Luka Dončić Is Back — and the Lakers Already Look Built Differently

GOATIFY

Luka Dončić waited nearly six months to play an organized basketball game again. His return lasted only 16 preseason minutes, but it was enough to change the tone around the Lakers. Dončić scored 21 points, added three assists and two steals, and helped Los Angeles build a 73-47 halftime lead in a 127-103 win over Sacramento.

The score is not the important part. The Lakers were missing Austin Reaves and Walker Kessler, and preseason rotations are designed to test combinations rather than maximize wins. What mattered was that Dončić looked physically comfortable after the hamstring strain that ended his 2025-26 season, while the reworked roster around him showed exactly why Los Angeles spent the summer adding length, defense and younger legs.

Dončić’s box score looked like a star shaking off rust and still controlling the game. He shot 5-of-12 from the field and 3-of-9 from three, but repeatedly bent Sacramento’s defense, got to the line and created the tempo Los Angeles wanted. Afterward, the most reassuring detail was his own assessment: he said he felt great physically and emphasized how much he had missed competitive basketball.

That matters more than a hot shooting night. Dončić had not played since April 2 after a Grade 2 hamstring strain. He also skipped Slovenia’s summer World Cup qualifying schedule, giving his body an unusually long recovery window. For a player who has often carried enormous regular-season and international workloads, the Lakers entered camp needing evidence that the layoff restored him rather than left him behind.

The first evidence was encouraging. He produced 21 points in 16 minutes without needing to stay on the floor after halftime, and Los Angeles could shut him down with the game already under control. The five turnovers were a reminder that timing still needs work, but that is exactly what October is for.

There was also a visible difference in the environment around him. Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle gave the starting group length and defensive activity, while Quentin Grimes supplied another two-way guard. The Lakers are not asking Dončić to become their best perimeter defender. They are trying to make the floor around him more forgiving so his offensive creation can remain the center of the team without every possession becoming a physical tax.

The Lakers’ new defense gave Dončić something he did not have to create

The most interesting part of the opener may have been what happened when the ball was not in Dončić’s hands. Los Angeles forced 26 turnovers and recorded 15 steals, turning defense into easier offense instead of asking its star to manufacture every advantage from a set half-court possession.

Williams and Thybulle set the tone with pressure and length. Grimes scored 16 points on efficient shooting, and rookie Cameron Carr added 19 points in 23 minutes while contributing two steals. Carr admitted to nerves before his preseason debut, but his athleticism and shooting gave the Lakers another example of the wing depth they spent the offseason trying to build.

That depth is especially important because Reaves and Kessler were unavailable. Los Angeles still has to learn how its preferred starting group fits together, and one exhibition cannot answer whether the new defense will hold up against elite regular-season offenses. But the roster logic was easy to see. Dončić creates advantages; longer, more athletic teammates pressure the ball and run; shooters punish rotations; Kessler eventually adds a vertical target and rim protector.

The next step is repetition. Dončić needs to rebuild game rhythm without overloading his body, Carr has to prove his debut can translate against stronger rotations, and Redick has to decide which of several wings deserves real minutes. Those are better questions than whether the Lakers have enough ways to support their franchise player.

Preseason optimism can disappear quickly, and the Lakers should not confuse one comfortable night with proof that the redesign is complete. The encouraging signal is simpler: Dončić returned healthy enough to look like himself, and the roster around him produced pressure, pace and depth without its full starting group.

If that structure survives when the games count, Los Angeles will not need Dončić to solve every possession by himself. His return showed the star is back. The more important development may be that the Lakers are beginning to look built for the version of him they need all season.
