Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury during the build-up to their December 2026 fight

Anthony Joshua Brought Back Tyson Fury’s Old Trainer — Now Ben Davison Has to Solve the Fight

GOATIFY

Anthony Joshua has spent the last few years changing trainers in search of the version of himself that can still win the biggest heavyweight fights. For Tyson Fury, he is going back to somebody who knows both sides of the matchup.

Ben Davison will be Joshua's head trainer for the December 11 showdown with Fury at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. The choice is immediately fascinating because Davison has already occupied both corners of this rivalry. He helped rebuild Fury during the comeback that culminated in the 2018 draw with Deontay Wilder, then later worked with Joshua through the run that ended in the 2024 knockout loss to Daniel Dubois. Joshua moved on to Oleksandr Usyk's team for his next two fights, but promoter Eddie Hearn says Davison remained involved behind the scenes and will now lead the camp.

That makes this more than a story about insider knowledge. Davison knows Fury's habits, but Joshua's real problem is turning information into a game plan that survives contact. His dramatic win over Kristian Prenga in July showed both sides of the equation: he was dropped twice in the first round, then recovered to produce a brutal second-round finish. Against Fury, there will be far less room for that kind of recovery.

Davison knows Fury — but knowledge is only useful if Joshua can weaponize it

The obvious selling point is Davison's history with Fury. He guided Fury through five fights during the first phase of his comeback, including the remarkable 2018 draw with Wilder. He saw the details that television cannot fully capture: how Fury responds to certain drills, what he notices between rounds, how he manages distance when tired, and which tactical cues actually change his behavior.

That information matters because Fury is unusually difficult to prepare for from tape alone. He can box long behind the jab, smother opponents in the clinch, switch rhythm and stance, or suddenly decide to walk forward. A trainer who has built game plans around those options should be able to help Joshua identify which movements are real threats and which are invitations to overreact.

But insider knowledge is easy to exaggerate. Fury has not been frozen in 2018. His partnership with SugarHill Steward changed him into a more assertive puncher, and years of fights against Wilder, Oleksandr Usyk and other heavyweights have added layers Davison did not create. Fury also knows Davison's language and preferences. Any advantage works both ways.

The useful part for Joshua is therefore not a secret list of weaknesses. It is preparation speed. Davison should be able to get quickly to the decisions that matter: where Joshua can safely pressure, when Fury is trying to draw a counter, and how to avoid spending long stretches reacting to feints. If that familiarity makes Joshua hesitate less, it has value. If it convinces the camp that they possess a cheat code, it becomes dangerous.

The Prenga fight showed exactly what Joshua cannot afford against Fury

Anthony Joshua during his 2026 fight with Kristian Prenga

Joshua's comeback against Kristian Prenga is the most important recent evidence for this camp because it contained a warning and a reassurance in the space of five chaotic minutes. Prenga dropped Joshua twice in the opening round, first with a heavy uppercut and then again late in the round. Joshua looked close to losing the fight that was supposed to clear the final obstacle before Fury.

Then the old finisher appeared. Joshua steadied himself, came forward with purpose in the second, used the jab to put Prenga on the back foot and ended the fight with a violent right-hand sequence. The comeback showed that Joshua still has the power and competitive nerve to rescue a bad situation. It also showed why the Fury matchup cannot be approached as a simple puncher's chance.

Fury is far better at converting a hurt opponent into minutes of pressure. He can lean, jab, change the angle and force a wounded heavyweight to carry his weight. Joshua cannot assume he will get a clean reset after a mistake. Davison's first task should be to reduce the number of moments in which Joshua's feet stop underneath him while his guard becomes reactive.

That does not mean turning Joshua into a cautious points boxer. His best route to victory still involves making Fury respect his power. The challenge is sequencing the aggression. Joshua needs a stable jab, disciplined exits after combinations and enough patience not to chase every opening Fury appears to offer. Prenga proved Joshua can recover from chaos. Cardiff requires him to create less of it for himself.

Fury’s real advantage is making opponents solve several fights at once

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in the build-up to their 2026 fight

The hardest thing about preparing for Fury is that there is no single Fury fight to prepare for. The version who frustrated Wladimir Klitschko with movement is different from the version who walked down Wilder in their second meeting. Against Usyk, Fury had stretches where his size, uppercuts and body work looked capable of controlling the fight, but he also struggled when Usyk increased the pace and forced him to reset repeatedly.

Joshua cannot spend the opening rounds trying to discover which version has arrived. If Fury boxes long, Joshua needs to close distance without following him in straight lines. If Fury comes forward, Joshua needs enough structure to punish the entry rather than simply giving ground. If Fury leans in the clinch, Joshua has to decide when to fight for position and when to force a clean break rather than wasting energy wrestling a naturally bigger man.

This is where Davison's role can be most valuable. The camp can build branches into the game plan instead of one perfect script. Joshua should know what triggers a change: if Fury's lead hand is controlling the range, change the entry; if the clinch is draining him, attack the body earlier; if Fury is waiting to counter the right hand, make the jab and left hook do more work.

Joshua's power means he does not need to win every tactical phase. He needs to stay functional through all of them long enough to create the phase he wants. Fury has made a career out of making opponents impatient. The December fight may turn on whether Davison can keep Joshua from solving the wrong problem for too long.

Joshua does not need another reinvention — he needs one plan he trusts

The criticism of Joshua's trainer changes is not completely unfair. Since leaving longtime coach Rob McCracken, he has worked with Robert Garcia, Derrick James, Davison and Iegor Golub, while also spending time around Usyk's team. Every move can be justified individually, but heavyweight boxing does not reward a fighter who has to consciously search through four different systems under pressure.

That is why returning to Davison can work if the reunion is treated as consolidation rather than reinvention. Joshua already knows his voice. Davison already knows how Joshua reacts in a difficult corner. They have also experienced failure together: Davison was there for the Dubois defeat. That history should remove any temptation to pretend the weaknesses do not exist.

Hearn says Joshua will continue to have involvement from Usyk's team while Davison takes the head-trainer role. That can be useful, but only if the hierarchy is clear. More knowledge is not automatically better knowledge. On fight night Joshua needs one set of priorities, one voice between rounds and a game plan simple enough to execute while a 250-plus-pound opponent is feinting, leaning and punching back.

The ideal Joshua is not the reckless destroyer of his early career or the overly cautious boxer who sometimes emerged after the Andy Ruiz defeat. It is a version that combines both: disciplined enough to get into position, aggressive enough to capitalize when Fury gives him the opening. Davison's success will not be measured by whether he knows Fury. It will be measured by whether Joshua trusts the plan when the fight becomes uncomfortable.

Davison cannot fight Fury for Joshua, and his history with Fury does not remove the physical problems of the matchup. What he can do is shorten the learning curve. He knows how Fury thinks about distance and rhythm, he knows how Joshua responds to instruction, and he has already seen both men in vulnerable moments.

That makes the reunion a sensible gamble. The risk is that Joshua's camp becomes too fascinated by insider knowledge and not focused enough on the simple demands of the fight: establish the jab, protect the exits, stay balanced after throwing, and remain dangerous without becoming impatient.

Joshua has already predicted a knockout. Fury has promised one too. The tactical reality is likely to be less cinematic. Before either man can land the punch that defines their rivalry, Joshua and Davison have to solve the more difficult problem — keeping AJ clear enough, calm enough and close enough to make his power matter.

There is also a psychological benefit to choosing familiarity this late in the build. Joshua does not have to spend camp learning how a new coach communicates under stress. Davison can spend those weeks refining decisions rather than establishing trust from zero. Against a fighter as adaptable as Fury, that extra time should be spent rehearsing responses, not rebuilding Joshua's identity.
