Detroit Likes Kyrie Next to Cade — but the $39.5M Trade Math Is Brutal

GOATIFY

The Detroit Pistons won 60 games last season, claimed the Eastern Conference's top seed and still went home in the second round. That combination explains why a team with an established young core might be curious about a veteran who can manufacture a basket when playoff defenses stop giving away easy possessions. The latest name in that conversation is Kyrie Irving.

Reporting published on October 9 says several Detroit staffers appreciate the Dallas Mavericks guard's shot creation and his ability to share an offense with another high-usage star. That is a meaningful basketball observation, but it is not confirmation of negotiations, an offer or a decision to trade for him. Irving is 34, has not played a regular-season game since tearing his ACL in March 2025, and is owed roughly $39.5 million this season. The gap between liking the idea and completing a deal is substantial.

For Detroit, the question is not whether Irving can dribble, shoot or create in a tight game. His career already answers that. It is whether those skills justify the money, defensive compromises and outgoing players a deal would require while Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson are entering a new stage of their development.

Detroit's interest is a basketball fit, not a confirmed trade offer

The crucial detail in the latest reporting is the wording. Detroit personnel are described as being fond of Irving's game, particularly his shot creation and willingness to work next to players who dominate the ball. That is different from saying the Pistons have called Dallas with a formal proposal. There is no verified new offer, no reported agreement on compensation and no indication that Irving has requested to leave.

The interest makes sense against Detroit's recent results. A 60-22 regular season was an enormous achievement for a club that had spent years rebuilding. The Pistons then lost a seven-game second-round series to Cleveland. Winning 60 games establishes that the regular-season foundation works; losing a long playoff series invites a harder question about the kinds of possessions a team can still create when its first option is crowded and its transition opportunities disappear.

Irving has lived in those possessions. He hit one of the defining shots of the 2016 NBA Finals with Cleveland and reached the 2024 Finals as Luka Dončić's backcourt partner in Dallas. Those accomplishments do not guarantee that a 34-year-old returning from a serious knee injury can reproduce his peak, but they explain why evaluators still see value in his unusual balance, handle and late-clock scoring.

Detroit has already invested heavily in its existing core, including a reported five-year, $200 million deal for Duren. Its decision-makers must therefore distinguish between a name that would improve a hypothetical closing lineup and a transaction that improves the actual roster after the outgoing salary and assets are counted. The Pistons do not need a headline to validate their progress; they need a reliable answer to the playoff questions their 60-win season left open.

Dallas has its own priorities, which makes the report even less straightforward. The Mavericks are trying to build around Cooper Flagg, the young centerpiece of their next era. Irving's veteran scoring and leadership may be useful to that project rather than expendable. The mere existence of interest on one side does not create a willing seller on the other.

What another creator could change for Cade Cunningham

Cunningham averaged 23.9 points per game last season and has become the player opponents must plan around first. Duren was Detroit's next-leading scorer at 19.5. That is a strong inside-outside foundation, but a top seed can still become predictable if too many important half-court possessions depend on one perimeter player making the first advantage. Another guard who can beat a set defender without waiting for a screen would change the menu.

Irving's last healthy season gives a sense of the attraction. He averaged 24.7 points for Dallas in 2024-25 before his ACL injury. His scoring is not built on one move: he can finish with either hand, punish a switch in isolation, pull up from deep and attack a defense after the ball has already moved. The ability to function both with and without a high-usage partner is why his successful years beside LeBron James and Dončić matter to this discussion.

The best version of the pairing would not ask Cunningham to surrender the offense. Cade would remain the primary organizer for long stretches, with Irving handling selected second-side actions, late-clock possessions and staggered bench minutes. That could reduce the number of times Cunningham has to create a difficult shot against a fully loaded defense. It might also allow Detroit to keep pressure on opponents when its starting point guard rests.

But a skill-set match is not automatically a possession-level match. Irving has missed an entire season, and Detroit would need to discover his real burst, workload tolerance and defensive mobility after rehabilitation rather than assume the 2024-25 version will simply return. A preseason workout or a few strong practices would not settle that question. The relevant evidence will come from repeated game-speed possessions against NBA defenders.

There is also the issue of opportunity cost. Giving Irving more on-ball reps means somebody else gets fewer. Duren's interior touches, Cunningham's developmental responsibility and the cutting and transition roles of Detroit's wings all matter. An addition can raise the ceiling while quietly narrowing the habits that made a young roster successful. The coaching challenge would be to gain a closer without turning a balanced attack into alternating isolation plays.

The $39.5 million problem is bigger than one contract

Irving is due approximately $39.49 million for 2026-27. He also has a player option for 2027-28, which complicates any long-term valuation: an acquiring team could be paying a premium for a player who has not yet proved his post-injury level and who may control the following summer's decision. Dallas, meanwhile, has little reason to give away a potentially productive veteran simply because another club admires him.

Detroit's cap sheet is not an empty canvas. The Pistons have committed substantial money to Cunningham's supporting cast, including Duren's new deal, and the reported distance below the second apron is not the same thing as available cap room to absorb a nearly $40 million salary. Trade matching, the teams' cap positions and the identities of the outgoing contracts still have to work under NBA rules. A headline that says the Pistons can afford Irving is not a substitute for a legal trade structure.

That is where the fantasy gets difficult. If Detroit sends out productive rotation players to make the money work, the incoming star has to replace not only their points but also their defense, availability and lineup flexibility. If draft compensation is added, the club is spending future options as well. Those costs matter more for a young contender than they do for a veteran team with a short window and few remaining developmental decisions.

There is a second, subtler cost: the contract would compress Detroit's room to respond when the next problem appears. Injuries happen, playoff matchups change and players take unexpected leaps. The roster that wins in April is rarely a carbon copy of the roster that looked best in October. Retaining useful salary slots and movable pieces can be as valuable as landing one expensive scorer.

Any responsible evaluation would also require a medical and performance assessment of Irving's recovery. He tore his ACL in March 2025 and sat out all of 2025-26. That absence does not erase his skill, but it changes the risk profile of a deal. The Pistons would be paying for what he can deliver next, not the certainty of what he delivered before. Until the basketball and financial cases both hold up, the salary math is a reason to be patient rather than a reason to force a trade.

Detroit's defense and Dallas's timeline could decide everything

Detroit Pistons contesting a Houston Rockets shot in January 2026

The Pistons' improvement was not simply the result of one guard creating more points. Their identity depended on size, pressure, rebounding and wings who could cover ground. Ausar Thompson is particularly important to that formula. A smaller scoring guard can make the offense more resilient, but Detroit would have to protect its point-of-attack defense and avoid turning the very lineup combinations that powered 60 wins into something easier to attack.

That is why the question of whom Detroit sends out matters as much as whom it brings in. A trade that preserves Cunningham, Duren and its best defensive options is a different proposition from one that sacrifices two-way depth. Irving's experience could help a contender survive a stagnant fourth quarter; it cannot by itself replace several players' ability to switch, rotate, rebound and run. The Pistons would need a plan for both sides of the floor.

Dallas's incentives are just as important. The Mavericks finished 26-56 last season, but their rebuild now has a clear central figure in Flagg. Irving has said he is excited to play again after the long absence, and his shot-making could help the young forward learn how to handle NBA defenses without carrying every late-game possession. Dallas might eventually prefer assets and flexibility, but it could reasonably want to see the partnership on the court before deciding what it is worth.

That makes the calendar part of the story. An October rumor is not a February deadline decision. By the time the league approaches the trade deadline, Irving may have produced enough healthy games to change both his market value and Dallas's competitive outlook. Detroit may also have learned whether its own offensive creation issues are genuine playoff-level problems or merely questions being projected from one disappointing series.

The evidence worth watching is concrete: Irving's availability and efficiency, Cunningham's workload in close games, Detroit's defensive results in its most important lineups, and the Mavericks' willingness to entertain serious offers. None of those is settled by the fact that a few Detroit staffers admire a nine-time All-Star. A good rumor can identify a plausible basketball fit; only sustained performance and an actual trade framework can turn that fit into a transaction.

The reported admiration for Irving is credible as a basketball idea: Detroit could use another trusted creator beside Cunningham, and Irving has spent much of his career proving he can play alongside stars. But the leap from admiration to acquisition is enormous. The $39.5 million salary, a full missed season, the players required to match money and Dallas's interest in building around Flagg all push against a quick resolution.

For now, the sensible reading is that Detroit is exploring the kinds of players who might solve its next playoff problem, not that a Kyrie trade is imminent. The Pistons have already built something worth protecting. Any move for a veteran scorer should make that core more dangerous in May and June without undoing the defense, depth and flexibility that got it there in the first place.
