Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate after clinching the NL West in September 2026

Dodgers Clinched the West — Now October Depends on Getting Healthy

GOATIFY

The Los Angeles Dodgers have checked off the first major box of their title defense. An 8-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds secured a fifth consecutive NL West crown, a 13th division title in 14 seasons and a 14th straight postseason appearance. For almost any franchise, that would be the defining achievement of the year. For these Dodgers, it is the point where the real questions begin.

Los Angeles is trying to win a third consecutive World Series, something no MLB team has done since the New York Yankees completed their three-peat in 2000. The roster has enough star power to make that ambition credible, but the final stretch of the regular season is less about proving the Dodgers belong in October and more about getting the right version of the team there.

The division is settled. Health, pitching availability and National League seeding are not.

The NL West clinch extends one of baseball's longest runs

Los Angeles entered Thursday already guaranteed a postseason place, then removed the last bit of suspense from the division race. Kyle Tucker drove the offense in Cincinnati, collecting four hits, including a home run and two doubles, while Max Muncy added a two-run double. The Dodgers improved to 93-60 and officially reclaimed the West.

The larger number is 14. Los Angeles has now reached the postseason in 14 consecutive seasons, matching the Atlanta Braves' 1991-2005 run. Within that stretch, the Dodgers have won the NL West 13 times. The only interruption came in 2021, when San Francisco won the division despite Los Angeles finishing with 106 victories.

That consistency changes how a clinching celebration feels. The Dodgers can appreciate another division championship without pretending it is the finish line. Mookie Betts described the title as the first step, while manager Dave Roberts emphasized that the club's larger goal remains ahead.

The standard is unusually high because the last two seasons ended with World Series titles. A third straight championship would move this roster from sustained contender to a team with a place in baseball history.

Ohtani is the biggest health question, but not the only one

Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Dodgers in September 2026

Shohei Ohtani is expected back before the postseason, according to Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman. That is the encouraging part. The uncertainty is how much time he will have to regain his rhythm before October.

Ohtani has been on the injured list while dealing with left-knee and right-biceps issues as well as neck soreness. Because of his two-way designation, he must remain on the IL for at least 15 days, making September 23 the earliest possible activation date. He is not expected to pitch again this season, so the immediate objective is getting his bat back into the lineup.

His pre-injury numbers remain imposing: 30 home runs, 80 RBIs and a .277 batting average in 130 games. On the mound, he had an 8-2 record and a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts before his pitching season ended. But his final stretch before the IL was difficult at the plate, which makes a handful of regular-season at-bats more valuable than they might normally look.

There are other moving pieces. Roki Sasaki has been working back from a finger blister. Blake Snell left a recent start after one inning because of groin tightness. Edwin Diaz has been sidelined with neck inflammation, while setup reliever Edgardo Henriquez has dealt with a lower-back strain. The Dodgers do not need every player at 100 percent immediately, but they need enough clarity to build an October pitching plan.

The race for a first-round bye still matters

Winning the division guarantees Los Angeles a place in the postseason and at least home-field advantage in a Wild Card Series. The more valuable prize is a top-two seed in the National League, which would allow the Dodgers to skip the Wild Card round entirely.

After clinching the West, Los Angeles remained two games behind Milwaukee for the league's top seed while holding a cushion over Atlanta for second. That gives Roberts a balancing act. Chasing Milwaukee could improve the playoff path, but pushing compromised players simply to improve seeding would undermine the larger goal.

A bye would be especially useful for a roster managing multiple injuries. Extra recovery days could help Ohtani accumulate controlled work, give the bullpen a reset and provide more time to determine whether pitchers such as Snell and Sasaki are ready for meaningful postseason innings. On the other hand, too much rest can disrupt routine, so the Dodgers still have to keep their healthy core sharp.

Tarik Skubal changes the calculation. Acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline, the two-time Cy Young winner has given Los Angeles another front-line starter for October. He has posted a 2.52 ERA through his first eight starts with the Dodgers, and his seven scoreless innings in the playoff-clinching win earlier in the week showed why he was such a significant addition.

The three-peat challenge is now about the version of the Dodgers that arrives

Shohei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2026 season

The Dodgers do not need another September statement to prove they can win. Their record, division title and recent championship history have already done that. The harder question is whether their best players will be available and effective when postseason series become short enough for one bad inning to decide everything.

Ohtani returning as a hitter would restore the lineup's most dangerous individual weapon even without his pitching. Skubal gives the rotation a genuine ace. Betts, Tucker, Muncy and the rest of the lineup provide enough depth that Los Angeles does not have to ask one player to carry every game.

But October compresses weaknesses. A thin bullpen becomes harder to hide. A starter who cannot work deep into games changes the workload for everyone behind him. A star returning from injury may have only a few plate appearances to rediscover timing before the games become elimination games.

That is why the final nine games matter even after the standings have delivered the Dodgers another banner. They are an opportunity to test roles, build innings, manage workloads and decide which version of the roster gives Roberts the most flexibility.

The NL West celebration was deserved. Thirteen division titles in 14 seasons and 14 straight playoff appearances are remarkable even for a franchise that has made winning look routine. But the 2026 Dodgers have built their season around a rarer target. The next week is about making sure the team that starts October is healthy enough to chase it.
