possessions showed why Philadelphia does not need Embiid to win every individual scoring matchup to remain essential.

With the Knicks having cut the lead to 96–95, Embiid responded to a missed Brunson chance with a three-pointer. Later, with New York still threatening, he found rookie VJ Edgecombe for a dunk that stretched the margin. His six assists illustrated another route to influence: drawing attention in the middle, recognizing a cutter and trusting a teammate to finish. He also contributed rim protection when the Knicks tried to attack inside.

The center matchup was more complicated than a simple box-score comparison. Towns produced 19 points and 12 rebounds; Drummond added 12 and 14. Those numbers expose a genuine question about Philadelphia's defensive rebounding and frontcourt mobility against big lineups. Embiid will not have the legs to solve every possession alone, especially if the Sixers ask him to anchor the paint while four perimeter stars pursue aggressive matchups.

Still, the last minutes were revealing. On a night when the jumper did not flow, Embiid remained a decision-maker and a defensive presence. If the Sixers can survive his average offensive nights against a defending champion, they have a different kind of ceiling than a team that requires him to carry every scoring burden. Health and continuity will determine whether that possibility becomes a habit.

The Knicks got their rings, but their half-court offense could not finish the job

Jalen Brunson takes a jump shot for the New York Knicks against Philadelphia

The banner-raising ceremony was a deserved celebration of New York's first NBA championship since 1973. It was not a promise that the next season would start smoothly. The Knicks shot about 37 percent from the field and could not turn several promising leads into control of the game. Brunson finished with 21 points but made only six of 19 shots, a difficult line for the player who had been the focal point of so many championship comebacks.

New York was not outplayed from start to finish. Its ten-point first-half advantages and late rally showed how quickly the champions can change momentum. Towns' three cut the deficit to 96–95 with 4:37 remaining, and another reduced the margin to 100–98. The problem was converting that pressure into the next stop and the next clean possession. Philadelphia had an answer when New York needed the lead to change hands.

The roster still has proven solutions. Towns can punish smaller defenders, Brunson can create a late-clock jumper, and Drummond's rebounding gives coach Mike Brown an alternative physical look. But the Sixers' size on the wing and multiple ballhandlers made it harder to target a single weak defender or predict where the next attack would begin. New York will have to refine its spacing and transition defense as opponents arrive specifically prepared for the champions.

There is no October crisis in a six-point defeat. A championship is earned across months, and the Knicks have already proved they can survive difficult stretches. The useful warning from this game is narrower: the title does not supply points or stops. Every possession must still be won against opponents who spent the summer trying to catch up.

Philadelphia's 106–100 victory was not proof that its new collection of stars is already a finished contender. It was evidence that the pieces can complement one another: Maxey attacking, Brown swinging a quarter, James connecting possessions and Embiid delivering in moments when his scoring was not there.

The Sixers host Cleveland next, while the Knicks visit Boston. Those games will test whether Tuesday's chemistry survives different matchups. For now, the most important opening-night result was not that LeBron arrived in Philadelphia or that New York raised a banner. It was that the Sixers found a way to beat the champions without asking any single player to carry the entire story.
